Is this related to the problem I reported on RC8 about disable/enable of plugins causing noise?

Oh no, now that we get the possibility to display all the metadata in the MX columns I forgot to suggest an option to add a column that shows file's sample rate. For me it would be useful to sort files based on SR. But I guess for this release it is too late.. maybe for the next one?
Anyway big up for this release! A ton of useful features are included!

I'm hoping that the plan is to get these big feature updates out the door so the dev's can go back and finalize RE! =]. In the meantime, I'll just stick with the DEV version

6.16 not running at all on my linux system
been waiting for two features to finally get folded in before upgrading and they're finally here (item markers, media explorer rate control). just downloaded and tried to run as i always do on my ubuntu 20.04/kde 5.18.5 system. that would be as a portable install. extracted the tar and copied the reaper folder to my home/opt folder and tried to run reaper but no luck. it keeps hanging when i try to start it. graphics freeze. sometimes the splash is still up. it seems to be finding my .config info but won't run. not sure what else to say.

Ok, I tried.
Happens in 6.16rc8, 6.16 release, and... drum roll...6.16rc3 as well.
The noise is stronger when bypassing/un-bypassing effects like rea-pitch that cause high latency difference.
If needed I can try providing a minimal project to reproduce it.

if i try running as root it's a little better. the graphics don't freeze before i even get started but the audio device doesn't work, throws an error. checked prefs against my v6.09 portable install and they are the same. 6.09 plays fine, 6.16 doesn't. permissions match on both executables.
thx,

@babag Which audio backend are you using Jack? Alsa ? I'm presuming you wont be using Pulseaudio.
Can you paste the terminal output when you run Reaper please, it might give some insight to the problem. I am quite new to Reaper but not Linux Audio in general.
Another question have you tried running Reaper from the extracted folder itself and not as a portable install? [[ EDIT I now understand this is how the portable install works oooops ]]
Also maybe give some info on your graphics card etc. thanks.
I was having hangs today with Reaper while messing with my Nvidia GPU/Intel internal settings | my kernel and system are pretty much hacked for realtime audio, but probably not entirely safe from system lockups |. Weirdly the hang would happen on launch if i was context clicking the Reaper icon on the sidebar to see if ' Launch using dedicated graphics card ' was an option.
And it's usually not a good idea to run a userspace program as root, this can make config files unwritable when running the program as a normal user.

that's all it says when i run from the command line. it says 'killed' as i terminated reaper from a system dialog that said reaper was hung.

that's what it says when i run v6.09. this one has 'deactivated client' and 'close client' as i exited reaper normally in this instance. v6.09 runs normally.
this is the first time i've had any issues like this with a linux portable install. have run quite a few over time.
thanks,
babag

I just tried running Reaper 6.16 with Jack instead of ALSA and it works fine for me using Manjaro 20.1.

+ VST: fix compatibility with a mixture of Waves VST3 shell plug-ins installed
There is still sh*tloads of bugs with saving presets with Shelled plugins.
Easiest way to check with VST2 versions:
Load a Waves plugin on a track (VST2)
Save a preset
Drag a copy of the plugin to a different channel
Open GUI of the new plugin
There are no presets saved.
If you now save a preset, it will save it to the main shell file .ini, (vst-WaveShell2-VST 11.ini) and NOT into the respective (vst-WaveShell2-VST 11-xxxxxxxxx.ini) so if you next time drag a copy of any shelled plugin, it will show the presets saved for all the dragged plugins.
This is slightly different and more erratic with the VST3 version.

bug with some of the insert actions in media explorer.
If you have multiple takes on an item and you replace source, it starts looping the wrong take.
that's default media explorer toolbar

more info on the issues i'm having with v6.16 in ubuntu studio.
i thought i should see if the issues might be more general than i'd been thinking and decided to go back to see if other versions had the same issue. i'm currently running v6.09 and have been waiting to upgrade once both take markers and the media explorer's rate control had been folded into a release. that seems to be v6.16.
i tried v6.15 and had the same issue of reaper hanging on boot.
i know v6.09 works so i went to v6.10. that also worked.
moved on to v6.11 and ran into the same bootup issue. so, it would seem that something changed between v6.10 and 6.11 that is causing this behavior.
hope this is useful. i'd really like to upgrade now.
thanks,
babag

It seems like this bug(?) is still present: https://forums.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=112365
A docked Media Explorer doesn't get focused when it's opened by the action "Media Explorer: Show/hide Media Explorer". If the docker has multiple tabs, there is a workaround, that is to execute the action three times (open, close, and open again), and then it's focused. I'm on Mac OS 10.10.

