Regardless of its price, Rhino is surely one of the greatest synthesizers (be it soft- or hardware) ever.

Just right click the proteusVX.exe in programs or if its showing up in your windows menu. Go to properties, the compatability tab & select windows Xp mode.
it has some really good presets. But I must warn you it can cause problems in Reaper. Ive discovered this first hand & I just read a few other posts with various problems running Proteus.

+1.

I have a "full" E-MU's Proteus X2, Proteus X LE and Proteus VX. They seem to be very much the same at the core, and at least under Vista 64, there is no end of trouble with both Reaper 32 and 64.

It looks like this stuff has not been updated for ages. Which is sad, because a little maintenance on the part of E-MU could give new life to a great sound library. But then, they probably wouldn't give it away for free anymore...

Yes I wasnt really looking for a Rompler but I was very impressed with Proteus. I was having a lot of fun with it until Reaper crashed just as I was saving the project. I wonder if anyone has got it running stable, maybe through changing some settings in preferences? Right I'm of to try out Rhino.

Right I've Demoed Rhino & was very impressed especially as its only €70.
Maybe its because I'm more a Guitarist than a synth player, I found it a bit awkward to find my way around it, as I did with some of the other synths I've been Demoing. I just keep going back to Alchemy & Otmeal, no need to look at a manual or anything. I just find them so easy & intuitive to work with. In Alchemy you can import wavs & use as is in sample mode or tweak to hearts content with additive spectral & Granular options. Also the application of modulation is almost endless. I've revised my list in order of preference so far.

1) Alchemy
2) Oatmeal (its free!! & stands up well to synths over £100)
3) Zebra 2.5
4) Surge
5) Rhino
6) Sylenth
7) Synth1

well, the most obvious isn't neccessarily the easiest to use in the long run.

Once you get your head around Rhino's architecture its interface is fantastic. Some things take time to learn and master. I have been using Rhino for years now, and it took me a couple of days - spent with it and its (good) manual - to get familiar with it.

Camel Audio have just released Alchemy Player, a cut-down version of Alchemy that is intended for people who want to tweak presets rather than program completely new sounds. It costs $59/E49/£39 or is free with any Camel Soundbank.

I really like Alchemy too. It does help a lot that they have professionally produced videos describing how to use it available on their site and on YouTube. I really like the user interface of it too, and it can hardly be faulted on audio quality.

I've also owned Zebra for quite a while now, and I really like it. Its popularity was mentioned before, and it's a real plus that a softsynth is somewhat popular if you, like me, don't mind spending some cash buying professional patches. These things are usually very modestly priced, and the ones you get for Zebra are IMHO very high quality. There are some user-created videos describing how to work Zebra available on YouTube too, and again, they're very helpful and quite high quality, although not as uberprofessional as the Camel Audio-ones (which are some of the best instruction videos I've seen on any topic, really money well spent for Camel Audio).

u-he ACE was also mentioned, and I love that synth too. I wouldn't go as far as calling it an "all rounder", tho, but for what it is and what it does, it is really, really good.

I haven't really tested the other guys on your list of contenders, but I guess really just wanted to chime in and say good luck with your search, and given the number of excellent options available these days, I'm sure you'll find something that fills your needs.

Thanks for the heads up Hitch. I think I'd rather hold out until I can afford the full version. I actually enjoyed tweaking my own sound in Alchemy, especially adding my own samples. I got carried away with it today & lost all track of time

Yes jens I see what you mean & you definitely couldn't go wrong buying Rhino. But I know a few days or weeks down the road I'd be kicking myself for not buying Alchemy. There's just some thing you can do in Alchemy that the other synths I've tried cant do. I know I could probably have done with spending a bit more time learning the ins & outs of Rhino etc. But that's what I love about Alchemy, there's not much of a learning curve with it. I wasn't sitting scratching my head for a few hours wondering what to do.

I really just want to buy one decent synth if I can help it.
Though if I was to recommend a decent all-rounder for under £100, it would definitely be Rhino or Surge.

I still have to try Reaktor & Ace yet But its looking like Alchemy's gonna be the synth for me at the mo.

I must say Nexus is way overpriced for what it is. Not so keen on the sounds either. I must put my -1 there.

I'd rather go for U-he stuff, sounds so much better to my ears. And its price is fair. And Urs is a very cool guy to deal with. Can't say the same thing about reFX.

U-he's stuff rocks. I agree with you 100% on every good thing you said about the company, their products, and the man behind it all, Urs. In fact, I will give up my copy of Zebra when you pry it out of my cold dead hands (OK, maybe you will have to pry it off the hard drive you pry out of my cold dead hands). I am hoping to add ACE to my collection soon.

However, for a do all synth, I must still keep my vote for Nexus2. So, on this one point we must agree to disagree.

In fact, a do-it-all synth is very hard to describe. Nexus maybe has a lot of stuff in its vast expansion packs (which total to 1919$?! Are you fucking kidding me?!), but it's utterly nonflexible.

