Way to Prevent Item Split When Moving Region?
I am wondering if there is a way to prevent certain media items or tracks from splitting when a Region the items are in is moved? I am using a large region to move all of my automations and markers around on one set of tracks but want a reference track to remain unimpacted. I thought I could lock the item or the track to prevent anything from happening to it, but that does not work...moving a region that partly spans that item still splits it. I can work around it by fixing the split after every region move...but sure seems there should be some way to exclude a track from getting split when moving a region that it spans.

This feature (copying regions without splitting the source items) is available in Reaper 5.76

I am running 5.76, but am looking for the ability to prevent items from splitting when I move the starting point of a Region that overlaps an item. Right now, when I move the start of the Region left or right an item that spans the point of region movement gets split and the split point moves with the region.

@Hopi
I haven't actually tested this myself (I'm away at the moment) but I saw it referenced in a recent pre-release thread and here's a screenshot from the changelog on the Reaper download page for 5.76...

Still..doesn't help this thread's problem...if the start of a region is moved then the media items that are impacted split even if locked. There seems to be no way to prevent any media item(s) from splitting when moving the starting point of the region.

yes it does

this is the action you need... where you put it in the mouse mods for regions is up to you
with it you can move the region without changing the contents of the items in the region
and that include resizing the region itself

Ok, it is close...but SHIFT-ALT and drag does not move Markers with the region...I need the markers to move with the region....which is why, in this case, I established regions to begin with. I have tons of markers and envelopes that need shifting for a complex project...and would like the recorded audio to remain untouched as the markers and envelope points for some tracks move to align to the recording content...which needs to stay as-recorded. What I can do is let the reference track split, then repair it after every region drag. I need to do about 200 drags so it will not be fun...but it is possible at least....but not with this new capability....just by dragging so the markers move along. Just seems a locked media item should be protected form splitting when this happens.

maybe you can try it a diff way
cfillion has two lua scripts [get via reapack]
one will copy makers and regions in a time selection and the other will paste what was copied to the edit cursor location

Thank you. This should allow me to get this done much more efficiently. Much appreciated!

I installed and tested and now I am not so happy again. It does not copy envelopes...and I need to move envelope points too...so back to using regions to move things and then patching media items that get split.

A Mouse Mod that moves all envelopepoints and markers and even marker end-points to the right of the cursor in all lanes but leaves the media items alone would be ideal. ..and would effectively move control type items while leaving content on-tact. This would not only help me but would help others who use reaper for film or other types of editing. The new mouse mod in 5.76 ... if it respected media item locks would come close and could suffice by leveraging region movement of a region that was built to span the desired start point to the end of the time line. Even easier would be just having ability to drag structural items to the right of the cursor as described above. Any help would be appreciated and could help many people.

Bump...
Any news on this?
I was just searching for the same thing. I got several regions I'd like to move around and having a reference/background item/track locked and immovable would be great.
Cheers

my solution would be to run the background track in a different project tab synced to your main project tab, if you need it as a guide, and then drag it to full length in your main project when you have finished your edits.

Have a look at ReaTrak it has a lot of tools for copying regions with or without tracks. In the GUI, Circle of Fifths and Chord Sheet.

Thanks for your responses, guys.
@domzy I will try this today...
@MusoBob Wow, your tool seems insanely powerful. Maybe a bit too much functionality for my simple mind.

Look under Preferences > Media > MIDI:
- uncheck - Allow trim of MIDI items when splitting (does not apply to pooled MIDI)
You'll probably need to do some clean up after you copy, but I don't think you'll lose anything.
Disclaimer: I'm new to reaper (so do test on non-critical projects)
Does this help?

That definitely helps a lot with repairing any problems with split MIDI afterwards. I can't find an action to enable/disable that setting though, that would be really handy as I only want to disable it within certain custom actions.
