Woo!

That just auto-woke me from suspended animation. Time to dust-off and fire-up REAPER again...

Copuld someone explain in simple words: what the heck is ARA anyway? And would it help a midi and notation based guy like me?

The main use case is for audio processing. It allows plugins like Melodyne to quickly analyze the audio from the track/media item. If ARA isn't available, the audio needs to be played manually into the plugin in realtime, which can be very time consuming and annoying to do.

No, it won't help you anyway.
http://www.celemony.com/en/service1/...es?checkLang=1
"ARA allows a DAW and plug-in to exchange information about the audio file, tempo, pitch, rhythm and much else besides and thereby work considerably more closely together. The plug-in is closer to what’s going on in the DAW and therefore runs more smoothly and efficiently. The DAW, for its part, can integrate the plug-in far more fully and make more targeted use of it – as though the plug-in were part of the DAW."

Thank you Xen and Vit. I can see it might be helpful. I do use plugins, so why not?

Would it help VSTi as well as VST and other plugs?

It works with plugins that implement it. (There are very few of them, can be counted with the fingers of one hand.) Existing VST etc plugins without ARA capabilities are not affected. I don't see many use cases for instrument plugins, but who knows if there could be some.

I'll just leave this here, cough:

and, for no particular reason, here's a REAPER logo formatted exactly like the logos on that page, just in case anyone might want it for some reason or other...

Now you know what Cockos is all about.

Just so you understand what I'm mean: I bought 5.0 about 2 years ago. Since then, her's what they've added, from the top of my head:

- a notation editor
- a lot of improvements to the MIDI editor (still not perfect, but very usable now, compared to what it used to be)
- sub projects (the ability to include projects in a project)
- super powerful automation items, on par with the best out there
- half a dozen new audio stretching algorithms
- stretch markers to edit stretching manually
- non destructive spectral edition
- remote control via HTTP
- and now ARA

... and countless bug fixes and smaller features.
Yet the current version is 5.62, - the latest the greatest -, these are not even considered a MAJOR update. Meanwhile the community has added dozens of pro looking themes, SWS extensions, scripts, the Reapack packaging manager, hundreds of in depth tutorial videos and a great user manual.

ALL FOR FREE !

You get now why the Reaper users are the happiest users ?

Welcome aboard !

After a few years away from Reaper, trying to make Sonar work for me, I moved back to Reaper earlier this year. Only thing missing, for me, was ARA. So, Yay!!!

Anyhow, for those who aren't tracking this, or aren't familiar with Melodyne -- there's a rather nice BF discount for upgrades running on multiple sites. Much cheaper than can be found on Celemony's site. Here's one:

https://plugindiscounts.com/brand/celemony/

If you must have tempo editing, the upgrade from Essential to Editor is only $133, for instance. No multi-tracking, of course, but very few people will actually need this, rather than just wanting it.

If you own fairly recent versions of other DAWS, you probably have an included license for Essential. Off the top of my head, that includes at least Sonar, Studio One, and Waveform. Probably all the others in Celemony's compatibility list. Otherwise, you may still be able to buy a license for Essential for $49 on one of the discount sites, though I think that's deal's over. For now.

And -- if you have a friend who owns multiple DAWS, they likely have multiple Essential licenses. To the best of my knowledge, these are not linked, and can be transferred. Not trying to sabotage Celemony's marketing, or trigger a tsunami of begging for free licenses, but there are marketplaces at KVR and Gearslutz, among others.

Studio one actually handles that great (pretty much the only thing it handles great is melodyne to be honest)

And the beatmapping stuff for using tempo maps.

Exciting stuff by the way

My experience with ARA audio to MIDI in Melodyne in both Studio One and Samplitude shows that the conversion doesn't recognise the note off of the audio so you end up with a bunch of midi notes without the correct duration of the audio. Anyone else noticed this?
