Default Windows WASAPI loopback record (DONE)

I recently noticed the Audacity audio editor has added a feature to record "what you hear" when using Windows WASAPI as the sound system. It'd be great if Reaper could have this too, to make it easier to record audio that is playing on the system.

To get the Cockos devs started :

I second this. To be able to record "what you hear" is crucial.

I could probably find a few uses for this.

Yeah this would be cool for sampling stuff from videos, games etc. It's quite easy to do on Mac with Soundflower, but quite more complicated on Windows. +1 for an easy option for Reaper users.

I too would find this useful for example vids and sounds for client examples.

Be amazing if reaper could keep using Asio but still record wave audio as a special type of input.

The WASAPI audio stream is very useful, except that it has to buss all the sounds together, so it applies a compressor that seems to be built in and not overruled. Hence, you will not have the raw sound, but a coloured, compressed sound. Which may be nice, but if your doing serious recording, its obviously not desirable. I'm not sure if this compressor is the same as the old 'enhancement' feature that could be bypassed. So, beware, you will be in for a suprise once you have mixed and listen back through a different driver or system.

If anyone knows how to bypass the compressor in WASAPI it would be nice to know. I have read that windows have 7 audio settings for driver manufacturers, and one of them is 'raw' input (others are speaking, theatre, etc..).

Any other details on routing and the feedback loop in WASAPI is welcome. ie, how is the audio feeding back in from Reaper (an unpleasant feedback loop).

I use this wasapi with loopback and dial back the volume in windows mixer. Maybe there is compression but if has low impact with low volumes

Is this what you want?

Options->Preferences->Audio->Device->Audio System->WasApi ...

Then select "Mode" to "Shared Loopback"
