Default What are the limits for reaper and video processing?

I don't expect to be able to add fonts or nice transitions or anything, but I would like to be able to have audio linked to video, so that if I cut the video, the audio goes along with it. I'd also like to be able to edit this audio, or even make a full musical production, and have that pegged to video, so that again, I could just cut and paste, and the audio follows the video, perfectly pegged in time. Can I do all of that in reaper?

What's the best way to go about doing that, if so?

You can do all that and more

"I don't expect to be able to add fonts"
text formatting is limited but you have access to any font on your system, you just need to type the name in the script.

"nice transitions"

basic fades are supported. be creative.

"I would like to be able to have audio linked to video, so that if I cut the video, the audio goes along with it"

sync the audio and video items then group.

lots of examples and information on my site btw

For straight editing Reaper is slick and fast, especially beat based, for anything a bit more esoteric I would suggest using a real editor, free ones are better than Reaper (Resolve for instance)

system requirements for resolve are pretty steep. I use it occasionally but has never run well on my mac.

True enough about Resolve but other options are Hitfilm Express or Lightworks. Both are good but have their own ways of working.
Alternatively even an older version of Vegas Movie Studio will feel somewhat REAPER-like and is capable of most effects etc.

Sweet. Simple fades are fine. In fact, I'll probably end up just straight switching scenes without any fade.

Another thing I'm wondering about is rendering what formats I can render in and things like that. I actually have a good video editor, which I'll probably use for adding some text and potentially a few other things, but I'm wondering about how reaper will render everything.

I want to do audio treatment and the video editor is not good at that, so, chopping up video segments and then lining up audio segments to that afterwards would be a real pain. If I can just sort of get the "scenes" or cuts with audio synced, all cued up, and then export to a video editor for the more fancy stuff, that would be as good as I could ever hope for.

I've never used video though. Do video options just appear in the render dialog I guess? Are there any limitations here with reaper? I'm also not really sure where all the video actions are, like fades and stuff like that. idk if I'll use any, but anyway.

I looked on your reaper blog, epicsounds, but didn't see any video.. video tutorials. I didn't really see much of an index to help find it though either.

I searched for your video on youtube though, and found it.

That's the link if anyone else is interested.

Not sure how to decide decoder priority for my particular setup.

Here's the category with all related videos, I think there are 10 in all but many of the "What's new" series have little things demonstrated.

Honestly, fades and transitions are near enough never used in a real editing facility, avoid them and make straight cuts and it will teach you when and where to cut too

Ya, I was planning on straight cuts most of the time. Maybe a fade-in or fade out possibly, but especially transitions, and even fades are pretty cheesy most of the time.

I would like to have the audio of my camcorder muted, but still be able to edit, view and cut the video portion of it, and use the audio from another track. How could I do that?

EDIT: I see that I could go into the properties and turn the volume all the way down, but that removes all my peaks, which I would like to keep as a useful visual reference.

EDIT2: Nevermind lol. Just remove the send to parent track for it. Should have thought of that.

right-click video item, source properties
[✓] ignore audio

edit -

another option is to alt-click the track routing button to disable master send.

Ah, the second properties window. There's actually good information about my audio file in there.

I have 29.97 fps, but I'm not 100% positive on whether or not is drop frame. I have a feeling I won't necessarily notice much of a difference except for at some point where things might not line up like I expected, but I can't figure out whether the source is drop frame or not. I tried looking in the manual for my camera, and none of the properties information panes like this one specify which it is.
