Default Increase volume of right side only?

I'm working with a recording I brought over to Reaper from an old cassette. It is a stereo track, but the left and right channels are on one item - not independent of each other.

The problem is the right channel volume is lower, which buries guitar leads and other parts a little too much. I need to bring them up again.

Is this possible?

lots of different ways to do this, i find the quickest way for me is to duplicate the track and then adjust the item properties (f2) "channel mode" so that one is left and the other is right. Then i can pan them & adjust the volume accordingly

Edit - though if it was just a simple volume adjustment i'd probably just pan the track to the right

Yep, that's the quickest easiest way in default Pan Mode (Stereo Balance). Technically this will attenuate the left side, but then you just turn the whole thing up.

Okay, so I duplicate the track, and now I have two tracks that each have L&R audio.
Go into Item Properties and change the Channel Mode for track 1 to Left, and track 2 to Right.
So now, on each track the Left & Right audio waves are merged into a single wave, which contain all the audio that was there as a stereo wave.

This leaves me with two tracks that each have a single audio wave.
I pan one hard left, and the other one hard right.

Since they both still contain the L&R audio of the stereo wave, complete with the original volume imbalance, I fail to understand how that provides the separation I need to increase the volume of only the right side.

If you change the mode to left it won't have the left and right merged to one - it will only have the information from the left side of the original track. So you then just turn it down.

The other suggestion of just panning to the right on the original track is a much easier way to do it though.

No reason to duplicate, select the item then press F2 and change the panning of the actual item and click apply. It's kind of bassakwards to be panning the actual track or creating additional tracks just to fix a problem that lives in the item.... Unless you need some other control of the items as completely separate tracks.

I was actually just doing this exact thing because I just recorded a stereo acoustic guitar track and the record level on the right channel was a tad low.

i agree (hence my edit) - but if you need to apply automation or detailed adjustments on a per side basis this is my usual method

Gotcha, if it's just a "mistake" in the levels of the stereo track, I usually fix it at the item level but there are always other circumstances that could change that.

Another option:
Try this

Add two new tracks (say, named L and R).

Create a send (pre fader) from your stereo track to L. channel 1 only

Create a send (pre fader) from the stereo track to R, channel 2 only.

Turn fader on original down all the way and play, adjusting volume of L and R tracks to suit.

It's a bit long-winded, but if you want to makes it easy to tweak each track individually, perhaps with envelopes, EQ or compression, etc.

For me, the easiest way to do it if I also want to process each side separately in other ways is to right click it -> item processing -> explode multichannel audio.

Just need to apply some EQ and compression sometime today, and I'll post it. I have quite a few cassette recordings of original songs I recorded back in the 80s & 90s. They've all been converted to .wav files, and now begins the task of cleaning them up and making them sound good. Reaper to the rescue!

There are simple plugins that allow adjustment of L and R gain separately

That's a great attempt at one-offing a country tune, well done - and I hate country music.

Nice one man, good job! Thanks for uploading it.

It's pretty cool hearing it from a cassette that's survived through.

Recorded a year before I ever picked up a guitar!

I don't hate it, but I do avoid it unless necessary (like being a Country act for almost ten years because the money was good).

Glad you like it. I keep experimenting and tweaking it to see what else I can do to make it better. My wife tells me to leave it alone, it already sounds good. lol
But it does need to be louder overall, which I'll do for the final master. In the meantime, I just know there's some EQ'ing to be done. And compression. And... and... and...
