I'm going to be updating my computer (to a quad core, plus more memory).
Is Dux-XP 64 or 32 bit? I want to upgrade my memory to 4 gigs, but just heard that 32bit XP is only good to 3 gigs. Is this true?

Yes and no :-)
You can get XP to recognize RAM above 3GB limit, but it seems some apps, and notably some VST's, don't work (well) with that. But then... 3 gigs, 4 gigs, price difference would be negligible, not?

No multiprocessor support
Hi,
I don't know if that toic should be raised in here.
I installed the nlited XP version, but as a "standard pc" instead of ACPI PC.
Now windows identifies only one of my 2 cores (i have a core 2 duo processor).
ACPI causes my hardware many dropouts, so i don't want to use it.
Anyone knows what is the best way to fix this?
thanks

yes.
System Properties > Device Manager > Batteries > Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery > Disable
also, disable your wifi card for added measure.
i posted this solution elsewhere in the forum a bunch of times i think, and it should be a sticky.

Have already tried that.
Only thing that did help (not perfectly though), was to install "process explorer" (downloadable from the microsoft site), and suspend the acpi thread on under the system process.
Since I do not want to do that each time i restart my computer, I wanted to disable acpi completely.
I have managed to do so, by performing driver update for the computer driver (under device manager) and selecting the "MPS Multiprocessor PC" instead of "ACPI Multiprocessor PC".
As for the results, we'll see about that soon...
Thanks,
ziflingus

i think the work involved doesnt pay for the advantages gained by using this version of xp. all the effort spent could be put into a 10 dollar an hour job and buy a better cpu.
seriously, aside from the acpi and wireless, there are not any processes running that will cause you any trouble.
at least no processes that cannot be disabled with services.msc or a "optimize my xp" reg file that you find on the net.
diminishing returns, thats what you are looking at, imo.

Updated the FTP with the full ISO.
Nihal, you don't need nlite, download the above iso file and open it with a program like nero and it will burn the disk for you. Make sure you burn at x4 speed and a normal cd not dvd.

So i need only install this from scratch and enter my serial to it and Thats it???? without install win xp pro??

Yes, this is XPpro sp3. Whether your own license key will work depends on what type it is. OEM keys are reported not to work.

Funny you say that, because I created this not so much to optimise the official WindowsXP installation, but to speed it up quite a bit . On newer computers I can install XP in 10-15 minutes now. Even installing it in a virtual machine on an older computer takes ~20mins!
Plus, you don't have to bother with any settings afterwards... just install the software. There aren't many optimisations in it, but in my experience I always use up at least an additional half to one hour on the adjustment of these settings with the official installation, not to mention that it takes a lot longer to install it and it's 2x bigger.
So yeah, I definitely agree there's not much to optimise in the standard WindowsXP installation, but if your schedule is tight this kind of installation comes really handy . And some tweaks which are included in my installation are really essential. Just a few, but essential and you just don't have to worry about them.
Cheers!

Image issues
Hi All,
I am having a problem with the images I'm getting out of nlite. When i use Dux's .ini file to load the config the CD burns and everything is sucessful, but when I put the CD into my DAW I get the "setup is inspecting your computers hardware config" message but then nothing... the text mode setup doen not show. The screen is on (I can see the backlight on the screen) and the HDD light looks asthough its constantly on but is actually flickering contsantly.
I've had fair amount of experience with nlite and have never had an issue untill now and unfortunatly I can't use the image you provided because of my MS CD keys. I have done 8 different CDs on 2 different computers, some with extra drivers and a couple just using the setup file you provided.
Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.
Thanks dude
Roo

It might sound stupid to ask this, but have you burned the ISO image properly? e.g. 4x speed or less? It certainly sounds like your computer cannot read the CD normally.
OR: You're trying to install it in AHCI mode, but the drivers for your chipset aren't there. That would be weird though... but possible. Try installing it in non-AHCI mode or provide the AHCI drivers separately on a flappy disc .
To everybody else: you should see the info in this thread...: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=30162 if you're patient enough to read it.
Cheers!

