Default MIDI controller recognized but no output

Hello all!

So I just unboxed my new little MidiPlus AKM320 MIDI keyboard controller. Following Kenny's video, I plugged it into my desktop (Windows 10). I did not see any drivers being installed, but when I opened up Reaper, the device shows up in Preferences / MIDI hardware settings.
I enabled IN/OUT by double-clicking, checked "Enable input and output for this device" boxes.
Set a track to Input: MIDI, AKM320, All Channels.
Turned up KB and Track volumes.
Chose a VSTi in EFX (bass).
"Record Monitor" is on (green).
Armed track to record.
Played keyboard, but mixer doesn't show any input, hitting transport RECORD records nothing.
Track is not muted, no other tracks are Solo.
Also put VSTi in INFX (not sure which to use)
Tried a different USB cable, everything the same.

So what am I missing?

(Sorry for the long post, I'm trying to be complete.) TIA for your help!
