Default Does my laptop performance make sense? Problems with 20+ tracks

I get audio breakups with 20 mono wav tracks (no FX) of more. I have tried every Reaper setting and device setting. My guess is that it might be expected?

Laptop
Win 7
Duo-core 2.1ghz 4 G RAM

I tried turning off every process and app I could and this is the best I get.

Might this be the best I can do on this laptop?

Depends on your harddrive speed. I can get far more tracks along with lots of FX on my Core Duo. Have you tried running the RATT/DPC latency thing and tracked down if anything is causing issues?

I think i should have mentioned both cores max out

When I run the checker in WaveOut (which is where I get the original stats) it stays low green except for a yellow spike here and there. I am sure WaveOut running the best is also another tell? Asio4All is worse with my laptop sound system. When I use my Digigram PCMCIA card with it's own or ASIO4All drivers that is alo worse than WaveOut.

Hard Drive hmmmmm I will have to check the specs. Would that make both cores max out?

For the heck of it I just ran the same project with my external drive on USB 2. Almost the same CPU hits.

maxed out cores playing 20 tracks with no FX? that definitely sounds like something is wrong. Turned off all your CPU scaling features in the BIOS?

No, it doesn't make sense, on the surface. What sample rate is the project? I'm not sure that even a high sample rate would make sense of this. What interface are you using?

Are you using a separate hard drive for your audio...? I am running a laptop with similar specs as yours and get far more tracks than that.If you're recording all your audio to your laptop hard drive (especially if it is 5400 rpm) I would try using an external drive (7200 rpm) and see if you get more tracks...I suspect this may be your problem...

EDIT: Both cores maxing out still doesn't make sense though...Is your machine online...?

Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate the help

It is a HP NC8430 laptop

The interface is a PCMCIA Digigram VX Pocket BUT that is not being used (as far as I know) when I am in Waveout. When i do use the Digigram it gets worse with both ASIO4All and it's own driver.

The project is 44.1K at 24 bits

I do use the internal drive. I will check the specs. I also tried and external drive and it was about the same. I will check the specs on that too

What is "scaling" in BIOS? I don't see anything like it

Perhaps the media is resampled at eqtreme settings? I'm not sure that would cause theese kinds of problems, but maybe it's worth looking in to...

My external drive is a WD Passport Essential SE on USB 2.0. It is 5400RPM. (Looks like buying that was a mistake). All the ext other drives I have are 5400RPM too so I can't compare. I did however try my flash drive and the CPU use stayed the same.

It appears this is my internal drive is 7200RPM

they call it lots of things and there's lots of variations, but it's something that tries to scale the CPU use down to save power. It really stuffs with audio. Speedstep is a common one for intel.

Sounds like you've found your issue though.
