Wow, I had to go back about 10 years to find the last time I've done those conversions.
problems loading a Roland VS file project
If something has changed since then, I don't know. What tools/methods have you tried so far?

It has been a long time since I messed with this but I will try to help if I can.
What is it you're trying to do - import to reaper from a 2480 CD backup into reaper?
Do you have a working 2480? Do you have a working 2460 CD burner?
One thing for sure I remember - the reaper.dll import only works in 32 bit reaper... and I have not tried it many versions. There was some versions long ago where it quit working - I requested Justin make it work again and he did... but again that was many versions ago.
All of my roland backup discs are in a box somewhere in the garage... i guess I could try to find a few and see if it works with current version 6.

I had to do this a few years ago. It was a major pain. As I vaguely remember, the main difficulty was that the converter apps referenced in the previous post were very old, even then, and had compatibility issues with the version of Windows I was using then (7? Maybe even XP?) It was hard to find the OCX libraries they required, but I eventually did.
As I vaguely remember, the process was:
--burn the VS projects to CD in Roland's backup format
--rip the backups to my PC using the conversion programs to disassemble them into their component parts
--use a portable install of Reaper 3.x, which was the only version that worked with the conversion tools
--open the project in Reaper 3.x and render the tracks to wav stems
--reassemble the stems in my more current version of Reaper for editing/mixing
No problems with the audio quality--in fact they sounded great, and I think they came in as 24/48 or maybe even 24/96. I went through my archives and found every Roland VS project I'd ever done, no matter how trivial, so that I could convert them while the process was still fresh in my mind. I knew I would never want to do this again.
If you can't get the conversion apps working, an alternate method might be to render the projects on the VS as "songs," each containing only two of your tracks, hard-panned L/R, and burn those to standard redbook audio CD from the VS. You could then rip those to wav files on your PC using EAC or any cd ripper tool. An 8-track VS project would be 4 "songs" that could then be broken into individual tracks in Reaper. I've never tried that, so hopefully you wouldn't run into sync issues with the audio.

vs 2480 data conversion
I'm beginning to see just how monumentally difficult this will be.I may just toss all my 2480 data discs.

LOL don't be silly it is really easy once you get the hang of it...
you answered my first question - you want to import into reaper from backup CDs...
Do you have the software utilities? Namely my CD ripper (CD2ROLAND.exe) and randygos reaper.dll? I can get you copies if you don't.
And BTW the ripper works fine in WIN7 and WIN10 - I have used it in both
You do need the 32 bit version of reaper... but that is easy - and you can just do a portable install..

Ok - I went to the garage and found some backup CDS
It took me less than 10 minutes to find my utilities, rip 4 songs off a CD, import into reaper...
And it works totally fine to import into reaper6 32 bit version...
of course once you have the song loaded into reaper you can just render all tracks to wav.. or open the project in reaper 64 and use it there from then on...

LOL don't know why it sent it twice...
The tools will not work with songs recorded on the VS2480 in LIV modes (the lowest resolution mode) but will work for all others. Also will work for 1680, 1880, 880, and 840 backups...

Bear, it definitely sounds like you had an easier time with it than I did--congrats! It was 3-4 years ago when I did it, and I still feel like I'm permanently affected.
The horror... The horror...
I don't know if I shall ever be able to trust again.

cd2roland.exe
Dear Bear,
this cd2roland.exe sounds exactly like what I hoped so very much to find: a utility that allows to transfer my VS1680 backups to Reaper (also using the reaper plugin created by randygos).
Only thing is: the versions of cd2roland.exe I could find on the web, all are flagged by anti-virus tools as containing trojan and other virus patterns.
I am aware that anti-virus tools look for bit patterns, 'finger prints', and if your honestly made application happens to contain such pattern, it unfairly gets flagged and it is a pain to get it white-listed again.
So I want to kindly and humbly ask: would you be prepared to send me a copy of this absolutely fantastic utility you created, so I know it is a version that has not been tampered with?
Sincere thanks, Hans

Hey there, bear. I used the VS Wave Export.exe app recently to rip the .wav files from some backup discs. That's yours, isn't it? What does the CD2Roland.exe app do? Don't ever recall using that one or the reaper.dll import. Or is that what you call the whole thing? I only used the VS Wave Export.exe app, and it did just what I needed (which sounds like what the OP is needing, unless he wants bpm and other mixer type stuff that may be there, I guess) and it worked like a charm. Cheers to all.

The original work on cracking the Roland RDAC encryption was done by mostely by two guys - screen names Randygo and Danielo. With that the basic roland data files could be turned into standard wav files. Randygo wrote a utility dll to add to Reaper which allowed import of roland files into Reaper projects
I wrote the CD2Roland utility that allows ripping Roland backups from the proprietary format they used to write to CD backups
Then Danielo wrote the VsWaveExport program which was a stand alone convertor from roland files to standard wav - he included my cd2roland program file as a option that could be run from inside it.
Because the roland format to write to CD is totally non-standard it takes accessing the CD drive in a PC at a very low level - this freaks out virus detection programs. If anyone needs a known clean version of these utilities post over on the VSplanet or pm me there with email address and I will send them to you.
All of this was done about 12 years ago - it should be noted the Reaper dll only works with 32 bit reaper - or it least it used to, I haven't tried it in a long time, many versions ago.
You can always use the VsWaveExport to make standard time aligned wavs though, which can then be imported into reaper.

Greetings, bear. Thanks for clearing that up. Other folks on the VS forum have referred to the VS export app thingy as "bear's" ripper program, so that's what stuck in my head. Good to see you around, hope you're doing well. Hey, mikeymartin, have you had any luck in doing what you're lookin' to do?

Hi Bear,
I'm trying to get a copy of the VsWaveExport utility, and having the same antivirus issues with the only copy I can find online (from thegoodlibrary.com). I understand it's most likely a false alarm, but saw that you offered to directly send a known clean version. I tried to register for the VSplanet board, but that doesn't seem to be working, and they have not responded to my email about registration issues. So, wondering if you could send me a copy somehow?
Thanks

I use the Roland vs2480 as my interface to Reaper. I can transfer tracks to Reaper from the Roland to Reaper no problem.

That website is Danielos - so what is there is probably fine. Might not be the latest though.
Go to VSPLANET and look up my details - you can find my email there. send me an email and I will send my archive link.
Even my copy may very well trip anti virus though...these antivirus programs get real nervous when they see someone mucking around deep into windows that they do not understand.
