Default Silent overwrite of project files when creating subdirectory (FIXED)

[update: this bug only happens if you specify projectname.rpp instead of projectname]

Heyo -- when I "save project as" and choose a filename and check the box "create subdirectory for project", if that directory and project file already exists, reaper will overwrite the existing project file silently. Seems like a bug, eh?

(Save-as'ing over an existing project file without checking that box pops up a warning about the impending overwrite, which is what you'd expect in both cases.)

Windows 8.1 64, Reaper 5.17. [edit: and 5.18]

Anyone else think this seems pretty serious? Loss of data and all that...

I'd assume it's just an oversight unless there was as previous never ask again choice which I highly doubt.

Yeah -- hopefully a 5min fix for the devs?

Haven't yet tested whether "copy/move files into directory" causes those to overwrite as well (i know a name collision would be pretty rare, but still.)

Can you make a gif to show how to reproduce it?

It normally asks if I want to overwrite, but if I do it exactly like this it saves/overwrites the RPP file without asking.

EDIT GIF removed, see clepsydrae's post #9 for better example.

Thanks, Edgemeal -- that's what I see too, and must have been what happened to me: I was doing Save Project As, not Save, and probably just edited part of the file name, leaving the RPP.

If I have an existing project dir projects\test1\test1.rpp and I navigate to \projects and have "test1" as the filename and click "save", it just navigates into the existing test1 directory: no prompts or anything because it's not saving yet.

If instead I enter test1.rpp and hit "save", it overwrites test1.rpp in the test1 directory with no prompt. It does not appear to overwrite audio files, though: if they have the same name, they just aren't written.

Dstruct -- reproducible? I saw it on 4.17 and 4.18, Win 8.1 64.

Huh, weird. Here it is on a fresh portable install (+license) on Win 8.1 64, Reaper 4.18, in case it reveals any difference in how you are checking:
