Hey guys it's been a while! Just wanted to let you know that I've created a public google spreadsheet with different analytics you can take a look at. This might be very interesting for some of you, because it also shows the general ranking for all users that have been participating since the beginning.

Thanks to everyone that liked my mix. Happy to hear from people what they didn't like about it or preferred about other mixes.
I am away at the moment but will try to get the September song selected by 4th September.

Feedback for everyone!
Hey guys, Dave here. So, I've listened to all the entries and now have feedback for everybody that entered the competition.
ID 01 - GERMANO
- ok ambient intro... a bit too "flat" though
- too much bass! I can't hear the drums (judging on the past months, I would say you have reflection problems in your room. I suggest to reference professional mixes to improve your work)
- vocals need automation... in certain sections are too loud and in others too quite in my opinion
- guitars do not pop in the chorus and are not eq'd very well
- the piano is quite boring frankly
ID 02 - BJORG
- very good balancing, but maybe still too much bass. The mix is very pleasing to my ears
- the intro is well mixed and works well
- the guitars are too quiet in the chorus, they should be more in your face
- I would personally add just a touch (more) of reverb on the drums to fit with the general mood
- by looking at the waveform, I can say that your mix is too compressed. It sounds good to be, but let the transients breath a bit more next time
- the vocals are perhaps slightly too upfront and too dry. A touch of reverb wouldn't hurt
- again, the piano is boring
ID 03 - FERGLER
- I had the feeling that the intro could have been mixed a bit better
- BUT the rest is really well balanced, good
- the drums sound good (but the snare is too quiet)
- the guitars are a bit hidden in the loud parts
- the whole is mix is very kick-centric (look at the waveform transients), which is a good thing if that's what you were going for
- after the first chorus, that weird sound effect was too loud
- I liked the fx on the vocals, especially in the ambient parts I think they fit well
- the piano still sounds boring
ID 04 - KGARELLO
- right away I thought the kick, the bass and the vocals were too loud
- good overall balancing
- the vocals could have been compressed just a bit more because sometimes it's a bit out of control (dynamically speaking)
- the guitars sounds good
- the delay on the piano was not appropriate in my opinion
ID 05 - DARJAMA
- the intro was really well mixed
- I didn't like the vocals
- way too much bass... there is a build up at 80 Hz. You could have tamed that with a multiband compressor or with a dynamic eq
- in the bridge, I really liked how you created interest by well balancing the tracks and by adding reverb (and delay?). The reverb could have been longer though... the tail ends too soon
- I really didn't like the piano
- the ending was pure chaos... kick and snare are completely drowned by the other instruments
ID 06 - LOOBMONKEY
- too much bass
- good vocals but more de-essing would have helped tame certain frequencies
- the kick drowns in the chorus
- the bass lacks attack
- kick and bass had to be eq'd a bit better to really complement each other
- in the bridge, the delay repeats for too long
- good mix in general
ID 07 - WIZARDOF7
- during the intro, the guitars were too loud
- you didn't de-ess the vocals (or if you did, then not enough)
- too much bass
- the kick is too quiet and can be easily heard just in quiet sections
- the distortion was intentional? it didn't fit at all in my opinion... it was just, strange
- the piano was too loud
General notes
To my users I noted that there was too much bass (except Fergler imho). Now, it might be my room to a certain degree. Try referencing your mixes with professional ones hope this was helpful and this month I'm going to participate as well, because I want some feedback

Wow Dave, that's really good of you to do this, if I had the time, I'd go through and make comments on your comments , but I just don't have the time.
You make a good leader Dave.

ID 01 - GERMANO
"ok ambient intro... a bit too "flat" though"
- perhaps in crescendo
"too much bass! I can't hear the drums (judging on the past months, I would say you have reflection problems in your room. I suggest to reference professional mixes to improve your work)"
- yes, i have a little room with iLoud but using more my headphones to not disturb others. I will try to use more often the iLoud monitors.
"vocals need automation... in certain sections are too loud and in others too quite in my opinion"
- Make automation but seems not well done.
"guitars do not pop in the chorus and are not eq'd very well"
- I think you are saying that the guitar do not contribute to the rhythm of the chorus. More transient, more attack and more presence at the begining of the sound.
"the piano is quite boring frankly"
- I give it to much presence. Yes it is too boring. Perhaps move it back a little and drop the volume and some effect.
Precious tips.
Now i will wait monthly for your tips.
Thank you very much Dave.

hi Germano
you don't necessarily need to mix with your monitors (even though it would be a lot easier). Just make sure to reference your mix on different systems. When you think you're done, import a song you like and compare it with your mix that way you get very close to a professional level product without spending any money on extra monitors or acoustic panels.
how are those iLoud monitors? I wanted to try them out
for the guitars yeah with "pop" I meant a mixture of different things (volume, eq, compression, and tape saturation).
I think for the piano, the best thing would have been to add a nice reverb in parallel and blend it in with the dry piano

Thanks again for your helpful answer Dave.
The iLoud monitor have a bass quality that is impressive for a small monitor. The sound is very flat (i put all the bottons behind in flat mode). Good for mixing. I also know that the Yamaha HS7 and HS8 are better sounding with overall better quality and flat too (but i have no space for them).
For traveling the iLoud is a very good choice for mixing. For multipurpose things there is also some little Genelec models with huge sound quality (not so flat).

Thanks for that critique Dave!
The bass was a tough one to mix. Really poor timbre to begin with.
Generous compression and this wild EQ was my answer:
http://puu.sh/xv1sY/528de172d4.png
The vocals got the most attention. As you noted in other's mixes, they needed some compression/automation to balance them across the mix.
I tried compression and was not happy with it alone. I did a lot of boosting of individual words and a many manual de-esses (this is now my favourite editing task! Seriously. I'll do that work for hours.. hmu with your $$ if you hate it )

Thanks for the critique of my mix Dave. Appreciate you taking the time.
Really annoyed I sent in a mix with the bass too loud. I had some plugins to help with that on the master bus but forgot I'd disabled them when I rendered. Oh well, that will teach me to check next time.
