The old MIDItech driver seemingly doesn't like Reaper.

The only reported (and similar) issue with the Midistart 2 is here:
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=15477

This post in the aforementioned thread contains a possible solution:

I confirm that Midistart 2 issue (reaper freezes), I also confirm the workaround through midi-ox. Ok, it's clear that this is a cheap USB keyboard => As mine now RIPs in its box and as I have enough available space I can try to upload too...
Cockos are your interested ?
... I'm joking but what midi-ox can do that reaper can't ? A real bug IMO.

I'd say it's just a crappy, cheap and not very widespread product mostly sold in Europe. Pretty much all less simplistic cheapo keyboards are "class compliant" and don't need a driver at all and it seems that MIDItech saw the problems with the driver and made the latest versions of the Midistart 2 class compliant (can be recognized by a round sticker).

I may be a bit biased though - my first MIDI controller was a MIDItech and it sucked and literally started losing its teeth after 2 years - all keys in an octave were one part and there was no hinge mechanism or something, they were all moored by a thin plastic strip which was under constant torsion and finally broke when you played on that thing. After repairing a few keys with (more solid) duct tape I gave up.

Yeah.. confirmed + totally bugged (whatever is the host): sometimes, it just says "0". Dead.
=> 2masseev, be cool on the wheels..

I just had a look on the box, I understand now: it's written "Made in Germany" on it

ha ha! Confirmed as well. But hey! you should have kept it, Steindork. A must have for you: it would have perfectly suit your incredible studio you've shown in the lounge...
