Everyone chiming, so why not :
  1. Competitive mixing workflows
This concerns area selection, Preview mode, Latch Prime, automation panel, Trim automation and (Protools-like) VCAs.
edit: I put the last one in to a feature request in the issue tracker.

  2. Volume Envelope Improvements
Scale, hands-on editing, multi-track selection. It's no fun at this time.

  3. Organizing Media, Presets and Session contents
Bins. Media Bay. Call it what you will, it's bread and butter for handling media and any kind of other data. The media explorer is an attempt at it, but an incomplete one.

That's off the top of my head. Since I often mix the material I edit, I'm not editing much of the material I edit in Reaper.

I'm very new to Reaper, so I apologize if these features already exist...

1) More advanced MIDI editing: I.E., ability to create velocity crescendos and diminuendos reletive to what's already on the track, transpose by scale and intervals, etc.

2) Ability to search and select MIDI based on various criteria: I.E., select all notes that are between C3 and G4 that fall on the 3rd beat of every measure and have a velocity greater than 90. Or ability to select all the top (or bottom) notes of all chords within a selection.

3) Dedicated shapes for automation and MIDI CC's. I.E., a basic square wave tool, sine wave, etc. that can all be snapped to the grid. I'de also love to see something like Studio One's "Automation Transform" tool.... which is simply amazing.

I have two...

1. Something akin to Abletons "Session View".. Or Sonar's attempt at that "Matrix View".

This is the only reason I still fire up Live now and again... It's just so easy to experiment and be creative. I haven't tried Sonar's take on it.

2. As mentioned in another post.. seamless integrated "freeze".

Looks like the same ones keep coming up, especially media bay which is good.

For me it's:
1) Media bay: the ability to see and control better all media in projects. Would especially like to be able to store complex media in project without having to stick them on the timeline. Also includes full ghosting functionality and control for clips.
2) (1) paves the way for really getting PiPs to work. PiP is a great concept full of potential, but until there's a media bay I fear it's going to remain unworkable.
3) Live session view as a project tab with PiPs. Again, once the media bay is in place, you can start pulling clips from the bay to projects (and back) without having to deal with timeline positioning, I'd then like to see an easy way of setting up a short loop and auditioning how different Pips/clips sound layered together.

To be honest, I'm not really expecting this in 4, but I'd be chuffed to see things start to push in this direction.

Default Small request....I think

First +1 for MFX support, also on options/preferences/plug-ins/VST under VST paths, either a drop down menu or option to view vertically would be very helpful as to avoid entering duplicate paths. just a thought.

Thanks

1. I'd like big manufacturers to say that Reaper is an officially supported DAW for their hardware. (UA, Access, etc...) that would be a giant leap imo.

2. bbb's wishes to come true...

One BIG thing I forgot. v4 will likely be a clean install for me, so...

I'd like it to be as best as possible out of the box. Meaning:

1) A good optimized default menu configuration

2) A good optimized default toolbars configuration

3) Best and most useful macros built-in (no need for forum hunting for some of the great stuff users have come up with)

4) Some good presets to start with (plugin, mixer, quantize, track templates, whatever...).

I will, of course, tweak as I go along, but a strong default configuration is important. If I dare, for example, install v3 fresh right now I will need to do a lot of work to make it more comfortable for me.

For all the above, the users can contribute most of it already, and there can be an open discussion about the default v4 configuration as well.

p.s. I know everyone is different and works different, but a common set of defaults can surely be agreed upon. And also, ensuring consistency of the way things work in all parts of the software.

the Logic Lobby proposes:

1) FREEZE that is easy to use
2) amalgamation parts that are easy to use
3) item/track/input realtime parameters that are easy to use

4) automation just like in the video http://www.towerstudio.net/reaper/logicautomation.mov
5) fully independent screensets with Catch & Link buttons to sync them.
6) easy sidechains and cross-ducking.

7)...and a GUI Architect, a separate application to construct GUIs for Reaper, to emulate any existing DAW or to fulfill our wildest DAW fantasies.

PS. 8) Grid Edit Mode (grid lines as movable objects)

I forgot, something that can be really helpful IMO.

Automation that it is linked to the items, more or less like in Ableton live, so when you copy a item everything remains equal with the copy.

Actually some "inspiration" in Ableton automation wouldn't be bad at all...

CD mastering tools, by which I mean "tools for assembling several mixed tracks into a complete album and burning a gold master for replication." Better PiP and ability to define CUE sheet markers, sort of thing.

1. Area Selection!!!

Make this like PT and Soundforge in that you could apply fx directly and destructively to the shaded file

2. Ableton style envelopes for clips.

Able to change volume/pitch etc for individual loops like you can craft in Ableton in the bottom view window. Take a drum loop and draw out the volume, pitch etc and create brand new sounds!

3. Improved Video editing

Just basics added to whats there, just so we can re-edit, fade, reverse video with ease, so its up to speed with things like Vegas but not bloated.. and it can sync and follow to video like PT does..

And.... oh yes? one more...... in line/track Pitch bend? lots of votes for this one so may get this before the v4 'second coming' )

at least two mixers and many more tabs for the floating toolbars
some manner of resizing the channels in the mixers like they do in the tcp... but really more like Qbase let's you do...
so you can make many channels fit in the mixer view and then just widen or narrow any of them to work the various controls better

Default Audio warp and tempo

From my usage and point-of-view,
I'd like Reaper 4 to step up on:

Audio-warp and tempo-changes

- Warping (stretching of audio) is supported, but I would like Reaper to make it look nicer, be easier to use and more intuitive.
- Audio-follow-project-tempo. To day Reaper has only limited functionality on this area.

Cheers!

Things that won't happen:

1. Full TDM and RTAS support with HD and Mix cards and Digi Interfaces. LOL
2. Ethernet Controller support like Control24 or ICON.

Things that I'd like to see happen

1. Area Editing
2. Brice's UI
3. PT style Elastic Audio
4. Trim Automation

One thing I'd really think should happen:

Product Stability:

Build some kind of basis for Reaper that won't change. So you can add features but the basics will always be there. One of the things I'm seeing happening is that the product feels like it will be a completely different product in a year. Not sure that that is such a great thing. It needs a bit of grounding. I think.

Reaper 4 might be a good place to start that foundation and keep building off of it.

What exactly do you mean? Things will be changed if they need changing, and if Reaper is a completely different product in a year it will be for the better. How would you pick what should change and what shouldn't?

I could be wrong, but I think Kenny is talking more about how commands will move between various menus after an update, or developing a more standard menu system that stays intact. The way it is now, it almost seems like you really have to relearn where things are after certain updates. Kind of like the big change from PT7 to PT8...., or the move from DP5 to DP6...., only it's happening on every update. Granted, Reaper is still a noob itself when compared to those 2 programs, but I agree that at some point the program needs to ground it's overal structure.

But there are good reasons for all those changes; they are improvements. To stop that sort of thing would be to stop improving for the sake of keeping things consistent. IMO, the changes should and will stop when no more improvements can be made.
