I have a question regarding your optimization
so i downloaded everything, then installed, and everything works fine. I have two monitors plugged into my computer and i was wondering if you disabled that feature in your optimization. because the way i would normally set up two monitors does not seem to be possible when im in display properties. and when i change the resolution from 800 by 600 pixels to 1280 by 1024 my left screen goes all nuts and says "input signal out of range" the middle setting. i know im asking questions for something that was done by you years ago but if you could help that would be great. thanks!

I've run DuX' XP with two monitors, and it works. I think you need to install drivers specific for your monitors. The stock drivers supplied by MS doesn't always work well enough, and DuX stripped out a massive amount of drivers from the install just to keep the size down. Just google your the make and model of your monitor...

In the display settings, click the 'Advanced' button, then the 'Monitor' tab and make sure that the refresh rate is set to 60.
Most LCD monitors don't like higher settings like the CRT monitors did.

when i go to the advance settings the only option for the refresh rate of the monitor is "use hardware default setting." I actually use two different monitors one is a newer model(new school Monitor) and the other is an older one that is bulkier (old School Monitor) i dont think the fact they are both different will affect if i can or not but should i just try to find driveres for each of my monitors? both of my monitors are on and are working they just are not configured for two and im not finding any drivers out there for these monitors: IBM 6734-ABO or IBM 6332-4HN

thanks! one question that i have that can probably be answered easily is, how do i get on the internet? as of now im going back and forth between my laptop and my desktop trying to install these drivers. thanks!
and the driver link you sent for the 6734-ABO gave me three files they are .cat .icm .inf im guessing i put these somewhere but i dont know where. the other one (e74) has a driver updater in it but i dont think that is for the monitor driver. it has an .icm and a .inf in it and then a bunch of html files. im used to installing what i need with a click when it comes to drivers. any help would be great thanks

Ive got two monitors set up
i finally got the two monitors working. i believe that there were 17 processes running and now there is 18. since the 3dP chip did not install my radeon drivers i used a different driver updater and only ran the one for the radeon display. im probably going to uninstall the updater soon. i am now even able to have my screen resolution higher than when i first installed. i hope what i did wont change the optimization that dux did because before i figured out how to set up the two monitors with my given circumstances, i was listening to some audio and i heard no clicks or pops what so ever. and i am used to hearing them. this is awesome!

Great that you got it working (and that I was right about the drivers being the problem ) No, installing those drivers won't ruin anything (assuming they are not badly written). They just replace the software layer in-between your XP and your monitors, that was previously handled by Microsofts stock drivers. So everything should work just fine...

im hearing a few pops and clicks i heard more when my resolution was up all the way now its at 1024 by 768.. what pixel ratio do you all use? what could be the cause of these clicks?
im using foobar2000 for a media player it seems lighter then the windows media player on the c drive. my computer stays at zero than for a little will bumb up to seven or eight and stay there for about a thumbs length and with in the rising and falling is where the clicks and pops come.

You all probably think I've died or something... Hardly, as I'm vegan and full of energy!
I'm actually more alive and well than before and baking a treat for you: a WinXP 32-bit with all the latest patches and probably the last patches ever for it from MS and - WinXP x64 nLited my way.
last year was a year of 64-bit software and it continues on... Lots of our favourite software has *finally* become available in 64-bit format so I don't see any reasons to withhold from it anymore. However, an XP x64 system is definitely working more smoothly in my research in comparison to Win7 64-bit. Windows XP x64 is based upon [or the other way round?] Windows 2003 XP server and it's stable and solid as a rock, I love it. Not as stable as Linux but... hmmm anyway, It looks the same, it acts the same as "normal" XP, but you can put as much memory you like in your rig and it accepts it and works really well.
So be ready for nLited WinXP *x64* along with the still kinda normal x386 - 32-bit nLited version. It'll be the same as this one available at the first post, but MS patched to the latest security/critical patch. In my view it's not much different and I don't recommend reinstalling your WinXP rig - it's not worth it. Use Firefox or Chrome and keep doing music instead. d=
btw. all the 32-bit software will still work in x64, but not at 100% speed, more like 99.5%?... but it's no reason for any concern. I think it's time to move on... not to Win7 though. [and don't even mention Vista please...]
However, if you don't miss more memory than 2GB, just keep using XP 32-bit. There's no use in upgrading just for the sake of upgrading, actually 32-bit programs work worse than in 32-bit XP, so think about it. If you think you could use more memory then x64 nLited is for you.
Cheers!

I nlitened my xp64 sp2 with your 32bit ini and used seraphs post sp2 update. I was helpped by kurt Aust at planet AMD 64 and others at MSFN\nLite. On one of My rigs, I have it loaded on an SSD.
It rocks, way faster than any OS I've ever seen or used.
I'm going to do my 32 bit OS and run it off an external to use for internet access and run Webroot Security (it doesn't work on 64 bit)
Thanks for the ini it worked great.
DUX, have you made an OEM image yet?
Oh, over at MSFN\nLite there’s a sticky that shows you how to set up install so you can load the AHCI drivers with out running a flopy. Fernando was really helpful.

