Default mic options for hi-hat and or ride?

I have 3 pencil condensers, 2 for the over heads, and that leaves one for the ride or hi-hat. All my 57s are used on the tom/snare. So, that leaves me with a couple large diaphragm and a ribbon. which one should I use? I use both my hi-hat and ride on every song, so I don't want to not mic either one. and I don't want to have to raise my levels of OH in the mix, just to get the ride/hi-hat to come through.

Experimentation could be the key but I would probably try the pencil condensor on the hats pointed straight down at the edge.
You could possibly move one of the OH mics to better pick up the ride or add the large diaphram mic.

I'm sure there is more than one way to skin that cat ;-)

I'd position the OH's for toms and cymbals, and use the pencil for the hat.

Keep in mind that many of the modern ribbons can handle some high sound levels; if yours qualifies, you can use that on your ride.

What are you using on the kick?

Well, I did a little experimentation last night mic'ing everything up and the results we great! I liked the sound of the ribbon on the hats vs. the ride, so I went with that config.

57 on snare top, large condenser on bottom
d112 on the inside kick, large condenser on outside.
57s on 4 toms
2 pencil condensers for OH
pencil condenser on ride
ribbon on hats
large condenser for room

Nice I have tried ribbons on hats before, makes me want to buy a ribbon mic now!

the only thing that wasn't desirable using the ribbon, being fig-8, was the bleed from the cymbals above my hats
