Hi Peeps,
I am about to post a link to a collaboration I did a few years ago. I have noodled over stuff before this, and since, but in this case someone else asked me to play over a drone of theirs, and I accepted.
Reason for sharing is two fold.
1) There is a discussion going on about guitar picks in the REAPER forum and in this piece I play with a single finger, no pick.
2) I wanted to share my "tone" for this piece, which is totally accidental, unfortunately, so I can't remember how I achieved it. I DI only, for starters, and I probably used the Warm Universe preset in NI Guitar Rig. I play a PRS Studio which has one of their own 57/08 humbucker pickups at the bridge, which is probably what I used for this, rather than the "narrowfield" pickups at mid and neck.
I would also like to say that I learned a lot from this collaboration. The guy who provided the drone was quite specific about one certain aspect of the noodle.
He didn't want the drone being taken over by the noodling.
My first pass was a) too loud and b) just too much going on.
So I turned it down, for starters, and then I started ripping stuff away, keeping the "better" parts (yeah, I know... Debatable that haha!)
And, finally, I would like to explain that as boring as it may seem, playing over drone stuff, I actually find it quite liberating. I'm not having to think about either timing or what notes to play over which chords.
I know, I should "get gud" and play proper stuff, but I also play keys (badly) and I also have a modular system, all very time consuming, on top of actually having to produce, mix and master stuff, and then spend many hours "socialising" to get my stuff heard. So I am never going to be as good as someone who is able to play between one to four hours a day.
Anyway!
