Default MIDI overdub - incorrect lenght (FIXED)

I enjoy the new overdub mode (i am also quite excited to see that we can open the midi editor while recording and quantize on the fly !)

But there is a confirmed bug : when i open the midi editor, the pattern is longer than what is shown in the track (not at all like the previous mode before v1,35), and there is a too long note in the end making the track one bar too long.

Here is a screenshot to get myself better explained :
- you see on the main zone that the pattern should be 4 bar long ;
- in the midi editor, it is 5 bar long, with a long note in the end

overall, i think the whole "midi (what you see in the track)to midi editor" needs to be refined. cutting out a loop for instance, its rather annoying to still have those other bits in the midi editor you already cut out!!!

What we need is the "Open Copy ..." behaviour - without the Copy.

And it needs to be optional, too.. how should the option be exposed?

I'm not sure to really understand everything here about, so forgive me if my answer is out of topic.
What i understand is that : if you trim/cut/chop/slice a midi clip to make it something different, if you open it in the midi editor, you still have the old one, because you have made a reorganization of an existing clip, but not created a new one. That's it ?

One solution could be to implement a request i -and others- had made some weeks (months ?) ago :
instead of being some kind of an option, if we could have a feature to "bounce" (merge slices and copy the new clip to a new track) -both for audio and midi), it would both solve this problem and add a killer feature to the Reaper arsenal -both for audio & midi- !!
Am i correct, or didn't i understand well what you're talking about ?

Here is what i found in the forum about this :

That's correct, though I think the "merge" discussions you reference are a separate topic.

The confusion with the current behaviour is caused by the fact that people cut up their MIDI clips into Items on the Timeline, then open a selected Item and expect the contents of the MIDI editor to be in sync with the Timeline. This isn't the case, unless they select "Open copy".

The current behaviour is technically correct because the Items you make are simply references to the original file, but people get confused because they're looking at the Timeline when they do their edits and hence are thinking of everything being in sync with the Timeline.

I think this would be best under the "Editing Behaviour" Preferences. I think people are going to prefer to work one way or the other.

Another option could be to sync the MIDI editor to the Timeline when using the normal "Open items with Editor" function. I'd actually prefer this, as it would be technically correct (i.e. still referencing the original file) but it would take you directly to the relevant part of the file. Of course the downside of this is that any changes you'd make would affect the original as well as the selected Item ... or is this not the case now that MIDI is part of the Project?

Cheers,

Malcolm.
