Default Budget PA

Hi
My friend is building a man cave in a small basement (~8x3 meters).
The PA should handle e-drums and vocals.
Any suggestions? How many Watts?

I'd go 100 watts RMS with either a powered mixer, or some compact separate components. He could go with a pair of powered monitors and a mixer

I put this compact PA together for my wife using a small rack mixer, a 100 watt mono amp (or 50w stereo), and some small Jensen speakers. Mostly this gets used for an electric nylon string, but I used to use the mixer and power amp with larger speakers, specifically for my V-Drums.

The most bang for buck is either a surround sound system with amp ,going cheap these days as sound bars take over in compact housing.

Or a pair of truth 2031a monitors they are WAY BETTER Than their price suggests.

Either way you will need a cheap analogue mixer an or an interface with the inputs you need.

I'd get a cheap mixer and a couple powered speakers. Loads of uses for them. They'll always come in handy.

What year is it again?!

I'd just buy amps and speakers. (Or powered speakers. Those QSC 10" are popular monitors.)
Audio interface with the I/O you need. Some basic $50 MIDI control surface for knobs and faders. (Or just a tablet or your phone.) Reaper DAW to run everything.

You have full production at your fingers to dial up your monitors. Need some brutal bionic move to deal with something? No problem! Saved setups and you're recording multitrack of everything you do.

Vs. some 1980's era "PA head" thingy that doesn't let you dial anything up reasonably and you sure aren't recording anything?

we're just a couple of guys jamming with guitar amps and this PA.
Nothing serious at all. They are not into music making the way I am.

I pick up 800-1000W powered cabs for like $150 pretty regularly, and they’re perfectly serviceable. Not amazing, but light and well loud enough for this sort of thing. Brands like Gemini and American Music Supply are almost permanently on sale at musicians friend or decently priced on Amazon. Sometimes you can find them with stands and maybe even a completely worthless mic. I like the ones with the flashy lights built in. They all will have Bluetooth capabilities for when you want to pull up a reference or whatever, some basic mixer, and can be daisy chained.

Playing and jamming live in the living room was the sole purpose of the boom box PA I put together for my wife. She and her sister can plug in a couple of acoustic/electric guitars, some mics and jam.

That boombox PA wouldn't really be considered a budget system though. The Stewart PA50B power amp in it goes for $706.15 new, but I already had one and the Behringer RX1202FX mixer so the rack was the only new thing I had to buy.
