Just finished producing this track in REAPER.
Hey REAPERville!
Just finished producing this track tonight. It was recorded and mixed entirely in REAPER.
The gear I used is in my signature.
I performed all instruments and vocals.
I appreciate any feedback as this is my first track I've produced since I finished building my studio a couple weeks ago. I'm quite thrilled with the sound quality, arrangement, and mix, but I've also listened to this song like 3000 times, so I'm inherently biased.
A few notes:
This is kind of an ambient rock track. So the drums are buried deep in the back on purpose. I'm going to try and find a home for this song in a film.
*final mix*
http://soundcloud.com/deybwah/badplace
PS - Soundcloud's compression algo STINKS. The guitar sounds like it's farting at the beginning but trust me, the WAV master ain't got any gas.
Cheers!
Dey

Thanks Terrorball, much love man—you have some excellent tracks too! I dig Electronica, especially House, Dubstep, and D&B. Expecting to make some tracks in those genres now that my studio is complete and I just recently left my day job.

Sorry to say, but there are some timing issues with the acoustic guitar (e.g. 0:26-0:28). Otherwise a nice song! Very nice guitar chords and decent guitar sound.
cheers,

Hey M!
Thanks for catching that timing issue, much appreciated! And thanks for the kind words.
The guitar sounds are actually my Ovation legend mic'd up with a NT5. I tried to simplify the tracking on this tune by using less mics than usual. The drums as well were recorded in mono, first time for me actually. I usually do 2 overheads in OTRF. This time, 1 front of kit mic, 1 behind my right shoulder, and one over the tom facing snare.
Cheers!

Hey DeyBwah!!! Listening right now to your track on Soundcloud and i'm really digging it!! Wooooooooooooow Loooooooooooving the feel, the recording and the space in the mix. Very nice job man and the song is simply beautiful.
Great job mate!!
Keep up the good work mate!!
Cheers!!!
P.S If I may suggest something.. you know during your verses, as your drums are in Mono vibe, I like the idea that they are and sound RAW but I wouldn't mind maybe trying to just "N.Y Compress them and maybe add a little bit of Saturation Tape vibe on them like Soundtoys plugin Decapitator could give great results on" just to dirty them a bit without taking out the RAwness. And would add a very very subtle Room Verb in just to give that depth of far away. Just me and it's a suggestion.
Other than that mate, Braaaaaaaaavo!! Me liking digging the simplicity of the production and mix and song. Thumbs up!!! Would definitively hear it in a Movie and don't hesiate making the Reverb in your Chorus Wider, bigger, Let it surround us and make us melt in. Hahahha!
Peace!!

Agree -- nice song in every aspect.
I enjoy finding out what kind of music goes with the face I see in an avatar.

Nice job on both the song and the mix.
I can offer a minor critique that may be taken more as a stylistic opinion than anything else, depending on what suits you... The double tracked acoustics, IMO are panned too hard. I think they should bleed to the other side somehow, either by narrowing the placement or by opposite panning reverb or delay. Rather than a large, rich stereo field being presented by the double tracks, I am getting distracted by the stark separation of both sides at different times.
It's a nice song. Enjoyed the listen.

I'm gonna second the "WOW!" I do agree about the guitar separation. But still a very nice effort all 'round. I'm gonna listen that this more than once just for the enjoyment!
Kyle
PS - Is there a way on Soundcloud to take this to my monitors in my recording room?

Nice song. I really like this. Sounds much better than what I've done so far. Glad to hear you making such great sounding mixes post PT. If I remember right you left PT about the same time I did and came over to REAPER.

Solar!
Thanks so much for the kind words man and great suggestions on the mix. I went ahead and added some more room verb to the drums. Funny you mention the NY compression on the drums... something was sounding a bit weak in that area, and although I did want the drums to be in the back.. the snare was much louder than the drums. Turns out I had rolled off too much of the low frequencies. Fixed that up right quick, now the kick actually exists!
Also bumped up the verbs in the chorus a couple dbs.

Thanks kindafishy!
I went in and made some edits to clean up the rhythm on many elements including the acoustic guitars. It's funny how no matter how many times you listen to something, you can still miss things! But as soon as you know what to look for, it's so obvious.
Anyway, I added some verb as well. Should be a bit less distracting. I'm working on rendering the changes. Will post shortly.
Cheers!

Thanks cedrorum!
I know right? Chalk up another win for REAPER.
I recently purchased PT9(about a month ago) and fired it up... oh dear lord. I forgot how long it takes to even start the app.
Needless to say, haven't barely touched PT since I left her early last year.

I'm bouncing the final 44.1 16bit wav as we speak... just a heads up, it's actually quite a difference with the low end in tact on the drums + edits on timing + more juicy verbs!
I also tried taking the Nebula plug off this round. (for "struder tape" emulation) It sounds crisper.. sounds a bit clearer overall.
I'll post it as soon as it's up on SoundCloud.

Man... soundcloud really butchers audio quality.
Adding the verbs to the guitars made the farting sound more apparent lol!