Removing a shortcut from the shortcut list of Media Explorer crashes REAPER. I could reproduce this with a clean portable install. I use the 64bit version on Mac OS 10.10.

None of us running Reaper for Linux are having the problem that you're having, with any of those versions, as far as I've seen anyway (in the discussions we've been having). Maybe it's your specific setup possibly including any scripts you're running in Reaper. Have you tried a fresh portable install so that you know you're testing Reaper "itself" without any of your current configuration, or plugins for that matter (or Wine, etc.)? More recent versions of Linux have had Wine updates and some people have had issues which required a bit of troubleshooting. (I don't bridge at all, so I wouldn't have experienced this.)

Thanks, this is fixed for the next build, and we may put out a release sooner than later with the fix too.

If 6.16 hangs on startup, can you do the following in a separate terminal:
Code:
$ sudo apt-get install gdb
$ ps a|grep reaper|grep -v grep
(this will print a line, the first number is the process ID of reaper, e.g. 1234)
$ sudo gdb -p 1234
once gdb gives you a (gdb) prompt, run:
(gdb) bt
show us the output of that "bt" command
Thanks!

thanks for the input james. is your suggestion something i could accomplish by simply renaming the ~.config/REAPER folder? i'm in the middle of some things and don't want to screw up my existing v6.09 setup but i do see that, on booting reaper, my screen layout is being retained from the aforementioned ~.config/REAPER folder.
thanks,
babag

Thanks, it would be great if you could take a look at the two posts above that, too.
I tested it out again on a clean portable install, and It seems that, to get a docked Media Explorer focused immediately after the execution of the action "Media Explorer: Show/hide Media Explorer", the docker needs to be already visible. In other words, the docker needs to have multiple tabs, so it's already visible before Media Explorer is opened. Otherwise the Media Explorer tab doesn't get focused, and the focus is still on the arrange. I hope it helps.

made some progress on the hanging-on-bootup issue that seems to have started for me after v6.10/64 on linux.
i bit the bullet and tried debugging the ~.config/REAPER folder. what i found is that everything seems fine except the reaper.ini file. i renamed the .config/REAPER folder and reaper created a new one. then i started moving things over to the newly created folder from the old one. everything worked except when i copied the reaper.ini file.
after that i started going through the reaper.ini file and adding and replacing sections in it until i found where it was hanging. what i found was that, pretty much, everything was ok in the reaper.ini file with the exception of this section:
Code:
[trackmgr]
colwid_0=30
colwid_1=236
dock=1
flags=0
wnd_height=362
wnd_left=0
wnd_top=0
wnd_vis=1
wnd_width=468
if i use the old reaper.ini file, the bootup hangs. if i use the old reaper.ini file but delete the above section, it boots fine.
edit:
more info: if i run reaper with the track manager section deleted, my docker has no track manager in it. if i open the track manager and add it to the docker, thereby creating a new track manager entry in the reaper.ini file, the crashing happens again. something doesn't seem to like the track manager.
edit2:
happens whether the track manager is docked or not.
any ideas about this?

Can you send us (support at cockos) a copy of the reaper.ini that causes the hang? Also is a particular project being loaded? Does a new blank project hang too?
Also: what linux distro and windowing environment? Thanks!

sent. thanks, justin.
and to put it in a public forum for others:
ubuntu studio 20.04 with kde added.
sddm display manager.
x11 windowing.
Operating System: Ubuntu 20.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.68.0
Qt Version: 5.12.8
Kernel Version: 5.4.0-54-lowlatency
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 12 × Intel® Core™ i7-4930K CPU @ 3.40GHz
Memory: 31.3 GiB of RAM
i'm wondering if i'm the only one who keeps the track manager open all the time (though, docked).
thanks again,
babag

Not sure if these are doing anything:
- Scan all databases for new files
- Remove missing files from all databases
I click, and nothing seems to happen. I would expect a progress war, a window, a report.... anything that says that there is something going on.
At least a progress bar and "all done" note, please.

Thanks! Fixing for 6.17!
You can build a new version of libSwell which will fix this:
Code:
git clone https://github.com/justinfrankel/WDL/ ./WDL
cd WDL/WDL/swell
make
cp libSwell.so /path/to/reaper/libSwell.so

Sorry to bring this old thread back up, but I still have resize issues with iZotope Neutron 3. The plugin window resets it's size every time I open it up.
It's only an issue on OSX and not on Windows. Any fix for this in the future?
