HaHa - Fantastic! Reaktor and Massive down the drain! The VSTi is a great piece of work; an exact software copy of the real thing, all sliders etc. working as they should. And that sound! Modern nostalgia... Let's write a quartet for the Casio! Thanks for that link.

That Casio emulation was the subject of an FR last year - http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4385 - for some reason it hasn't made it to the top of Justin's to-do list yet!

whereas you certainly deserved to win the Big One in the competition you mentioned in that thread, Art

so you already knew all about it... now I imagine you playing the Casio in REAPER while waiting for an Anton Webern quartet to begin

But I wanted to posy some links to fine & famous lists of useful midi plugins written by NicFit and Soma for eXT but for the most of them working just as well in REAPER:

http://asseca.com/nicfit/
http://www.asseca.com/soma/index.html
check this one: http://www.asseca.com/soma/notefx.html

Another useful set, OK in REAPER: http://www.niallmoody.com/ndcplugs/ndcmidi.htm

Easily find the type of midi plugin you're looking for here:
http://www.midiplugins.com/

And one of those interesting midi plugs I recently found:
http://nay-seven.com/MidiFrippen.htm
Midi frippertronics!

Well Jeroen Breebaart did it again. He added the excellent Omniverb plugin to his impressive free collection:
http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/audio_vst.htm

Omniverb is a reverberation plugin with separate control of the reverberation time, echo density, room size, and early reflections. It can also be used as a gated reverb.

The incredibly low CPU usage is amazing for this kind of plug. And the sound is great.

Audio designer/engineer Jez Wells published some interesting free FX: http://www.jezwells.org/

One of them is Shapee, a sound morpher. Shapee let's you combine the sound of the two wave files, say the pitch of wave A with the formant of wave B. It creates a mono output from a seperated left (wave A) and right (wave B) stereo input.

In REAPER it's easy to set up a small track template for shapee.
Track 1: wave A (& StereoTools FX, select mute left or right)
Track 2: wave B (& StereoTools FX, select mute right or left)
Track 3 (SOLO): Shapee FX (routing: receive from track 1 and 2)

StereoTools (a useful VST on its own): http://www.kellyindustries.com/stereo_tools.html

At a quick listen this plugin seems to actually sound pretty good:

Dream Vortex Leveling Amp

http://www.dreamvortexstudio.co.uk/8103/

the reason I say "actually sound pretty good" is just that I have tried a few plugins that try to do LA2ish compression with few that are satisfying. This one SEEMS to work pretty well... what do you guys think?

-Edit- Used it some more... It can kinda get sort of pumpy faster than say the UA LA2A, but for milder settings i still like the sound.

I just tried out the (in)famous Modern Plugins by Antress for the first time. He's a guy from Taiwan, and 'Made in Taiwan' will pretty much tell you that the thing is a cheap copy of a western product... so are some of Antress GUI's. And while in some heated discussions at KVR some guys tried to make fun of these plugins by saying that their actual sound is a parody of the originals, I think these plugins are sounding pretty if not totally amazing for free stuff...

It wouldn't surprise me if it turned out that Antress actually used the coding of rather expensive stuff to create his 'own' plugins... I might be wrong, but for the moment I'd say that these plugins are among THE Must Have 'Good Free Effects' out there...

Use a good EQ to treat some high frequencies hisses that might occur...

http://antress.myweb.hinet.net/

No doubt mentioned before here, and AFAIK loathed by our good man jens, but hey! what a compressors and sounds (and no, I'm not deafened by those GUI's )

Shhhh... don't give out the secret

Yes, these Antress plugins have lots of character (the compressors, the levelers, actually there is no bad plugin in the bundle - even though they are sometimes far from the "emulated" model). For non-critical tracks they may be just the magic ingredient. And let people talk .

And wouldn't we all love a ReaComp with an Antress GUI (or better, made by White Tie)? 8).

i like'em.

i just quckly tryied Antress' plugins, i think my fav. is the Fairchild. (i've only run thru the vintage series.)

but the 1176 is not doing its job, imo. nor has a character.

The Fairchild (very good!), the VP-ME (for aggressive, dance-oriented sound), the Manley (a "one trick pony"), the analoger, and the modern plugins (these compressors sound very good!).

1176 and LA2A are much different from the hardware and their saturation is less than stellar. I like the 1176 on some tracks, even though it's not UAD or Bomb Factory at all .

Btw the Leveling Amplifier by Martin Best rox ! It's fast, quite transparent, clean and very musical. And looks great !

Dave Haupt IS famous, sink.

Something else. Brian Eno assisted Bowie in writing songs for Lodger by arbitrarily selecting chords written on some school board. The band would simply follow the schoolmaster. With some striking results, such as 'Repetition'.

Here's a nicely made plugin for song writing experiments in that same fashion:
http://www.mucoder.net/tonespace/

It's all about chords and scales.

The skilled man who did Electri-Q has released a VERY low on cpu 7bands plugin (even lower cpu than the beloved reaeq) :
noname eq :
http://www.savioursofsoul.de/Christian/VST/NonameEQ.zip

... and also IIeq, which is free, and recently had a new nice gui :

ah ah
I like that sketchy look (a lot more than the classic metal brushed)
But if you prefer more conventionnal stuff, the plugin is available with 2 gui

NoName eq is not "just another" eq : it has many filter types on the 7 bands, curve display, and never exceeds 0.7% cpu on my machine...

I'd get the updated Antress plugins pack (and the updates really make a difference) before the climate changes too drastically:

http://antress.myweb.hinet.net/

edit / FWIW even KVR's critical compressor guru bmanic is clearly very impressed:

That's funny, cuz that's exactly how I felt about them when I tried them (granted it was some time ago, I see they've been updated more than once since then).

At the time, I felt like many people were "listening with their eyes", because their sounds did not impress me at all, yet they were being raved about on numerous forums.

Regardless, I applaud anyone who works hard at providing good products at affordable prices (and what's more affordable than free?). Power to the people! One of the same reasons I was drawn to reaper...

I can't find a link for the VL1 on its homepage. Any alternative download site ?

Updated: Never mind, I found it. I wondered what that Download button was for...

And I have to ask: Are you a Willie McTell fan or do you just admire his picture ?

Now I return to listening to the Webern quartets...

Default Great Strings Plugin

This is definitely the best I've ever used for cello, violin, viola, contrabass.
Even does whole orchestra sections.
It's called DSK Strings.

CAUTION: It's CPU intensive.

There's some other good ones here too:

Default Pluggos

This is a great thread, you can spend a lifetime sifting through these freebies!

I found this one:

http://www.christiankleine.com/

Where he creates something called pluggos!

Forgive me if i'm a bit of a dunce but what are Pluggos...and how do i use them?

I really like this artist and would like to try out his plugins.

cheers