Me too, Low end need some work... and as I suggest, don't hesitate, "sqush" the shit out of those drums to give them some attitude and still by keeping the essence of your first idea (moni-ish, raw, natural) but just to give them a little taste, you know the kind that you go like "wooooooooow, the drums are dropping but still not taking too much place, just as you envisioned them) and I would give a little bit of meat on your bass sound to sit well with the drums.
Just suggesting...
Gread job so far man!! Simply loving it!!

Here it is!
Drums are definitely more prominent, but work well with the bass, stay separate from guitars, and Vox is cutting through. I'm burning a copy to listen in the car, but it's sounding great on both my Focals and Yamaha monitors. The bass is thick like syrup with a sub woofer, but not overwhelming.
I uploaded two different versions.
One without any mastering plugs on the master track, just using my Obsidian buss compression to bring the levels up.
The other with a brickwall limiter on the master track.

PS - Let me know if the drums are "squished" enough.

Oh and it turns out, the farting acoustic is a known issue with SoundCloud.

Still decent for publicity, but I'm looking into a more robust service that also allows digital distribution. Will probably start a separate thread for that though.

Hey mate!!
Now we're talking. Woooooooooooooow... loooooooooving how the drums sound almost like really "primal" and they are round although mono-ish. Now me like, me love a lot. As we say, it's tasty, you know when you simply the sound of how a sound or instrument was processed etc... exactly, drums sound perfect.
Little suggestion to call it a rap, because i've listened both versions with Brickwall and no brickwall and of course this is left for taste matter, I would bring up the dB of the overall bass line a little bit up, let's say 1.5 dB more.. just so the bass take it's place and feel that the bass is the support that keeping the music all standing still.
Just a tasteful suggestion regarding the bass. Just me.
Other then that buddy... Excellent job man!!! Everything now just flows man. Congrats!!!!
Now Send the song to Abbey Road and get it mastered hahahahahahah just for the heck of it!!! hahaaahahha I know one of the Top engineers there simply amazing!!! hahahahaha

Ah thanks Wolfman!
Ya the HS80s are amazing for the price! Gotta love how Yamaha makes EVERYTHING, and with consistent good quality.
I think the kick is a little out of control.. and the bass needs to fill in the balance the bottom/top relationship a little bit.
I listened to the latest mix in my car last night.. was hoping it would be IT.. but I had to call it a night, ears were so fried from mixing this track non-stop for the last 3 days.

Haha MY
I can feel your positive vibes man, really appreciate your feedback! It's pretty dead on actually, but what do I expect from the one and only MY!
I'm listening right now with fresh ears to either...
a)turn down the kick a notch.. see if that allows the bass to be more present. Everything sounds fine until I take the mix into my car, where the kick is just dominating the overall sound(maybe being in an enclosed space?). It's making the bass feel smaller I think. Also is a little bit distracting from the Vox. I'm thinking something super minute, like 1 - 1.5db down on the kick.
b)or turn down the kick AND boost the bass a db or two.
Going to start with the kick, if that doesn't do the trick. Gotta lift the bass a bit.
Cheers mate!
*Just a note* I have a very clean system in my car with a very subtle high-end JL sub. Dynamat on the interior to reduce any sympathetic vibrations. In other words, it's a great checkpoint for mixes. The main speakers aren't amped, so if they give out at max volume, I know I'm mixing too bass heavy, or crushing the mix too hard.

No, my DAW computer is not connected to the internet. I usually transfer something by flash drive if I want to listen in my treated room through my monitors.

That's actually something I'm going to do soon probably. Want to keep my DAW isolated from the internet. It's just so damn convenient, plus I can enjoy my good sound for things like Netflix.
A sacrifice for priorities no doubt.
What I'm planning to do is just output sound from my laptop(which will have internet) to my patchbay. Not the best solution, but I will have the RME Babyface and those converters are fantastic.

Hey DeyBwah!!
Thanx You're more then welcome and my positive vibe is simply because the song is great and you did a great job buddy!!!. Mean it
Sounds good to me, go make or adjust those changes, and anyhow they are very minor changes to be honest with you and at the end as I mentioned before, really matter of taste.
Looking forward to hear the FINAL FINAL version buddy!
Amazing work again
Cheers!!!

I got it working somehow.. that's a bit iffy lol.
Anyway, newest mix is up. I had a bunch of great ideas during down town, namely, more automation to push the track forward into the next transitions and creating larger contrast between parts.
I'm about to give it a listen in the car, thought I'd put it up and get some more feedback too!

Hey buddy!
Loooooooooooving it now. Did you bring down a bit the Kick in dB or brought the Bass line up?
Sounds great mate, honestly, I think you nailed it now and whatever comes after it's really matter of ear taste. Like me like when the bass is more if your face, sitting supporting the overall space that the music is floating but thats my style haahahahaha
Kudos DeyBwah... you got here a very beautiful song that could feature of course in a Movie Soundtrack.
Thanx for sharing , if anything, don't hesitate!!!
Cheers!!
