Oooh, this has the potential to sound pretty good, it has the performance from both of you guys to be much better. The guitar is played very well and in all honesty I think all the instruments are played well enough to make it a much better mix.

That's my thoughts.

Thanks Mark. Morgon sent me his track like weeks ago, but with a new job and the holidays, I never got around to putting it together until after TG. Hope Morg hasn't forgotten!

It certainly can. That was me trying to be trashy...and seems like I succeeded!
I've already planned to go back to my normal ways and remix it. Thank you Tod.

Unexpected organ out of nowhere!

Love the fat, filthy, overdriven vibe the entire thing has. Positively thundering piece.

Industrial punk?
Liked the drums or what it was
I would prefer less 'doubling' of the vocals, kinda too soft compared to the rest.
But regardless.... REALLY GOOD!!!

Hey Zee. I had this old free Kontakt library called "Tube Organ" that's been sitting sitting around forever. Thought I'd finally put it to use and pulled out my ancient Oxy8 keyboard and played some simple lines. Thank goodness for quantizing.

LOL! Yeah, they got smashed a bit. Kinda fun.
Actually, I have a version with just the single vocs, but I thought I needed to sing a second set to cut thru. Looks like it didn't work good enough.

I was just beginning to wonder if all was well, but I know you've very often got collabs in the works and they take time. I thought I'd finished an album six weeks ago and I'm still tweaking it.

I tend to agree with Zeekats appraisal here, but I certainly respect Tods opinion on anything, he's a bit older than us though haha

Sorry guy. Had a rare moment of focusing on life. I try not to do that too much. But now the turkey has settled and the new position also, so back to my normal spacey self. haha.

The thing with mixing is that you have to try to fit the personality of the song. Trashy can be cool as hell as well as a nice, coherent mix. A good balance is the best, I think.

...and you do know you MADE this song, right?

Just about all my tracks have had crunch dialled in, some more so than this track, some less, it's a sound I'm well accustomed to, over the years I'd estimate I've used something that could be called a clean gtr tone prolly less than 5% of the time, never been without distortion/overdrive pedals since I was 15 y.o. So it's no hard sell to me, more like preaching to the converted ha, this is a better version than the first, the keys and vocals, more dynamic, good job.

And it paid off.

The version I sent you was just my basic tracks. Hardly any mixing at all except a few filters so it wouldn't be total mush. And the vocals you heard were a scrapped trial version. I re-sang everything.

It's a good tune, congrats. Smashed would work better if the low end weren't so bold/defined and loud (vs more puffy and softer sub lows), the low end being so low and hard edged for lack of a better term, kinds of works against the idea IMHO + it's a little much low end for most mixes YMMV. Also for that trashy sound, I'd be tempted to narrow or even mono the drums at least in some spots.

Thanks Karbo. I hear it and completely agree. Added to my project notes for the remix. This is one I think I'll actually re-post when done, so collecting info.

I thought I'd learn how to play keyboards after buying one. Odd thing, I still can't yet it's a hugely useful thing and use it all the time.

Mix is great and there's nothing to fix, love the fuzzy sound, it's really hairy in a best way. Makes my imaginary VU meters swing right into the red, compliments for all involved.

For me, it's just like trying to play lead guitar: as long as it's not too complex, I can bang out something. I usually think of what I want to play in my head first, then physically copy my thoughts, so to speak. If it has to be spontaneous, forget it.

Just like any mix, there are things that bug me after the fact. That heavy low end Karbo mentioned is the the number one main thing. Still, I think it'll lose some "excitement" if I cleaned it up too much. I also think my guitars can come up some.

Thanks Hugo. Just another mixing experiment. If I don't try new stuff, I'll fall into a coma.

Just had another listen. This is a great tune. You captured a great feeling with that mix Sam. I want to mention how much i like the guitar at the very beginning. Great tone..feeling. Do you mind sharing what kind of processing you did to your voice to get that dirty vibe? You nailed it.. I can never seem to get that 100% when i'm going for this kind of thing.

*Edit: Also - I hope you're keeping everything you've worked on in the past several years somewhere. Like a "Sam Library of Music". You really should if you haven't. There has really been some special stuff...

Thanks Mark. I have a really old (like just about everything I own) Art Tube Pre-amp. That's what I use to get my mic and guitar/bass into my computer. I just overdrove the pre-amp singing "live" going in.

I have Liar, but I lost the older ones because of a hard-drive failure a while back. Can you send me a link so I'll have everything again? I'd really like to hear them back to back since haven't heard them in so long.

I'll try to dig them up this week. But I meant EVERYTHING you've done. All your collabs here, etc... Gosh, I can think of a couple just off the top of head... the one you did with Erik recently.. that pink floydish thing you did awhile back and another not too long ago with the lyrics about the Sea (if i remember that correctly). It'd be fun to have a SAM COLLAB'S page somewhere to just stream all these. Like New Year's Eve... LOL.. with a very large glass of wine in hand.. of course! ;--))

Same loss. If I really tried, I could prob get most back from Box (where I usu upload) and from the forums that provide their own upload. But I'm funny in that I'll go thru the trouble of performing and mixing/contributing to collabs--and my own stuff--then hardly ever listen to it again unless by chance. It's like "the past." Not that I'm comparing myself to a genius, but I think Lennon was the same way. There must be some sort of psychological name for that. I still would like our collabs, though. I do get an urge on rare occasions to pull out "the past."

I loved this track, but imo the only things that benefited from the edgy mix are the guitar solo's. A better mix would make this song more enjoyable.

Thanks for listening Usta. Lately time hasn't been as free as earlier in the year, but I am slowly working on a remix. I'll leave the old version up for comparison, then add it to this thread whenever I finish.

Nice! I'll be looking forward to it.

edit: Don't you have a soundcloud account? or bandcamp (for finished songs).

I'm in agreement with most the opinions mentioned by others regarding mix,
just a little tweakin could bring it to a new level of enjoyability.

Still Great Stuff !!!

I'm with Mark, it would be a worthy endeavor to compile a album(or 2 or ?)

like a KTEL greatest hits album
