Default Sub crossover frequencies

Quick question which is likely not to glean a simple answer. How are people deciding their crossover frequency (for those who use subs)? I have read different opinions and I'm not clear. Does it depend on genre, taste, the room? Or should individuals factor in all of these considerations? My setup is mainly going to be used for EDM at the minute.

It primarily depends on the frequency response of your monitors and the room.

Exactly.

Just do it by ear with a friend adjusting things till it sounds ‘right’

It’s how CLA does it

Thanks for that affirmation.

I share one Yamaha sub between two sets of monitors. A set of JBL LSR308s and a much smaller set of Yamaha MSP3As.

Using the smaller Yamahas I'll set the sub level and cutoff to fill in the missing bottom, then switch back and forth between the JBLs and Yamahas to fine tune both the level and cutoff frequency.

No crossover with my ATCs, the satellites still play full range, supposed to be better for phase response according to the manual.

That's very interesting, I may try it. What I've done is to set it either at 80 or 90, which seems to be a consensus. As for using your ear to set it, I've never been able to feel confident about doing that.

I have a pair of old M-Audio BX5,s, not the best standalone speakers (Weak on bass). So I got a Mackie sub. but I've always been unsure how to set it.

This is a very needful discussion, I hope others chime in on it, because there seems to be many opinions on it.

I mean the right way to do it is with a measurement mic and frequency analyzer. Any mic will theoretically do if you have a good idea of it’s own (low) frequency response and compensate accordingly.

If I remember correctly Room EQ Wizard does mic calibration, or files can possibly be downloaded for some. Are you suggesting trialling different crossover freqs and measuring?

Going to do the new room measurement to look for any dips once I've trialled the best placement for the sub. Just going on ear, having the sub and monitors set to 12 o clock seems fairly balanced for amplitude levels. Maybe luck or maybe that the company designed them this way (A7Xs + Sub 8).
