Default >> v4: Mouse Modifiers

In Preferences/Editing Behavior/Mouse Modifiers , you can customize the mouse behavior with different modifier keys, in different contexts.

For example, the default behavior of shift+control+drag on a media item is to copy the item while ignoring snap-to-grid. You can change this to any of 20+ other behaviors, including: moving the selected area of the item, adjusting pitch, moving the item contents, setting the time selection, doing nothing, and so on.

There are separate customizable contexts for dragging in the top vs. bottom half of a media item. By default, dragging in the bottom half is mapped to “pass through to media item context”, meaning that the behavior is identical when dragging in either the top or bottom half.

Any action (including custom actions) can be assigned to any double-click mouse modifier, in any context. If you want to, you can assign 32 different actions to be triggered when double-clicking the top or bottom of a media item, while holding different modifier keys.

Some of the behaviors are complex. For example, the default behavior when dragging a media item is to move the selected area of selected items if the drag begins within the time selection, and move all selected items if the drag begins outside the time selection. If you want to always move all selected items regardless of where the drag occurs (which is the old default behavior), use “Move item ignoring time selection.”

As another example, the default behavior when dragging the edge of a media item is to move the edge of all selected items that occur at the same timeline position. If you want to move the edges of all selected items regardless of timeline position, use “Move item edge ignoring edge time for selection.”

You can now copy blocks of automation with the mouse, using control+shift+alt+drag by default, but this can be mapped to any other key combination using Preferences/Editing Behavior/Mouse Modifiers.

There are also actions to change the default mouse action for any context. So, for example, you could switch the default media item drag behavior between “move item” and “move selected area of item” using a custom toolbar button.

Confirmed, not working on OSX... fixing, thanks!

[edit] actually this is a general problem with some popup menu changes on OSX. Fixing!

Awesome, excited to dig in!

Upon first glance it seems that there is no way to move the marquee from the right click button, does this mean there is no way to do "marquee+time selection" in the bottom or top half of an item for example?

Sadly, it appears that a compiler bug of all things is preventing mouse modifiers from being edited on OSX. This will probably take a few hours to sort out, sorry for the trouble.

There is not yet any way to reassign right-click, or assign marquee to left-click. You can change the behavior of the marquee selection, but not which mouse button triggers it.

No I'm actually working on Windows right now

But still, there's no way to set "Ruler context" left click to be "Marquee". It seems the "Marquee" functionality is permanently trapped to right click, is this correct?

hey, no worries at all! so stoked, this is freakin sick!!!

edit: if the right click\marquee thing does make it on your radar, that'd be great, atm though, there's so much to take in, i just reassigned my pen, and all is good

This is a great addition and my favorite new feature.

How about modifiers set to toolbar buttons so we can change modifier depending on what tool we have selected....

This would allow very powerful custom tools to be built and used with very few complicated or hard to remember modifiers.

Glad to see that it's "not yet" as opposed to "won't be". Left-click marquee is my number one feature request. Very pleased to see it's on the list of coming features!

This can be done now. There are actions to reassign the default mouse action, so you could assign those actions to toolbar buttons. IE. a toolbar button for "slip edit", "adjust pitch", and so on.

On media item Ctrl+Alt is: Render item to new file. How does this work?

Thanks, Wyatt

Drag anywhere from the item and release, it will render a
new item there. This works also by dragging to explorer/finder.

It's the first thing I tried to do, and it's not possible yet...another request here for left-click time selection + marquee.

Very powerful for editing.

this sounds totally awesome, but i have one question/possibly request. will the default behaviour stick to how it works for me now? i loooove the ability to change stuff and customize it, and this will be a great tool for that, but it would be kind of a downer if for the stuff i don't want to change, i'd have to go and modify things.

this is going to be cool though.

We will add this as a factory mouse modifier for double-click (all of "show item properties", "show source properties", and "open MIDI editor or show item properties").

Until we add it as a factory modifier, you can always add it as a custom modifier. Open preferences/mouse/mouse modifiers, select "media item double-click", and for "default actions" choose "Action list..." and select "item properties: show media item properties."

This will be sweet. I still, to this day, double click items every so often, expecting item properties to come up.

a few of the menus will pop up and stay (maybe 1 in 20) - but none of the "Track" ones will stay open for example....

This is meant to trigger the action when double-clicking empty track space (not over an item). Bug confirmed, fixing, thanks.

Ah, so no double-clicking on the track-header is intended/planned?

That would be so great and useful for e.g.

- quickly (toggling) zooming a track (or a selection of tracks)...

- quickly record-arming it

- quickly soloing it

etc.

At the bottom of preferences/editing behavior/mouse, "control+left-click emulates right-click (control key will be unavailable for mouse modifiers)".