There are a lot of 3rd party soundbanks made for Zebra, and I'll say it's still much more value for money than Nexus will ever be. And, since it's semimodular, it's insanely flexible. So it also falls into do-it-all category.

I guess it boils down to flexibility vs. immediacy. I like both, but having it at once. One hinders the other, but I don't feel like that with Zebra. Or VAZ Modular. Or the FREE Elektrostudio Synth Pack. Etc.

I've been playing with Zebra & Alchemy lately, still loving the Alchemy. But I noticed I still Had WusikstationCM in my Synth folder & remembered receiving an email about getting version 5 for the upgrade price of around $80. So I downloaded the Demo & some presets, some really nice guitar & piano ones. I was impressed with what I heard plus the UI's pretty tidy. I'll probably still end up going for Alchemy but I just wanted to know how you guys rated Wusikstation?

Is it worth paying $80 for (if indeed I get it for that price) or should I just hold on to the cash & put it towards Alchemy or Zebra, when I can?

Free ones i love Oatmeal and Synth1 (they both have an huge amount of presets you can find all over the net)
Synthsquad,Zebra,Sylenth1 and Alchemy got my votes for commercial ones, i love also Audjoo Helix, but i find its interface a bit too cluttered for me
They all have demos, try em, they're awesome!

Oh, and for Zebra there are tons of extra presets/osc architecture/msegs, both in free (check U-he patchlib and kvr) and commercial world!

I've been having a hoot with Imposcar for a while now.

Genuine big retro sounds. It may be a little expensive though. I don't know your budget limitations. Well worth a look though.

Cheers.

probably way off base but something that covers allot of ground to me is KORE 2/NI. You don't need the controller, you can get the software version. The reason I mention it is that is does so much and comes with allot of great sounds. Kore packs can be pretty cool too to add on.

I'm guessing CPU is not that big an issue? (I've heard alchemy can be quite taxing)

Oh yeah, there is a free version to so that you can check it out: http://www.native-instruments.com/#/...r/kore-player/

Thanks for the link rossh, I'll check it out later. If its as much fun as you say it is €99 isn't expensive. I'm trying to keep in & around the £150 mark, no more than £200.

Thanks chrisharbin, I have Kontakt player. I've been meaning to download Kore. I'll get later.

I got an email back from Williamk saying WusikstationCM is ok for the upgrade price to v6. Has anyone any more opinions on Wusikstation before I buy. I'm trying to be picky & if I by Wusik, I'll still probably be getting Alchemy or Zebra, etc. (still not completely sure yet which one but Alchemy's still in the lead) I am on a budget so I cant just be buying every cool vsti I see.
I'm just trying to get a decent set of vst/vsti's for as little money as possible. I'm almost there after getting a good synth, GPO is next on the list for Orchestration, & then maybe a couple of decent reasonably priced FX.

To Wusikstation V6 or not, that is the question ??

I found Wusikstation to be one big mess. From downloading to updating to dealing with the website - total chaos, but this was a few years back. Maybe things have changed. It sounds great - but i'm just not into the huge GB synth packages, and find that many of them that sound great on their own, don't always "sit' well in mixes. My first choice for synths is Reason, but that's not in line with what the OP was looking for, so i would recommend some of the more basic ones (most free!). Most have been mentioned already, but my faves are:

1. Synth 1 (my fave all-around synth. Stable and adaptable)
2. Oatmeal (right up there with Synth 1 - good for more ambient stuff)
3. Mini Mogue (mini-moog emu that works nicely for prog rock stuff)
http://glenstegner.com/softsynths.html
4. Vanguard (great for techno/electronica, etc.)
http://refx.com/?lang=en&page=products/vanguard/summary

Almost forgot - the ElektroStudio package mentioned in an earlier post is a great all-around synth package. Make sure you check it out!

While Wusikstation is powerful, its installation could use a bit of polish. That being said, its support is great, so any difficulty you have with installation will be remedied quickly. WilliamK is one of the good guys.

What you can derive from this thread is that (a) there are a lot of good products out there and (b) everyone has their personal favorite (myself included).

My advice is take your time in making your selection; run the gambit of demos and pick the one that works for you. The important thing is not that you choose the synth I (or someone else) recommended; rather, the important thing is that you pick a synth that best fits your needs.

E-MU has a VST version of their Proteus synth available for free. It has a ton of sounds and would be a very cost effective way of getting some very usable synth sounds into your music if you aren't into programming synthesizers yourself.

i'm not into software synthesizers because i need knobs and stuff, but i've been impressed by the sounds they make.

some soft synths i've been impressed with

Omnisphere
Zebra
Sylenth
FM8 (only soft synth i own) the fs1r proved too elusive
Imposcar .. this thing sounds insane. awesome, awesome, awesome

Linplug Albinos 3 is extremely flexible as a general synth and Linplug Cronox 3 with the Sophistry sound bank will cover any ambient or just about anything you want in grounds.

