Before I posted here I googled a bunch to see if it was a known problem with Behringer umc204hd. Found nothing.

Though some companies delete comments of "your stuff has problems."

Not saying that company would do it, but if anyone would, it might be the company who sued someone they (allegedly) copied (Dave Smith folks) for saying "You copied me." (allegedly)

No clue, but no Behringer here and issue seems virtually identical. Checked same settings as you, and all as advised from earlier posts.

Ah. Interesting to know. Thank you.

Maybe it's a Windows issue.

Last year I had my mic stop working from an update. I a known issue, horrible, and for "security." I spent hours trying to figure out, then wrote it up:
"Mic no longer working on Windows 10 ? – Here’s the Solution. (For FeenPhone and for all apps)"

It's the other way round.

If Fast Start/Boot is enabled then a Shut Down is not a full, complete shut down but is an abbreviated form of hibernation and uses a hibernation file. In true, full hibernation when the system is being shut down a file image of the OS state as well as the application program states are written out to disc for retrieval when the machine is turned back on. When Fast Startup/Boot is enabled, the hibernation only includes the OS state, not the application program states, but these are still written out to disc for retrieval when the system is fired up again.

By contrast, Restart intentionally saves absolutely nothing regarding the OS state or the applications states. After shutting down it reloads the OS from scratch from the disc drive files that make up the OS.
If you hold shift while you click shutdown you do get a proper clean reboot that works the same as clicking restart.

Counter intuitive I know.

Thank you.

Do you have a different external audio interface, or onboard sound card?

You on Windows? Windows 10?

Both. (2) Win10 Pro Desktop PC DAW(s). One uses Saffire Pro14(s), the other uses onboard motherboard (ASUS) sound _ Realtek High Def Audio.

Yes to your question about seperate speakers attached to my sound card. 5.1 Surround sound actually.

My set ups is, the Presonus Interface with my stereo monitor speakers connected, is selected in Reaper Device preferences as my audio device. The SoundBlaster card with my surround sound speakers connected is set up as my default audio device under Windows Sound Settings. I'm on 64 bit Windows 10.

Reaper audio plays through the Presonus interface out to the stereo monitor speakers. Everything else plays through the SoundBlaster, out to the surround sound speakers.

I've never had any problems with this setup.

Hope that helps.

Thank you.

That may be a solution. I do have another set of smaller good speakers. Though I kind of like having everything though one pair (and the same interface) so I can hear what music out in the world sounds like through the same monitors, good for mixing / mastering my music. Not to copy it, but just to know what's out there, the range of this and that. And not ready to 300 bucks on another pair today.

Will consider it though.

I could at least try it with the smaller speakers for a few weeks, and if it solves everything, work toward getting duplicates.

Problem is I've taken all the advice here and will have to just use reaper for a week to make sure it's fixed or not. Will be hard to tell exactly what did it too. It's not something I can replicate each time.

If you've already tried a number of fixes, then by all means, just go with what you've done so far. Hopefully something you've already done fixes the problem.

If it does crap out on you again, then give the sound card setup a shot. If that fixes it, give some thought to a better sound card, if you're on a desktop, and some decent speakers.

The only reason I have surround sound on mine is because I built the computer 5 years or so ago for gaming. Don't game anymore, got tired of all those snot nosed little kids around the world laughing at me because I sucked so bad. Nothing more depressing than hearing some kid from Australia laughing at you saying "I own ya mate!!"

Little bastards. 😊

The speakers I have are
JBL 305PMKII 5″ 2-Way Powered Studio Monitors.

I love 'em. Not itching to upgrade.

The other speakers I have, if I want to do the isolated thing you describe, are PreSonus Eris E4.5. Not bad for the price.

I recently STARTED gaming, at 54. I love it. But I play only single-player games. It's the one place I'm not bothered by anyone. I don't even add my real friends on Steam when they try and add me. lol.

If you want a list of my fave single-player games, let me know. Though I recommend starting with Goat Simulator. They've made it better than when it came out, and it's like 15 bucks. (I got it for 10 on sale.)

Also, Superflight is amazing. My aspie-ness loves it.
Got it early release for 4 bucks.

I was a FPS guy, Call of Duty, Battlefield 4, that kind of stuff.

I've got a couple of single player games on my iPad, that's pretty much it for me these days.

cool.

For some reason they don't appeal to me, but I like that they exist.

I'm in Wyoming. We still have our real guns. lol.

Goat Simulator is a first-person head-butter. lol.

One key item to check, when using the same audio interface for both Windows and Reaper:

Go into Windows Sound settings, Playback device, Advanced, look for a checkbox to share the device. It might be called something like 'exclusive' (uncheck it), or 'multiclient' (check it).

Repeat for Recording devices.

Thank you.

'exclusive' was unchecked on both recording and playback in Windows Sound settings.
Someone suggested checking them as a fix, so I did.

I may have actually fixed the problem, can't tell until I run it a few days. Hard to replicate on demand.

I’ve tried every combination of that and the reaper settings for releasing the audio device and I still have this problem. Again, win 10, umc204hd, and latest reaper.

Interestingly enough I am often (but not always) able to watch YouTube videos while reaper is open, which is something most people with other devices can’t do.

I've never had any problems with getting audio from multiple apps. I've had Reaper, Power Director (video editor), You Tube, and Media player all open at the same time.

If another window like You Tube or whatever has focus, then my tracks in Reaper show offline, but I just have to click anywhere in Reaper and that takes care of that. I know there's a setting in Reaper somewhere to change that, but I don't see it as a problem so I down't worry about it.
