Yes, someone please take the ball and run with it. Look, I see a scout in the stands!
I started doing this for myself, but I could aswell share it.
Consider it just a start, very unfinished. Feel free to update, correct it or whatever.
I think categorising the tips as the list hopefully grows wouldn't also be a bad idea...

First time I've used Google docs, hope it'll workout.
(I'd suggest also updating the online document if you post tips here.)

@ Mods:
maybe this link could also be put in the first (Schwa's) post for better notification

Cool Nofish - word processing in a browser. Call me slow. I just discovered pixlr.com as well. Great idea. The WIKI should probably benefit from these tips too. It looks neglected.

Oh, some preference tips would be helpful too, like the setting for how we can zoom in and out ie, based upon the pointer or the center of the screen, etc.

Ha, call me slow also. Just discovered Google docs a minute before posting this when looking for a way that various people could contribute to a document. Don't even know how I exactly discovered it... (probably using Google hehe)

In arrange view, change the volume for a media item by click-dragging on the very top of it after you see the cursor change (top of the boundary).

Updated the GoogleDocs file with many of the tips put in to categories.

All stuff sorted in to categories, so far that is. Feel free to dump tips in to the Unsorted section.

A lot of unsorted stuff to sort out though. Categorized stuff is below the non-categorized.

Very groovy, man. This kind of thing bridges the gap between the manual (too much information in some cases when you just want a simple one liner) and keyboard shortcuts (which are often too minimal in their reference of what good they can do).

I think we have a winner here. And if Reaper sprouts these tips from within the app. that would truly be...even more awesomer than awesome.

I'm a pretty optimistic person, but I do wish that there was a way to have a password for this doc that was only accessible to logged-in users of the Forum. I know that probably sounds paranoid, but...

Well, that would be safer. But chances are that it's not searchable so most web vandals would never find it. Just an opinion, not proof that it can't happen.

Can this be hosted on someone's personal site? Or does Google own it?

What about having a version editable by anyone, like now, and one "official", only accessible for download, that one person only mantains by integrating all good content coming from the freely editable one?

isn't there a way to make a community sticky?

seems like this could be the best option... this way it would stay here, could be download-able, and would stay editable in the long-run.

i vote for having something like this worked out to where the sticky wouldn't have any other content on it (no new posts for example).

not sure how the internals of the forum work, as i've never played moderator on a forum like this (i've seen many others like it though).

thanks

All this stuff is added. Done a little formatting to clean it up and make it more printable.

If you want an empty line between bullets, simply make a new line with a bullet with the return key, and then remove the indent of that line or press the bullet list icon. The line(s) your cursor is on will have the bullet removed.

Keep the tips coming and if you don't feel like sorting them in to a category, just put them up in the Unsorted section at the top.

It says (under "TCP/MCP"):
* You can double click the folder icon of a folder track to switch among three different view modes

But it is not double click, is it? Single click... double clicking just works as two single clicks.

EDIT: Great job, BTW. Lots of goodies there

We'll do that later. For now, it's this thread and that document. Any tip you post here will be put in to that document.

And it's easy to grab a copy of that document in any format too.

OK,here's a useful one

'alt+space bar' will play back song skipping time selection, handy for auditioning cuts to an arrangement

This is neat: wherever you click in the timeline, you can have the selection follow you around by simply clicking on Shift "{" for left limit of selection or Shift "}" for right limit. You can even do this while the project is running. It's spooky!

(that's the squiggly bracket, not the straight one ie "[" )

Also:

Shift - F1 for keyboards Shortcuts list / Then command F & G to search document /
Shift - ? for Actions /
F2 - gets you media item properties when that item is selected.

EDIT: added to list.

Thanks Airon.

As I started this document, I could also put it to private and share the PW, like it's been suggested, but optimistic as I am, I'd rather leave it open...

Create sends for many tracks at once to a single target track like reverb fx tracks, by selecting all your source tracks, right-clicking on the I/O button and picking the appropriate send target.

A send will then have been created to that target track on each of your selected tracks.

The same method can be applied the other way around. Pick your target tracks, then right-click on the I/O button and choose a receive source instead of a send target.

This will create a send the source track to each of your selected target tracks. Before you selected source tracks, now you selected target tracks first.

Default Separate Audio Folders

To have a separate audio/media subfolder in your project folders:

In Project Settings (under Path to save media files),

type Audio (or Media etc, whatever you want to call it).

You can save this with a default template project, and point to it in preferences/project/project settings/(When creating new projects)... so that all new projects have separate audio subfolders.

All added to the document. I keep a backup after each editing operation btw, just in case some #(^%*&#^%*^*@^*&@#^(^$&^$# spoils it.

I think you mispelled "#(^%*&#^%*^*@^*&@#^(^$&^$#." There should be an "!" in it.

Wait, I feel a tip coming on - click "help" to import a media item.

Thnaks to muiscbynumbers for this one

"A good way to just bring down automation for one area is to simply use the "time selection" to select the area (say your whole chorus area) and then simply adjust the automation fader (make sure it's in trim mode).

This adds in the points at the edges of that area and then adjusts every node within the time selection relatively."

Past versions of Reaper are on the web page, and can be downloaded hassle free, for upgrades that are practically risk free.

The Reaper project files can be opened in notepad, and are fairly comprehensible, and somewhat user editable, if done with caution.

You can change record inputs, or even add a new track and start recording with it, on the fly while recording.

Arm the desired tracks and just hit record while playing to toggle record on and off for faster punch-ins.
