Default [6.04] Crashing during plugin scan (SOLVED)

I'm trying to migrate over from Logic Pro X, so this is a fresh install of Reaper (64 bit). Reaper is crashing during startup / plugin scan. It stops trying to scan when re-opening on the 3rd time, but going into preferences and re-scanning still crashes every time. I installed 6.03, but I still have the same issue. See 2 crash reports below running Reaper 6.04.

(I broke this up into two posts since I couldn't fit both crash reports into one. Since this is my first forum post here, I don't want to sketch anyone out with text file attachments).

Thanks

Looks like two plugins crashing during scan. Everything will work normally, except that those two plugins won't be available. Sometimes crashes like this are from missing or expired plugin copy protection. If these are not plugins you use, you can just ignore it, the plugins are effectively blacklisted unless you manually re-scan.

When you say "missing or expired plugin copy protection", are you talking about cracked plugins? If so, I don't have anything like that on my computer. I still have until next December until my Slate subscription needs to be renewed, so that shouldn't be the issue. I also went into my iLok software and made sure my cloud session was opened on this computer.

Not using the Slate stuff, especially FG-Bomber, isn't really an option since it's an important part of my workflow. Am I out of luck, or is there something I can try? I keep everything up to date, so it's not a case of me using an older version of Slate plugins.

It would be a pity if I had to hang the towel with Reaper this early on.

Thanks for chiming in.

I don't see any other reports of Slate plugins failing to scan on macOS in REAPER, so it doesn't seem like a general problem with these plugins, but something specific to your setup. According to the crash report, both plugins are throwing the exception "resource temporarily unavailable." I apologize for being a cliche, but I assume you've tried rebooting to make sure there isn't some unused process holding onto whatever resource the plugins are trying to access?

No need to apologize, I appreciate you trying to help! Yeah, I've done a few reboots / shut downs and that doesn't change anything.

I think at this point I'm just going to uninstall / reinstall all the slate stuff and see if that fixes anything. I'm not sure what to do about the NI Bite plugin since everything seems to be ok with the installation of that, but maybe things will change after the Slate reinstall.

two plugins crashing. Maybe try removing them from the plugins folder (do a backup for the desktop) re-scan and put them back to the original folder and scan again. Might work.

So now I'm more confused.

I reinstalled all the Slate stuff, but I'm still getting crashes. The thing that's confusing me is that FG-Bomber and Bite now scan properly, but now Slate VMR and Reaktor 6 is where it's crashing. I checked and Reaktor is also up to date.

So.... now it doesn't seem like it's crashing because of specific plugins, but at random during the plugin scan?

Ah, that's actually a clue. It's possible the Slate plugins are not unloading all of their resources properly, so the scan process is equivalent to trying to open all of the plugins at the same time. Eventually some resource limit is reached and the next plugin fails to load.

I know it's a pain, but what I'd suggest is running the scan process until it completes. Then open the REAPER resource path (you can do this from within REAPER: Actions > Show REAPER resource path in finder), and open reaper-vstplugins64.ini in a text editor. The plugins that failed scan will have lines like this:

Code:
whatever.vst=80F57B7D4EACD501
With nothing after the hex code. Delete the failed-scan lines, save the file, and reopen REAPER. The scan process should then skip over anything that already scanned properly, and rescan only the ones that failed. If this theory is correct, you may be able to get everything properly scanned by repeating this process.

You friggin' rule. I couldn't get to the resource path folder through the actions drop down menu, but after some googling I was able to find an alternate way of getting there.

Sure enough though, when I looked in that file those two plugins didn't have the info you were talking about. Deleted them and restarted and they both scanned successfully!

Thanks again for all your help! This was really bothering me.

Great! For future reference, I didn't mean through the Actions menu, I meant through the action list which you can open from the Actions menu.
