Default VU reading greater than O dbFS on imported tracks from CD??

why does the channel VU indicate greater than 0dB when i import a commercially mastered CD track? It is completely dry, no FX, channel volume at 0. Mosr cd's are mastered around -0.3 or so, yet i am getting +4 and greater

thanks!

Pat

Did you set your meters where 0 is absolute? It does not default to that.

no i did not do that - but if i did, would that prevent me from seeing clipping and would no longer register anything grater than 0?

i came over from cubase, 32 bit float, and it was a acceptable to record hot tracks at about +6dB, which resulted in a good RMS of around -11 or so

it it the same idea here?

The _peak_ meters should display 0dBFS as 0dBFS.

OP: Are those straight pcm files from the CD or lossy files?
Are you using 44.1kHz sampling rate in the project, that is do the files maybe get samplerate converted?
For MP3's this is totally normal, because they are not meant to be accurate anyway.
In case resampling is involved overs can also occur.
