Default Most Detailed FREE Sample Drumkit Ever !

EDIT : There are now various versions of this kit out at :
www.smmdrums.wordpress.com

These included kontakt, sfz, tx16wx and 2 reaper versions (all of which are 32 velocity layers with upto 8 round robins).

Only the version called MegaReaper Drumkit has 127 velocity layers and 2 to 4 round robins, with the wav files being multichannel.

So we have versiosn to suit each and every need and taste.
================================================== ============

After much blood, sweat and tears its finally ready :

SM MegaReaper Drumkit !

This is a VERY deeply sampled classic / vintage Ludwig 65 / 69 drum kit that has exclusively been developed for Reaper (no add-ons required). It may well be one of the deepest sampled kits in the world. And it is completely dry for you to sculpt as you like using Reaper’s superior processing.

And if you don't have Reaper , you can use the included 1.9 GB of open 24 bit wav samples in whatever sampler you choose.
The samples are precisely named so mapping should be a breeze. But you should at least try the included Reaper kit even if you are not a Reaperite.

A demo running the Lite Version (with zero processing barring eq for high passing) :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxI...ew?usp=sharing

What makes it so special ?

Glad you asked. The instrument has :

Kick : 127 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Snare No Ring : 127 velocity layers x 4 round robins
Snare Studio Ring : 127 velocity layers x 4 round robins
Snare Rimshots : 51 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Tom 1 : 49 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Tom 2 : 49 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Tom 3 : 49 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Hihat - Closed : 127 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Hihat - Foot Closed : 46 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Hihat - Foot Open : 46 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Hihat - Loose : 127 velocity layers x 4 round robins
Hihat - Open : 26 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Ride 17 - 49 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Ride 17 Bell - 49 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Ride 20 : 49 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Ride 20 Bell : 45 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Crash 15 : 45 velocity layers x 2 round robins
Crash 17 : 45 velocity layers x 2 round robins

Yes, you read that correct. The main snare (a classic 1965 Ludwig 5"x14" Jazz Festival Snare drum) has 127 velocity layers and 4 round robins !! The kicks and hats also have 127 velocity layers and 2 round robins !! And I can confirm, it is a pleasure to play and program.

Pick up your jaw off the floor and let’s move on.

The mic channel layout is as follows :-

The Snare: four separate mics (Top, Bottom, Stereo combining Left & Right overheads mic).

The Kick Drum: one close mic as well as Stereo combining Left & Right overhead mics.

The Toms: one close mic as well as Stereo combining Left & Right overhead mics.

The Hats : One Stereo combining Left and Right mics.

The Cymbals : One Stereo combining Left and Right mics

Yes, that is correct. Each of those 127 x 4 snare samples have 4 mic channels (it’s a 4 channel / track wav file). So effectively its 127 x 4 x 4 = 2032 samples just for just one snare articulation !!

ALL of the samples are multi-channel with the minimum being hats and cymbals (2 channel true stereo) and the main drums being 4 channels. ALL of the samples are unprocessed and un-normalized to preserve their natural dynamics. You can tweak them in a myriad of ways to your liking.

The Reaper instrument provides control over EACH mic channel. Example : for the snare you can mix in some more top mic channel , apply compression to the bottom mic channel and reverb to the overhead channels. Then you can further process these 4 channels combined in the snare bus.

The general flow is :

MIDI In / Drum Sequencer
|
V
Samples (multi channel wav files having upto 127 velocity layers and 4 round robins)
|
V
Samplers (RS5K instances where the basic sample playback behavior /ADSR / MIDIMap can be tweaked)
|
V
Drum Mic Channels (where you can set the mix amount and processing for each mic depending on what’s available)
|
V
Drum Buses (where you can process the combined bus for each kit piece)

There is a very clear and helpful manual to get you started :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxI...ew?usp=sharing

You should read it cover to cover (it’s a short 21 pages only) to understand the instrument (which has a lot of levels).

