Q: Using the web interface PC to Android without a router ?
Hi
Imagine you are in a place without internet.
Ni LAN router, no internet mobile access.
Just a PC (with WIFI but no internet access) an Android device.
Is it possible to connect to the REAPER Web Interface in this situation ?
Or is a LAN router absolutely needed ?
I searched various concept (hotspot, widi direct, adhoc connection), but I don't get successful results (though, I'm not expert in this field).
Has anyone done that ?
I assume Bluetooth cannot work.
Thanks !
(PS: it is not an urgent problem at all, I'm just curious).

i set this up on a win10 box by setting up a hotspot ( think i called it chicksdigwifi in fact - high humour.. ) - then android tab connect to that and the reaper web interface/ or vnc.
haven't fired it up in while as busy getting new space up and running but think i followed some online instructions on setting a hotspot on win 10, using a cmd line batch file on startup.
easy for you i'd say!
if curious i'll boot it up to remind myself what i did...

You don't need router or a hotspot on your pc. Just connect to the reaper site direct from cell phone.

@BenK-msx
It seems that HotSpot does require a internet connection... In my case, it would be a place with no access.
Did you manage to do that without online access ?

pretty sure i did - some brain rattling later and it could be an ad-hoc network, set up by command line, i remember that much.. i'll get back to you, likely morro - way past bedtime now
edit: lucky fella - i'd bookmarked the web page and typing 'adhoc' into chrome brought it up - google remembers all..

No, a hotspot is turning your computer into a wireless access point. You'd only need internet if you wanted the device connecting to your computer to have internet access through that hotspot which is what it is usually used for (it's really the desktop version of tethering a laptop to your iPhone). I haven't set this up in forever so I'd need to check to see if you need to manually assign an IP etc. or if it can use APIPA etc. My immediate guess is APIPA would work since that is precisely what it exists for. If you have ever seen this weird IP that starts with 169. when you can't get internet access or something - that was provided by APIPA.

I tested but it seems that this method also require internet connection (Step 2 of the tutorial).
I tried the other way around (the phone as HotSpot) but it didn't work either.
I'm afraid it is not possible without a router or online access :S

Like I said, it assumes you want the device to get to the internet so all the wording is written as "internet connection" but that's actually "network interface". I wouldn't be surprised if the assumption that the user wants to connect to the internet complicates things but the idea of a hotspot is to make the computer an access point.
What matters more is whether it allows access to the host machine itself which I can't test right now - maybe I can this evening when I get home. The only problem I can think if is that if the wizard won't complete unless the machine can get an IP from a router - if that happens then manual setup is the only way.

Does work, and am sure I followed that tutorial. No internet needed.
Persist!
