Default Arrange vs Mixer scrolling ...

VOTE

Sorry to post this in here instead of the dedicated FR sub-forum; I feel it needs to be addressed during this pre-release cycle ...

///////

OSX ... REAPER v4.0alpha51a

We need proper horizontal scrolling in the mixer.

Currently, a horizontal scroll with the mouse cursor over the arrange window works as expected ... the view scrolls left/right. A vertical scroll ... scrolls vertically ... nice.

This is what happens with the cursor over the mixer window:

- horizontal scrolling scrolls the arrange view not the mixer view - why?
- vertical motion scrolling scrolls horizontally ...... unintuitive, and means that it's not possible to have mousewheel fader control enabled because the vertical scrolling motion only scrolls horizontally when the cursor is over the fader area ...... not when over the send/fx area :-/

I don't know if this is relevant to the Windows build or not ... but please can it be sorted out?

It really drives me bananas! ... thanks.

+1, please make whatever the user assigns as horizontal scroll also work on the mixer. This fucks me up every single time.

...and also include the Media Explorer waveform display. The zoom doesn't follow the user setting of the TCP etc.

Vertical scrolling does not work as expected. It's very annoying! I want a real default vertical scroll, not a default horizontal zoom !!! WTH is wrong with that??? This the default OS behavior, on any OS, BTW!

I don't have to program this stuff myself!!! I don't even know where to look.
Reaper is TOO much customizable. Too complicated. I'm a musician not a programer.
I need something that works as expected right out of the box, and just focus on making music. Not spend days on end to try to customize it to my needs.

+1 to all of the above. Consistency is always a plus, so at the very least it should be user-tested.

Also, a small idea for the mixer.

Instead of the scrollbar, a navigator-type display that displays the colours of the tracks.

It may or may not work, depending on how the colours area presented. Other information could be part of that display as well, such as small track numbers, or mouse-over track-name tooltips. I'll cook up a small mockup and post it right here.

+10000

I would also add an auto-zoom when a track is selected.

Mockup for the Mixer Navigation bar idea:

Click on the image to get the full size image:

In that image you'll see a 75 track session. On a 1920x1200 monitor that leaves at 20 pixels per track for the navigation display. Even at 300 tracks, you'll be able to have a reasonably overview. The problem may arise when the user has the mixer window resized to something so small that only a few pixels per track are possible. In that case it may be necessary to eliminate the 1-pixel divider space and just plot the track colours.

Another problem is that the theme images in the label area and the track colours mix to produce a new colour. It may be necessary to sample the actual resulting image colour to generate a more accurate 'thumbnail' colour for the mixer navigation bar.

No comments on the idea above ?

Surprising.

Look at the scrollbar in the mixer if you're wondering what this is about.

+1.000.000

it's very annoying and un-intuitive the current behaviour.
I would like to see implemented a STANDARD default behaviour.
Anyone who is approaching Reaper go crazy in this way.
Plus sometimes i am scrolling on TCP when i move -unwantedly- the mouse on the main window causing a nasty reaction.

hand-scrolling with middle mouse button as well.
I think there's a Fr for that already though.

Thanks. Of course this may not be the only way a navigator type of display could be integrated. This just jumped out at me, especially the simplistic way of displaying folders.

It's a really old, incomplete version of a theme in progress. I don't know when it'll be out.

Here's a small portion of the original screenshot:

To be clear, I'm proposing that the scroll bar simply carry additional information. Without track colouring you'll at least be able to tell where your folders are.

And will you look at that. 4000+ posts. :P

friendly but desperate bump

... and an FR

http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=3379

just vote yes

Airon's mockup is awesome, but this scrolling thing is so fundamental imo that I don't see the need to merge the two ideas at this stage.

I dunno. Similar to what we were talking about in the other thread (here for those who didn't participate), that arrow/icon based way of showing folders can be completely confusing in the mcp when you don't have the indents to go with it and you're dealing with sub folders. I'd like to see a better way to visually organize folders created for the mixer instead of elaborating on the current mediocre way.

+1 VOTED!
Airon`s mockup seems a little uncomfortable and cluttering for me. Frankly I don`t see the problem to scroll MCP horizontally as it requested in FR, without visual implementation of folders and track colors.