There are 2 versions available for you to choose from based on your requirement and system specs :

SM MegaReaper Drumkit
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxI...ew?usp=sharing
It requires a minimum of 6 GB RAM and 2 GB HDD space
This is the full kit with all the details as mentioned above.

SM MegaReaper Drumkit Lite
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxI...ew?usp=sharing
It requires a minimum of 4 GB RAM and 1 GB HDD space
This is the kit with no round robins (yet ALL of the velocity layers) and only 1 Crash, 1 Ride and no HH Loose articulation. It still sounds fantastic.

Note : Make sure that the mixer (Ctrl + M) and the screensets (Ctrl + E) windows are visible and docked in Reaper at the bottom to maximize your experience. And please do read the manual.

Please use this thread for any queries and clarifications or email me (mentioned in the manual).

CREDITS

All sampling done by the extremely generous forum member SMM (details in the manual)
All sample editing by Suleiman
All instrument development by Suleiman
Technical Advise by Tod and SMM

There are plans for an even better sampled kit with more articulations, but that may take a while.

Legal note:
These samples were recorded and created by Reaper forum member SMM.
SMM is offering these drum and cymbal samples to the public royalty free (free of charge) to use in any audio/video production
for both commercial and private use. This is a "free use" license. No payment is required to use these samples in any production.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you do not have enough RAM

OR

do not want multi-mic control

OR

do not want 127 velocity layers (yes I admit it’s a slight overkill)

THEN

please use Tod’s excellent stereo samples based kit for Reaper, made from the same set of raw files by SMM, but completely differently edited / normalized and with much less velocity layers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have the full Kontakt , he has shared a multi-mic version for Kontakt, but again these are completely differently edited samples from mine and with much less velocity layers.

Links to both his RS5K and Kontakt instruments are here :

Wow man, you must be a glutton for editing punishment that's the first thing I want to say.

I just happen to have 6 GB RAM and 7200 spin drive so I guess that means I will be taking the heavy version.

I have a hunch I'm going to really like this.

Thanks !
Check out the demo ... Thats the Lite version !

And working with drum samples is something like meditation for me, but yeah sometimes it gets crazily frustrating and much-gnashing-of-teeth endeavour.

Make sure to check out the manual.

Really great ! There is one track "DRUM MIXER", if you mute this track, the whole drum is muted, but I can´t see any routing and the inserted REaComp does not work at all, no incoming signal ?

okay I see, Ratio of compressor is 1:1, so there is no compression !

Please read the manual.

Press cntl+e to see the screenset and cntl+m to see the mixer.

The folders tracks are minimized in some cases. Double clicking on them shows the available tracks for that view.

Each screen set is mapped to function keys f4 to f8 is mapped to different layouts that show some tracks and hide others both in the TCP and the MCP. F8 will show all the tracks.

All the effects except the EQ are disabled , and you need to enable and tweak the fx to your liking.

Please read the manual. Its only 21 pages but will explain a lot.

Thanks, have just noticed download link for Manual. I see, there are hidden tracks, I forgot you can do that, I usually never have to do it. Good job, Suleiman.

Wow. You should write a book on drum mapping. You must have done more of it than any other human being.

Good job on this suleiman.

One thing to note that many may not realize is that although the cymbals are stereo, the drum samples are multi-channel samples. As far as I know, I think RS5K is the only sampler that can handle multi-channel samples.

Although that's true, the kit still has more velocity layers than almost any other kit out there, commercial or otherwise.

O sensei ! Yes absolutely . Plus its definitely the more professional package...and more usable in general because of it all being stereo....I'm just an amateur....... My purpose was to make an awesome drum instrument for Reaper exclusively...something that makes non Reaperites go "dang !!"

I mentioned the point about the files being multi channel in the first post..as well as the manual.. And yeah RS5k is cool like that with handling those files...here's hoping for some better RAM utilization / or DFD implementation and single instance RR's and choke groups in the future...

just made a short track with your new drums.
The first time I used your drums and also megababy.
Well, I like it, but there are two things I do not understand.
1. When I insert a fx plugin into "Drum Mixer" the inserted plugin
affects every track in the Project (guitars, bass whatever) !?

