Default Open MIDI file, play makes no sound

This is probably just some newby mistake on my part, but...

I installed Reaper, opened up a MIDI file, and when I Play it, I get no sound. I've looked for a place/way to assign an instrument or some other way to get it to play the music, but I can't find anything. So how do I get sound out of it?

Hello 41294 and welcome to these forums. You'll find many helpful people here and a lot of useful information.

You're right, you need to route the MID on the track to some sort of sound generator.

If you have some software synths installed (and Reaper can see them in its FX browser), click on the [fx] button on the track and browse to the synth you want to use.

Or you can route the MIDI out of Reaper to some other software or hardware.

I would recommend downloading the User Guide from here:

Also, these links should help too. Record and playback MIDI:
