Default New Song - Blockchain

I finally got off my musical vacation and worked up a new song.
I took a month and a half off from recording to clear my head.

Anyway, I decided to write something with a lot of changes.

This one features Polymod on some smoking guitar and synth solos.
I'm playing 5-String bass, acoustic drums, keys, and guitar.

I do a lot of double kick on this coz I wanted to mess around with my new double kick pedal. Did I mention there are a lot of changes in this song?

It's titled "Blockchain" at:

Loving the drums in this, esp some of the kick sections, but the bass could use some more power or punch. To me, it's the shyest element of the mix. Great synth lead!!!

Thanks Sammy! You are right, the bass ended up being a bit subdued from me trying to make sure all the other parts came through in the mix. I'll do a remix in about a week, and that will be one thing I will address.

I prolly went overboard with the double kick stuff, but this was the first song I got to use my new DW double kick pedal on. My buddy Poly has all the old school keyboards, like Prophet 5, Minimoog, a Korg, a real Fender Rhodes 73, and some other stuff.

BTW, this is the little Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove drum kit that I'm playing on this song.

Someone should invent a way to power bitcoin mining with double kicks. I know a couple of bands that would get rich in no time.

Sounds great. Drums are fully acoustically recorded without dicking around with sample replacement? You can never know nowadays, I instinctively assume shenaningans when hearing perfect sounding drums.

Hehe, I like that idea!

Thanks Zeekat! The drums on this are pure acoustic drums with no digital trickery. I had posted a section of the drums before the song was totally completed, because I was jazzed about the sound I was getting with just four mics.

The isolated clip of just the drums is located here:

Always wanted to be able to drum
A small simple drumset is always the most beautifil to watch.
Nice song by the way

I love the 90s racing game-like themes.

Thanks Mikael.

I used to have this giant double bass with 7 toms and snare drum kit.
Note: The pic was grabbed from a VHS tape.

But I've gone the other direction now and really prefer owning and playing small drum kits.

Oh man, I used to love the interactive music that would calm down if you stopped, and then get cranked up and more busy as you put the pedal to the metal.

Hehe, I still play Need For Speed (several versions in fact), and have a dedicated game computer in my studio with a high end force feedback stick.

Thanks Morgon. I love that little kit, and play it every single day. I highly recommend the Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove.

I used to play live two or three times a week, and had the bigger red set of PDP by DW drums in my avatar. When I quit playing live, I sold them and bought the Breakbeats to put in my studio. Since then I have been talked into going out and playing live again, although less frequently, and that is now the kit I'll be gigging with.

I burned CD after CD taking different adjustments out to listen on my car stereo last night until finally settling on this mix, which sounded pretty balanced in the car.

Sounds good to me. Love the bass, the sound of it and the playing, fits the track and the drums like a glove. Like the chord progressions too, the kind of movement that keeps me awake at the wheel. Catchy guitar leads. Nothing i can think of to change. Nice work.

Thanks Gary.

The bass I'm playing is a 5-String OLP Stingray that I bought about fifteen years ago before they stopped making them. It's got passive electronics, but still gets a real unique tone that is similar to the US Stingrays. I played the drums last on this song, after recording all the other parts to a scratch drum loop for a metronome. My buddy Polymod is playing all the hot guitar and keyboard solos.

Thanks Hugo. I'm just getting re-acquainted with having double kick pedals again. Last time I had double kick pedals they were each attached to 24" Ludwig bass drums, but that was about 35 years ago. I kind of over used them on this song, but since I'm not trying to get a record deal, or any radio play and am just recording and writing for my own amusement, I figure I can get away with it.

Good stuff.

It's got some Zappa-like wackiness. Love it.

You are seriously talented. Dang!

Hmmm... I swear I thought I heard a piece of The Price is Right theme song?! lOL

Thanks! I'm a huge Zappa fan, but in this case it was Poly's horns with glockenspiel that gave it that Zappa feel. Might have been my progression that made him think to go there, I don't know for sure.

I can't remember what the music is for Price is Right sounds like. I'll have to go look that up on YouTube.