Drive issue
Hi Dux, Thank you so much for the quick reply.
It looks like it was a bad file on the primary HDD from a previous install attempt that was causing the problem. I stuck the drive into another machine and removed the volume and now its all peaches.
Sorry to have bothered you dude.
BTW Kudos on the awsome setup. With a little more tweeking to the image this win install is now 188Mb fully driver loaded. Its got all the nice windowey goodness with the speed of Linux. Me most deffinatly likey!
Thanks dude,
Roo

You're welcome roomar . Glad you solved the problem.
@ Fabian. This is not the only nLited "distro" of XP. There are actually heaps of nLited XP "distros". M$ should've given us the choice of what to install and what not in the first place. I think they sort of remedied that with Windows 7?
Cheeers!

Hey DuX, how can I reenable Internet Explorer so I can download Windows updates? I can't install IE now, I guess something critical has been disabled.
Or should I just do a multiboot and install a full version of XP?
Thanks.

JHughes - try Firefox portable instead of Internet Explorer.
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
Get a thumb drive, load this on it and use it to update whatever you need. When you are done, remove the thumb drive and voila, no extra garbage on your system. Works like a charm for me.

AFAIK you can only update windows using some version of Internet Explorer...I've never been able to update using any other browser. I don't think using a thumb drive will change that, but I don't have one to test.

Oooops. I was thinking updates for other software. Sorry I misread! If you're using DuXP, why update? Everything works great. But I do have to say that I'm using it for recording only.

I decided that I wanted to use the internet (for now anyway). The significant other needs to check her stuff too.
BUT, I just found this: http://windizupdate.com/
It's a plugin that works with Firefox etc. and allows updating, so I'm trying it immediately.
<edit> Hmm, hard to believe, but it says I don't need any updates at all!

Great tip JHughes!
Even though you shouldn't worry about updating this installation... all post SP3 patches till February this year are included. There will probably be some more worthwhile updates and when that happens, be sure I'll update DuXP, too .
Cheers!

Thanks Nickm!
Glad you like it! I have a feeling this OS will be my friend for a long time... I'm very happy with it, too. Just keep it clean, make backups every now and then and it's gonna last for years and years to come. I'm so happy to see how good it's working with these new 4 cores... ) mmmm faster then hell.
Cheers!

Yes, installation of this XP goes faster.
I have XP sp3 with all stuff in it. I manualy have tweaked it, disabled some unnecesary sirvices, themes etc. and now my XP starts ≈100 MB in ram initialy.
This XP does it too. But only for the faster installation to give it a try, well... maybe (I actually did it). But it doesn't make any difference for me.
Please let me know if there is really any better DAW performance or whatever else after the faster installation. Thanks.

Please insert Win XP Pro SP 3 CD?
During installation I get prompted to:
Please insert the disk labeled Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD Into Drive A: * Press ENTER when Ready.
And it refuses me skip this step; pressing enter without inserting any disk in A: (A:??).
I cannot recall that I have gotten this prompt on any of the other three installations I have made so far (all with valid keys, yes :-)
So I'm at odds what to do... any suggestions anyone?
PS This is an old ThinkPad X20 that I thought I might cram some more life out of by installing the DuXP on it, not for DAWing, of course.
EDIT: Strangest thing... disabling the floppy drive makes the installation work.

