I'd like mouse wheel editing too, along with the ability to change direction
my mouse wheel can be pushed left and right, I'd like the ability to set those buttons to scroll left and right, would that be possible. Mice have all sorts of extra buttons nowadays

I'd like to see the ability to associate ".cur" files(cursors) within the mouse zone editor:

Might as well come in with a bang.

In case anyone's missed it, there is the feature request in the Issue Tracker, where you can vote for it.
http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=892
This also ties in to Tallismans wonderful idea to have active sets of simple left-and-right-click-plus-modifier action sets, that can be activated by right-clicking on a toolbar icon. And let's not forget the ideas in this thread either.

Looks good.
There IS a learning curve to this. Gotta hold my horses and take a day off now.

The Shan picture looks really great: possibilities + ease of use !
1) More advanced options should be available only after choosing "advanced mode" or deeper edit levels. It would be helpful, if the editor included a few PRESETS.
2) And what if ... one could reprogram zones on the fly by right-clicking a zone on an ITEM ITSELF and directly select a "tool" = no need to go to the preferences ?
3) the Zones could be wider/bigger if they appeared only when you're over an item, or after clicking it. Of course this would either require a "walking track height" (as displayed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb3fHQNDtdU ) or a button to toggle the mode on/off (?)
4) I still wonder what would be better: mouse zones, or easily programmable Logic tools on multiple mouse buttons auto-saved within each window/screenset. I guess the answer is... both !

I heard that lots of people left reaper in the past because of mouse issues.
Maybe it is time to push this forward to welcome and help newcomers from other daws to get used to reaper?
all are happy with the menu editor, I just talked to someone who left reaper in the past because of the overload context menu, now there is a chance that he will come back after he heard about the menu editor...
more users, better discussions, better mockups, more resources, more knowledge, better feedback, more bug reports, stable program...

Here's Tracktions zones, no editor for them but you can get a lot done with one hand and the mouse and no modifier.
Preview, slip, slide, trim, loop, etc, etc.

Hmm. I never thought about any graphical overlay or mouse-over gfx for the zones. Geez, I hope nobody wants that :P .
The above method is great for people first using the program, or just making the occasional adjustment. Every-day users of those features will tire quickly of having to place the mouse so precisely though. So one downside. If Cockos does an infostrip with shorthand information on pitch, takes and other stuff that's show/hide, this may take a backseat too.
The idea is just about the pinnacle of on-item-gfx-depicted mouse zones though.
With a mouse zones editor you could at least make this nice and large per zone, and the mouse cursors may be enough.

Hold Right click and move over note to erase with a sweep.

Hold right click for 1 sec without moving the mouse to use a slicer.

Nice set of ideas there.
To make those happen you'd need additional mouse button behaviours in the mouse zone editor, which in this case are :
Double-click and hold (tripple-click+hold anyone ? )
Single-click and hold.
Single-click and hold for x seconds without significant movement.
What else could we do ?

I used to have a mouse with an additional button that you could assign to any keyboard key (or I am sure key combination) for this having a keyboard key or combination assignable in addition to normal mouse buttons would be nice.

A slightly updated design :
Layer now stands more apart from the rest.
Rearranged layer controls for choice and editing.
Area section on the right. Only three so far. Unsure how to depict Envelope.
Zone now highlighted in red.
Added Zone description area, to which mouse cursor and actions can be dragged.
"Left MB Single Click & Hold" is one of several new possible layers.
Keyboard modifiers now arranged more like they are on a keyboard.
Clear for all mouse zone settings added for adventurous folks.

Mouse customization is now happening in the v4 alphas of Reaper. They are available for testing in the Prerelease forum.
One thread in particular is hosting the discussion about the development of Reaper in this area.
>> v4: Mouse Modifiers It's not a graphical approach, but it's damn fine and so far not very difficult to use. Get over there and take part in shaping this area of Reaper by voicing your opinions and presenting arguments for improvements.
