how to export to multichannel file ?
say I have four tracks of 'normal' Audio (that is not multi-channel, playing on channel 1+2), what would be the steps to export this as a 8 channel (4 x2) multichannel file ?
Is it possible with Reaper ?

"Wild guess ahead warning!"
I think you need to route the audio to the channels you want them to be rendered on, otherwise Reaper can't know which audio is supposed to live on which channel.
You can do that for example on a (8 channel) helper track, by sending your tracks to it and change audio channels on the way through the sends (track 1 sends audio 1/2 to 1/2, track 2 sends 1/2 to 3/4 and so on). Then check "Multichannel tracks to multichannel files" in the render dialog and render the helper track.
There might be simpler ways, but they all most probably have in common that your audio must somewhere be routed to the desired channels.

edit:
I have no idea what I did wrong the first time, but trying again it now worked without problems using the above method. Here's the 8-chan file I just created. Thanks again gofer.

In render dialog set Render to "Stems (selected track)" instead of "Master mix". I just tried and it works here. (The helper track needs to be selected, obviously.)
Edit: I see you're sorted already - nice .

why "Master mix" can't render multichannel?
At the same time, after rendering, we have the number of channels that is specified in the settings, but they are empty, except for 1-2)
But routing is ok (freeze, stem rendering).
only when rendering "Master mix"
WHY?

The simplest way is to use the master track with 8 channels and send each track to its parent (the master track) with an offset like : track 1 to 1-2, track 2 to 3-4 etc.
Then render the mix as usual but specifiy that it must be 8 channels.
There is generally no need to create more tracks and use sends...

To put a finer point on it:
In the track 1/2, there’s a drop down where you can choose the channels to which this track will pass it’s output to its parent. Just change that and it works fine.

Hi all,
in my REAPER (Evaluation License) there is no possibility to check "Multichannel tracks to multichannel files" in the render dialog.
Do you kown how?
Regards,
Fulvio.
