Can I volume fade MIDI with CC?
Can I volume fade MIDI with CC? Say I have an item of 4 notes at the end of a track, is there CC I can enter that will can fade over the notes. I believe I can do it with envelopes, but it seems a lot to have an envelope for a whole track when I only want to affect 4 notes at the end.

Unless you specifically want to use CC, you can simply fade MIDI items with an item fade, same way you'd fade audio.

item fades on don't fade MIDI items, they reduce velocity of MIDI notes, which may or may not be link to an instrument's amp envelope.

you want unlinked automation items. investigate these settings:
Options: Bypass underlying envelopes outside of automation items
Options: Chase non-FX envelopes to automation items when underlying envelope is bypassed

Thanks. I did not know that! However, I must be missing something. I just dragged an item fade but there is no noticeable fade in the sound when played.

Which results in a fade. Come on, man.

The only time I've not seen it work is if your instrument isn't velocity sensitive, like most organ VSTi's. But it does fade (or reduce the velocities...same thing) if the instrument is affected by velocities, like most pianos. I do it all the time.

no, it's an important distinction, only if velocity is linked to volume , as previously stated, and only if you have a sequence of notes. A long sustained note won't fade, for example
it;s better to use a MIDI volume envelope or automation item

Ok you both have a point. I apologize to McCrabney. I didn't think of that.

As LugNut suggests, CC7 Volume and/or CC11 Expression will normally control the volume to do the fade out.

How is that done? Multiple CC calls with descending values?

This might be the problem.

Yes, CC7 Volume is the primary source for volume control with midi instruments.
CC11 Expression, a glorified name for another volume control, works with CC7, but only if you need it. Normally you won't need both, only CC7.