Cannot get Ethernet Controller work
OK, so I am trying to resurrect an old IBM Thinkpad X20 by installing the DuXP on it. I can install and it works real snappy, but... I cannot get the Ethernet Controller working.
If I do a full ordinary XP (non-DuX) install all devices get installed correctly and the network works alright, but of course the comp itself gets bogged down.
When installing DuXP I get yellow question marks in the Device Manager for:
* Multimedia Audio Controller
* PCI Simple Communication Controller
* Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
* Unknown Device
These I can live without (I think).
But I also get a yellow exclamation mark for the Ethernet Controller. Lavalys' Everst Home Edition tells me this is a 3Com 3C556 10/100 Mini-PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter, and I have DL'ed and installed drivers for this both from 3Com and from IBM/Lenovo. I have fiddled with setups and settings etc etc, but getting nowhere. I have tried to get device manager to load the driver from the original XP disk, but no go... I have installed Intel chipset drivers, updated BIOS and embedded controller, everything I can think of, but still no luck. I am now out of ideas.
Could it be that I need the PCI Simple Communications Controller installed for the mini-PCI ethernet card to get functional? Would this be part of the Intel chipset (North Bridge 82443BX/ZX, South Bridge 82371 EB PIIX4E)? Coudl I get that out from my original XP disk?
Any suggestions, hints whatever are welcome, I'd really like to get this working without installing the full XP...
EDIT: An idea... if I do the full XP install, can I somehow extract the drivers from there to then use them when I've installed the DuXP?

revert to SP2 ?
I have installed this DuX XP version on my Laptop and have found that it's not working properly with my USB audio device (Maya 44 USB). I get dropouts and freezes.
So for a test, I'd like to revert to SP2.
Is this possible without installing Windows gain ?

Fabian,
If you can't install this ISO without questions, you shouldn't even be touching a computer to begin with. The answer to your question is really simple. Go to the IBM (lenovo) website, go to the drivers page and download all the drivers for your machine.

Well, thanks Jimmy boy for your kind words.
<unnecessarily harsh attitude removed>
I've been to the Lenovo place The missing drivers are said to be included with XP, there is no DL for them.

Fabian, have you tried asio4all with your interface?
I just ask because my USB interface performs better with them than the native ASIO drivers!
Course if it worked with your original XP Install I don't know why that would change now?? hmm

Thanks for the idea, but... I am not trying to make this old ThinkPad a DAW. I know beforehand it will not work. I am just installing DuX' stripped down XP on it to try to get some more life out of it. A full XP install bogs down the laptop close to making it unusable. DuX XP makes the ThinkPad quite snappy, but DuX XP does not include all the drivers that the Lenovo website claims are included with XP for the ThinkPad X20.
That's my problem, and maybe I was unclear about that.
I did solve some of the problems though, by doing a full SP3 install. This gave me the ethernet controller so now at least I have net access. Still no luck with the drivers for built in audio card and the PCI.

I would like to install dux xp. Have the cd burned, but see that it is pro.. I have a home edition license and don't feel like getting a pro cracked version and work around the activation.
I have two questions:
1. is it possible to get a dux xp home edition? and if not, what should I do to get an (almost) near result. Like disabling services and such.
2. is tinyXP similar to duxXP? or is tinyXP also warez?

You can roll your own stripped down XP Home by using nLite and DuX' session.ini (which is included in DuX' DL) together with your original XP Home CD.
I'd say tinyXP is illegal since you do not need a valid license key to install it (do you?). DuX XP requires you to have your own license key to install. Note that some (all?) most?) OEM license keys won't work.

okay, thanks. I'll try. I haven't tried tinyXP but someone gave me the name as an alternative of a stripped down XP. I own a legit XP home license.

oh that's cool,
it should be noted that usb interfaces steal some cpu cycles (as far as I'm aware) and that will certainly cause dropouts on older computers, just wanted to state that asio4all will help this situation at least that's what I have found
I just installed DuXP on my Compaq notebook which shipped with Vista. It's a real bear to get any flavor of XP to work on this! I haven't got Reaper fully up yet, but it is good for about 12 tracks with Reaper and a factory XP install, so I am curious how this turns out. I will post my new results with DuXP when that is up and running!
My Desktop is a quad core phenom, running windows 7 RTM lol and that works pretty good. It will probably scream with DuXP, I will have to check