Can be a little expensive as a one shot but you won't need anything else. Another option is Kontakt...you could by only this and be happy for life.

Just downloaded it. Its gotta really cool rough sound to it. Kinda reminds me of Massive.

I like it, but this is giving me the urge to start smoking again

Why did it take me this long to get around to downloading Kore player. You get a lot for nothing. I needed to get way from the synths for a while so I started new practice project in reaper. Hooked up the guitar, SSD EX and Kore with picked bass preset. The Bass sound was pretty good with Studio Devil's VBA on top of it. I was Riff'n in no time. Think I'll throw some Olga in the mix too

Well not so complete but with 9 oscilators and various filters Moog Modular is quite good and not so expensive.

At first it will look complicated but after reading the manual you willl find how to use it well, it has some very cool presets ( and the sequencer is very cool too)

I'll probably still end up going for Alchemy but I just wanted to know how you guys rated Wusikstation?

Is it worth paying $80 for (if indeed I get it for that price) or should I just hold on to the cash & put it towards Alchemy or Zebra, when I can?
At the moment V6 of Wusik is still in beta testing, and I have had to report oodles of problems with it. V5 is solid as a rock in Reaper and, as well as the excellent and varied prestes via the wusikpacks, you can create some amazing layered, textured sounds. In my opinion, it isn't the greatest for bass sounds, but for leads, pads, and morphing soudscapes it is fantastic. As another poster said, wait for another group buy and get it! The installation is a tad truncated but is definitely worth it; plus William K is a lovely fella and quick to repond to any enquiries or problems!!

I love what he is trying to do with V6 but at the moment it is a bit all over the place.

My 10 cents, for what it is worth.

Chris

ps +1 for the NI FM8. The most flexible and beautiful sounding soft synth I own (although FM synthesis can, initially, be a mind-fuck!)

it can have a very saturated rough sound but if you know which parameters saturate and back them off you can get some gorgeous thick and clean sounding tones.

most of the sounds in this track come from olga.

How do the SynthSquad synths compare?
I was infected with a need for a good software synth by this thread, and now I'm wondering...

yeah some really good sounds going on there & a pretty good cover too. I'm not really into florence & the machine. her voice gives me a headache.

thanks i'm not into florence and the machine at all - not a very good cover if you ask me. she sounds like she is shouting a football song most of the time. this is the far superior original (not sure if you were aware)

i've been playing around with dahornet today. i don't know how versatile it is yet, but it's definitely one of the better sounding soft synths that i've tried (especially for a freebie), and the presets are pretty sweet. wish i would have found this one long ago.

Default Modulars

I'm also interested to see what people think about these modulars:

http://www.blokmodular.com/
http://karmafx.net/index.html
http://www.syncmodular.com/download.html

How do they compare to the Zebra2, which is quite expensive, especially when VAT is added.

i spent a whole day with the blok demo recently. quite impressed - especially for the current price. the 'bloks' available to build your patch/synth are still quite limited but i believe more are going to be added. there was some kind of drawable envelope/lfo blok which was cool for evolving pads etc. very low cpu usage. one thing that pleased me was how intuitive it is to build patches - i was up and running in no time. i wasn't too impressed with it's overall sound though.

karmafx is a wonderful synth. limitless sound design capabilities although cpu usage can very quickly mount up with complex patches (especially with 8 or 16 note polyphony). really do like its sound - can be very 'chunky' sounding and, dare i say, fat (the most overused word in synth descriptions...). very popular amongst psy trance producers so i hear. has a multitude of different oscillator types including the gorgeous PADsynth algorithm from zynaddsubfx. a little more of a learning curve to build patches when compared to blok.

no experience with syncmodular although keep meaning to try it - i believe it was the forerunner to NI's reaktor.

sorry but i don't really know how they compare to zebra facility wise - not too much experience. i have downloaded the demo a few times but its sound doesn't do a lot for me so i haven't really persevered with it in any way.

BlokModular shows a lot of promise, and I think it will one day evolve into a power house. In its current state, it has a lot of powerful modules, but I think the workflow could use some polish and the arsenal of effects needs to be expanded, but for the asking price of 35 Euro, I would consider it a steal.

KarmaFX is awesome. Every module that comprises it is top-notch and Kasper updates it regularly. Of the three you list, it is my favorite and the one I find most useful.

SyncModular is crap. It is grainy and unsophisticated. It sounds lousy and is cumbersome to use. I wasted a week working with this thing because I thought that surely no one would make something this bad without hanging the alpha tag on it. I was wrong; it is garbage. Another annoying thing is that everytime it is scanned by a host, it pops up a splash screen that more oft than not just hangs there. I have tried it on 8 systems with a variety of hosts, and it seems to be a regular occurrence.

So, you can't go wrong with the first 2, avoid the 3rd at all costs, but recognize that none of them sound as good as Zebra. Zebra is under-prices when you consider the quality amd versatility of the product.

However, if you don't have the coin to cover the asking price, the whole under-priced thing really doesn't matter.
