Default Way to get more keyboard keys ?

Is there a keyboard with more keys or a way to add them such that Reaper can use them for actions including Shift/Ctl/Alt modifiers ? I don't know if it exists but thought I'd ask. I can only remember so many Shift+Alt+J type combinations and would much prefer just more keys.

I use a Logitech G510s which has 18 programable keys, which can be set to various key combinations. I have some of my ctrl + shift and alt type commands and I think it works really well.

hmmm... just had a look on the Logitech website to see if there is something similar to the G510s

looks like programable keys are no longer in vogue

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking for about 15 or more keys and of course wireless. Am I an animal ? :-)

This looks interesting. What do they show up as in Reaper hotkeys (like G5 for example)?

So you can do ctrl+G16 for example ? or alt+shift+g12 ?

What about two keyboards ?

The CSI reaper extension can cope with as many "buttons" as you like to issue commands onto Reaper. But CSI needs to be fed by Midi or OSC.

So we would need some diver that translates computer keyboard signals to Midi (maybe "Bome Translator" can do something like this ?) or an extension to CSI.

I tried an additional numpad but they show up the same as the keyboard numpad. I think a 2nd keyboard would just send the same keys unless there is some voodoo going on.

A midi device would probably be perfect for this purpose. I have a bunch of faders, encoders and switches on my midi keyboard that I sometimes map to Reaper functions, particularly the transport controls or plugin params. I also have a portable DJ midi controller that I think would be a great Reaper control surface with its touch sensitive jogwheels, but have not yet experimented with that idea. These kind of devices can be had for reasonable investment, especially used.

That is perfectly right.

That is why a dedicated OS-System driver is needed, that acts differently on signals from the secondary keyboard then from the primary.

Maybe in the "Control Surfaces" Forum somebody already did some research on that.

In linux you can have many qwerty keyboards and mice in parallel. In other systems not sure if same easily possible. Thus in linux you could have 5 qwerty's in front of you like a pilot cockpit, all keys doing different things in Reaper, for example.

I remember a post here where someone used a cheep $10 game controller to make a foot pedal with buttons. If REAPER sees a game controller as something you can assign button presses to, that might be a way to achieve your goal without spending a ton of money.

For "single-key" keyboard macros, the "HidMacros" utility can be used quite well.
Its webpage is here http://hidmacros.eu
and it's also on Github here https://github.com/me2d13/hidmacros

Any keyboard connected is recognized as Keyb1, Keyb2 etc. You can assign Ctrl+A to "A" button on Keyb1, while you assign Alt+Shif+O to "A" button on Keyb 2 and so on. You can even assign whole words or sentences to simplify a typing of repetitive phrases, like when you name a track etc (just assign word "DRUMS" or "BASS" to the D and B keys on the keyboard
The application is quite easy to set and operate.

Tip: I would left main keyboard unaltered, then all reaper shorcuts set to use modifiers which would be set as macros on other kezboard(s) / one for words, one for functions, one for toolbar icon triggering etc.

EDIT: There is new project called "LuaMacros" (https://github.com/me2d13/luamacros), which is more programmable on one hand (I could imagine what scriptre from this forum could come with) but some functionality was removed on another hand. So I think both applications are useful.

Those look very cool if you have room for 2 keyboards. Ideally I'll find one of those gaming keyboards cheap with 15 or more extra keys.

You can use those wireless radio/bluetooth miniKeyboards for smartTVs etc, that have all the keys of normal keyboard, but are very small, wireless, often with backlit.
I bought few of them at AliExpress for USD 5,- each

As low as 69.00 at a store near you - price depends on button count but I get it.

Not sure what you mean

Assume I have an action set to use the shift + control + m key combination, I go into the Logitech keyboard setup software and I set a particular G key to match that combination.

Works well for me because I unset almost all of keyboard shortcuts that use a single key, because I got fed up with accidentally hitting them and messing something up. But to save me having to remember my various combinations I hit a single G key instead.

trouble is, getting one second hand would be the only way to get hold of one, and I would hate to have to use someone else's grubby keyboard

Hmmm, can the G keys have modifiers too ? Like can you assign G1 to an action and Alt+G1 to another action ?

Would you have a link to that post, Glennbo? I'm looking for a customish controller for live use, and I don't want to have to be lugging a "real" MIDI keyboard around if I'm not playing keys.

Oh, and then there's my mouse...

I use a Logitech G500s gaming mouse, which also has programmable buttons.

I only use three for REAPER, but I use them a lot. One for toggling between TCP and MCP, one for starting and stopping the transport, and one for save project.

I find that I my hand is at my mouse for a lot of the time once I start mixing and with a combination of those buttons on the mouse and selecting stuff with the left and right click I can sometimes work with one hand

Took a minute to find it, but here is the original thread complete with pictures how he built a foot controller out of a cheep game controller.

2nd post I've seen today recommending very expensive keyboards.

if you just want "buttons", why not check out the Xtouch Mini? It has 2 layers of 16 buttons (total of 32), plus 2 layers of 8 rotary encoders, and even a fader. One of these is cheaper than any of the recommended keyboards ($80), gives you more buttons, room to label buttons, and forget your keyboard combos!

That's a nice device. I wish it was wireless. I sit with the keyboard in my lap with my legs up (living the dream) so it would be super to have it all on the keyboard. I do have a stool to my left I could put this Xtouch Mini on. Thanks for the ideas.