2. I bounced Midi from Megababy to Reaper´s track called SM MegaReaper Drumkit. Midi is recorded, but when you deselct Megababy in order to play Midi the drums do not sound exactly the same any more, why so ?
I ´d like to do or try some things in Midi Editor like humanize or little quantization

This is the short track (it´s not the usual 4/4 beat, that´s why it´s a little in need of getting used to, maybe listenin´ to it twice or thrice will make it more passable) :

I think the system requirements stated are a bit over what Is needed.I have a Duo2 core @3.2 ghz and 6 ghz memory.
I went with the "lite" version. Performance meter said it was using around 2.5 ghz memory .
Went and downloaded "full" version. Performance meter says its using 5.6 ghz .Windows task manger says 4.2 ghz of memory is being used.I dont know which is the accurate one.
Even with Chrome open as I write this post and am playing a midi drum loop. One of those free samples Groove Monkey has. CPU is only showing around 10% usage.
So I think pretty much any CPU form last 8 years or so will be enough.
You can use it on a system with 6 g's of memory.Just have to gets drum part down and then render, bounce down, freeze to wave.

I just dont get why all the need for so many layers. 5 plus gigs of sample. Addictive drums clean kits sound good to me.There about 500 megs.
Is this like building the most expensive bird cage just to be able to say you built the most expensive bird cage??

I have a nominal 6 GB RAM, on an admittedly bloated lenovo adaption of win 7 64 bit.

REAPER is using around 4 GB, and while the sequence does play, there are reported 400+ memory allocation fails, and quite a lot of missing GUI.

I think I will separate off kick and snare as individual track templates and see if I can use it like that.

I do like the 127x velocity layering.

The drum mixer is the parent folder track summing up the channels so any fx applied there will effect ALL the drum pieces. You should apply the fx either at the drum buses level or the drum channels level on the individial kit piece track.

The midi loops work fine on my side. However the MIDI map varies slightly from the GM standard so those loops may not work correctly. Its a small difference mostly from note 41 to 45. See the MIDI map in the manual or the included text file.

Regarding the memory , the samples are not 5 GB but thats how RS5k uses the RAM with 2 GB plus of samples.

Approximately, it doubles the RAM. This is one of hoped for improvements.

Yep that bird cage example is great !

I ran tests with this and compared with AD2 and EZD2 and BFD3 ( all demos , but they are all supposed to have all the velocity layers as the full versions ). It was a snare crescendo roll and this wins hands down for expressiveness and realism. Only other software in the same ball park was drumasonic, but in bfd3 myabe there are expansions with a similar level of detail.

Basically this was a dream of mine i made it reality with help from SMM and Tod.

Thank you Suleiman, it sounds very good. Great concept, with the 127 layers.

I have just one small problem. When I go to save my project, Reaper tries to save all the samples with the project file. I know this is probably a setting on my end, but does anyone have a suggestion for how to avoid this?

You are welcome.

Uncheck the option "Copy all media into the project directory" in the Save As dialogue box.

I have finished the tx16wx patches for the stereo samples (see the link to Tod's thread in my original post)...its being beta tested by my esteemed cohorts...

There is apparently a tx16wx --> sfz converter, and after the tx16wx patches are finalized I will convert, test and include the sfz as well....

but what will you use it in ? There is no free sfz player that can give multi-outs which is very important in such a kit...and if you are going to use tx16wx sampler, then why not use the tx16wx patches themselves ?

LEGAL NOTE added to the original post.

Basically :

Legal note:
These samples were recorded and created by Reaper forum member SMM. SMM is offering these drum and cymbal samples to the public royalty free (free of charge) to use in any audio/video production
for both commercial and private use. This is a "free use" license. No payment is required to use these samples in any production.

Thanks for the work you have put into these projects, SMM, Tod and Suleiman. This is a great sounding kit, and this is coming from someone with Steven Slate Drums IV and its expansions, all the NI Abbey Road Drummer kits, as well as several large third party sample packages like NS_Kit_7.

Very cool of you guy to make this available.
