I would suggest perhaps, that a dedicated "Stems" folder could exist relative to the "Bounces/Render" folder. If you bounce stems before a mix, then both folders would obviously need to be created relative to your project directory.
What do people think of this?

I would like to see the settings page under General->Paths to simply allow you to you enter relative or fixed directories for any of the types including but not limited to, midi, exports, general audio media, rpp, reapeaks, rpp-bak, rpp-bak-undo, bounces, video, etc.
Relative to the project home directory entries would appear like:
.\Bak
.\Undo
.\Video
.\Audio
.\Export
.\Midi
.\Bounces
..\..\Rendered Mixes
Fixed directory entries would have a full qualified path:
C:\My Files\Midi
Relative to the project home drive
\My Files\Bounces
\Latest Album\Export
These should all be named as you want them to be named. If no entry is given the default would be as it is now with files appearing in the project home directory.
This would be a very welcomed cleanup.
As originally suggested, the directories should be created automatically by Reaper as needed.

This sounds great (add reapeaks to that), i think that these names should be in there by default and have an additional tick box for "use below paths" that can be unticked to have it all not foldered.

Just noticed yesterday relative backup-folders aren't working. So without reading the entire thread:

+1 to this, if I have to agree with people on this thread at all (rather than saying that at least 3 posts on this thread are garbage, and sounding like a grouch)
I'm also doing a shitload of recording lately, and personally usually I want all my reapeaks and renders and imported media in the same directory. When looking at the contents of the folder in windows XP I just sort by file type, (View>Arrange Icons by> Type) it's great.
LATER I may spawn new projects, into a NEW folder, copying all media, and then do a 'clean project directory' to ditch any redundant media. Thus the music can grow organically. The closure is when a deprecated project folder gets archived, there is no dead wood on your disk but the refined idea lives on in a new folder. (and the archive could still be revisited, to make another new branch)
OK, enough with the gardening lecture -
The problem is just this - when shit is in a folder you have to open the bastard before you can see what's there, and it's THAT that I don't like!!

So, just to get this straight what's being proposed is something like this?
C:\Projects\whatever\
C:\Projects\whatever\undos\
C:\Projects\whatever\bak\
C:\Projects\whatever\peaks\
C:\Projects\new tune\
C:\Projects\new tune\undos\
C:\Projects\new tune\bak\
C:\Projects\new tune\peaks\
etc...or is ONE folder for ALL peaks being suggested?
because that could end up being a disaster.
I'll definitely vote for sub folders inside EACH Project folder

Relative and fixed pathing, you show fixed pathing there, which may or may not be desirable for a given project, but it should be up to you. That kind of flexibility can be built in.
The implementation that I and many are asking for is for relative pathing (referenced to the project home directory) to be available if entered that way, but fixed pathing as you've shown should remain possible. That was in one of my posts above.
\my songs\exported\
would be a relative path, but fixed to the drive the project is in.
.\peaks\
would be relative to the project home directory with "peaks" being a subdirectory of the project directory, and could be named "peak files" or "my peaks" or "peaky" or "my peaky moments" if you wanted.
C:\my songs\exports\
would be an absolute fixed path regardless of the project home directory location.
Fixed and relative pathing can be a bit confusing initially, but once you get a hold of it, it is a powerful and convenient concept.

I would like to be able to specify a 'documentation' path.
Currently. when you put a pdf in Reaper's root, it will show up in the Help-Documentation menu.
This is useful. So useful in fact that I've dropped pdf docs for a number of plugins that I use in that folder.
Would be nice to put them in a separate (sub)folder and still be accessible from within Reaper.

Likewise, my drives are a complete mess. An "Auto Clean-Corral Project Tidier" feature for me would:
1) First corral a list of *all* project files on a drive.
2) Corral a list of all associated files per project.
3) On command, tidy the whole mess up by consolidating them all into a directory based on their associated project's name.
4) What's left over, strays and peak files, would then be deposited in a separate folder for "hard drive recycling".
I bet I'm not the only person that would benefit greatly from this. I'm OCD inwardly, not extroverted - while my hard drive is a mess, I despise and hate that it is so unorganized.
It would actually be a psychiatric benefit having such a utility, knowing that afterwards everything would be all nice and neat in their respective directories and I could safely dispose of the rest. I mean, am I the only person who, every time they look in their temp directory they notice some Reaper files, or "oh, there's some in my root directory, uhg", or "oops, resaved that project in a subdirectory of this other project" on and on... uhg, hate thinking about it.
/ I can understand the popularity of the Tao of Apple in hiding all of that, but *I* know it's still there. Uhg.

Marah, you can also put PDFs in a "Docs" folder inside the REAPER root.

Related to this, at least indirectly (not sure if it's been mentioned above or elsewhere)...
When you do a render, and have it save a copy of the project file in the same folder as the render, and that folder differs from the project folder (which it easily can, eg when rendering to a 'mix' folder), the rpp doesn't include absolute paths to its media. Perhaps it should, or at least be an option?

I read somewhere about using some kind of %TAG% sytax for defining paths... anyone know about this? Can't seem to find it documented.
Also a HUGE +1 to all suggestions in this thread.
Not sure if this has been suggested, but...
If we could also define relative paths per track (so like, a subfolder for bass, guitar, drums, vox, etc...) that would be an added bonus. I like to keep thing organized.

It's on the elevated list, so it's only a matter of time, but you should still vote.

I have confidence that the devs know how important project management is, including paths and file naming... the recent upgrade to the render dialog shows that... so I'm sure that when they get to this, it will be a smart implementation.

Path customization.
It becomes even more interesting when you factor in portability, and then combine that with use over a local network or with a service like Dropbox.
Reaper has all those lovely ini files sitting in its root. Their functional granularity makes them candidates for selective sharing across installations. They practically beg for a good path customization scheme.
If it was easy and transparent, I'd share my KeyMaps or MenuSets or templates folders across my lappy & desktop.
Reaper being such a small and self-contained installation brings these issues into relief.
