Default 6-8 channel usb interface cheap?

Hello!

I'm looking for a used/cheap interface just for tracking drums (so latency not really a massive issue). I have other kit for other jobs; this is JUST for drums.

I have a budget of near zerro.

I need at least 5 pre-amps.

So far, the only thing I see in any numbers is the old Tascam 1641, but I'm scared about Windows 10 compatibility. Anybody know about that?

Any other suggestions would be great.

Another option would be to add a preamp with spdif to the Lexicon 4 channel USB interface I already have, but that seems fiddly (clock wise) and also not really any cheaper.

Any ideas would be ACE!

LOVE YOU!

Not easy to find so many inputs in a cheap package..

But perhaps you could take a look at the Behringer stuff:
4 XLR inputs: https://www.thomann.de/gb/midas_mr_12.htm
8 XLR Inputs: https://www.thomann.de/gb/midas_mr_18.htm

There's another with 6,
but I'm not sure if it's got USB connection or it's only WiFi/Ethernet:

I think you may be hoping for a little too much if your budget is the £90 the 1641 goes for....it's lack of official compatibility is the likely reason it's that cheap. (Drivers state pre creators edition)
Maybe it still works with later updates but unless you get that confirmed I wouldn't risk it.

The newer US-1800 would be a better option and recently they went for anything between £100 and £160 on Ebay...maybe you'll get lucky with a current listing.

M-Audio M-Track Eight is another possible...or the Behringer UMC1820.

surely a UMC1820 would be more in line with the poster's (financial) requirements?

Apart from that, just scour gumtree & ebay - there are loads of bargains to be had for very little cash (in my experience)

I use a UMC1820 for my acoustic drums and love it. Super low latency and it works in Linux too.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M-Audio-F...e&LH_Auction=1

Usb 2 compat - not 1.

Auction 6days to go but buy it now for £100

Or maybe https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PreSonus-...W&LH_Auction=1

Currently bids at £26 and one day to go but you will need to check if the interfacing is suitable for you (FireWire) but it does have s/pdif and clock in/out too.

Maybe others can comment?

Thanks for adding that. A bit of a show stopper!!

Can you clarify that as the specs I have seen include Windows?

Plus one for the Behrigner stuff. the more recent ones with Midas pres actually sound quite decent.

I have a 1820 for my live shows and streams, and wouldn't be ashamed for one second to use it for my "profesionnal work" if my Audient went down the drain. For the price difference, the Audient only sounds marginally better.

IMHO, the 1820 is the way to go.. cheap, low latency, decent drivers ... And very acceptable sound. Best pack for the punch at the moment.

Don't get a 1641 if you use newer than El Capitan Mac or Windows 10, I owned one and it broke compat.

I'm presently using a Tascam US-600 on the latest Win 10. Works fine.

I have actually had decent luck finding used stuff cheap on Facebook Marketplace - especially with Covid, some people are dumping stuff - won't hurt to take a look every once in a while.

I suggest looking on reverb for a used Focusrite Scarlett 18i20.

Thinking over the way that Zargon described the recording situation?

I almost wonder if a used Zoom R24 might be a possibility.

You'd have eight microphone inputs. It works as a standalone and as an interface. User reviews that I've seen tend to be positive.