I am absolutely thrilled to hear about this.
I have been wrestling with the idea of moving to Windows 7 for the RAM but I will definitely hold out for a DuX x64, instead.
Perfect timing, sir and I am looking forward to the release.

That's good to hear!
The only time I used Windows to work with audio on the last 10 years, I used your nLite XP!
Congrats!

I have not done the usb key install, but as for the drivers... DuX has stripped out most of them but the absolute minimum, so yes, you need to install specific drivers for your chipset and video etc... I think you should always do that anyway, upgrade to the latest drivers after a clean install.

Hi Dux,
Long time XP AO user here. I have to say that this is the fastest OS I ever installed... been using it since it came out (3 years ago?) on the Studio PC without internet connection and it NEVER crashed. Simply unbelivable.
Now I'm building a new PC for the home TV and just installed the last version you posted... but I have a little problem, and dunnow if it's directly related to the OS:
- wifi: it reaches and tries to connect to my router, but it always fails at getting an IP address. I have DHCP enabled on the router, and it seems that the needed services are running on the PC. Am I loosing something?
- bluetooth: it detects the blutooth device, and I have that blue symbol on the taskbar, but I can't transfer files. Are there any extra packets I need to install for the bluetooth DTS file transfer to work?
Many thanks for your work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't seen DuX around here in a long time. I see him on Facebook now and then though...
I have no real solution to your problem, except that I got wi-fi functional under DuX v2 XP on my laptop. I have reserved an IP-address in the router for that one (as for everything that connects to my router).
It should work, I guess that's what I want to say. You are probably not missing anything, but try to reserve an IP-address in the router. Just maybe...
EDIT: You don't have MAC-filtering turned on, do you? Just a thought...

This Windows XP SP3 AO looks great!
I'm going to give it a shot when I get some free time.
I have one questions about it.
Let's say you have the following drives on your system:
c:,d:,e:,f:
When you create your install CD and install after booting up, will it install to c: or will it reformat your entire hard drive and create one c: ?
TIA

Your partitions will stay in place unless you delete them during the formatting part of the windows install.

I have one more question about this WinXP OA .iso
How do you take this file and make a bootable CD to install XP?
No one here seems to mention this. My Nero and ImgBurn apps aren't doing it for me with just the .iso.
TIA

Are you selecting the option in your burning software to burn an image to disc?

Well now I've got my WinXP-AO installed and running for a week or so and it's much faster than my previous full installation.
I am having a few problems though and wonder if anyone here might be able to help.
The main one is my Start menu is messed up.
If I click on Start (I'm using the 'Start Menu', not the 'Classic Start Menu')
the left side is blank. No programs ever show up there. That's the spot where your most recent programs should show up. You can set it to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc..
No matter what I set it, no programs ever show there.
I also can't pin apps to the top of that spot.
Anyone know how to fix these?
Really weird, but all my other XP installs had a c:\Documents and Settings\ folder. This one doesn't. It has a c:\Users instead.
TIA

In an effort to get my Start Menu working properly I searched online for help.
One site suggested I run sfc /scannow: from the cmd line.
When I tried I got the following error:
"Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable.]"
More online research suggested I edit regedit
to the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon
SFCDisable and set its Value data to 0.
I was now able to run sfc /scannow:
I ran it and got the following:
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.
Insert your Windows XP Pro CD-ROM now. After that the message changed to:
Insert your Windows XP Pro SP3 CD now."
I didn't have an XP Pro SP3 CD so I got:
"You chose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may affect Windows stability.
Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized versions? Y/N?"
I chose Yes and it kept throwing back the first message "Files that are required for Windows to run ......".. Then the 2nd msg. then the 1st etc. etc. over and over. Finally it got out of the loop.
So my Start Menu still doesn't work properly.
I've never run n-Lite setup but apparently there is a ton of stuff that you can customize there. It seems that something wasn't set up that allows the Start Menu from displaying properly.
To narrow this down, let me ask you folks this:
Those that are using this DAWUser n-lite setup, if you set your Start Menu to regular (not Classic Start Menu) and you click Start, do you see a list of previously loaded apps in the left column or is it completely blank?
TIA

You have to realize that DuX' XP is a very stripped down version of XP. One could argue that it is not XP at all, but another OS that simply tries very hard to mimick XP. IE refuses to install, for instance...
If you want to have the snappy DuXP don't try to use it as XP, do not install updates (if you're not very sure about what you do).
I am not sure, but I guess that what you want has been stripped away, because DuX deemed it unnecessary and only using space and/or CPU cycles. It's not a deficiency, it is a feature...

Thanks Fabian. Yes I understand that this is a very bare bones version of XP, and its intent is for a very specific use.
But I now have two installations of it on my PC, one strictly for music and the other for everyday use.
It's the 'everyday use' one that I'm mostly concerned about.
My previous XP installation (Media Center Edition) took up more than 8 Gigs and was much slower than this WinXP-AO version.
I can live with many cut out features and could work around this annoyance, but wonder if it is possible to get it working again.
However, instead of wasting a lot of time trying to fix something that is impossible to fix, I'd still like to know the following:
Those that are using this DAWUser n-lite setup, if you set your Start Menu to regular (not Classic Start Menu) and you click Start, do you see a list of previously loaded apps in the left column or is it completely blank?
