Default Record Monitoring

What does the "Record Monitoring" button in the "TCP" provide which couldn't be accomplished with the "Mute", "Solo" or "Record Arm" buttons? As I'm a hobbyist I don't record enough to become proficient with Reaper but I'm easily overwhelmed when I do sit down to record, and that button has tripped me up on many occasions (I have to resize my track and mixer panels to even see the button). Is there a way to set the default for it to "Record Monitoring: On"?

Default

In combination with record arming, it offers monitoring of the signal coming into Reaper or of the midi input from a keyboard.

In preferences/project/track send defaults you can tick record arm and in record config select monitor input and these will automatically be applied to new tracks.

Be aware if you use direct monitoring then you would not want record monitor enabled
