The WASAPI audio stream is very useful, except that it has to buss all the sounds together, so it applies a compressor that seems to be built in and not overruled. Hence, you will not have the raw sound, but a coloured, compressed sound. Which may be nice, but if your doing serious recording, its obviously not desirable. I'm not sure if this compressor is the same as the old 'enhancement' feature that could be bypassed. So, beware, you will be in for a suprise once you have mixed and listen back through a different driver or system.
If anyone knows how to bypass the compressor in WASAPI it would be nice to know. I have read that windows have 7 audio settings for driver manufacturers, and one of them is 'raw' input (others are speaking, theatre, etc..).
Any other details on routing and the feedback loop in WASAPI is welcome. ie, how is the audio feeding back in from Reaper (an unpleasant feedback loop).
