[song] Sensommerdag
Hello!
Edit released: https://geirsolerod.bandcamp.com/track/sensommerdag
(Lyrics in Norwegian again, sorry for not presenting you something you can understand easier )
Strings: Maria Grigoryeva (Rusland)
Mix-state: Evolved ruff/ early mix
I believe I'm finished tracking, but:
- Does the vocal cut it for you?
Then, it's about mixing:
Any suggestions for creating variation? I was thinking varying levels and maybe some width of the perc. Some muting?
Anything else of suggestions and things that pops up for you?
Thanks!
Geir

Lyrics (Quick Google translate)
A late-summer-evening
1. The happiness is sun
The waves of the ocean
And the islet with three
so nice there to see
A late-summer-evening
The wind whispering tenderly
My heart has peace
And waves in line with
Stars and Sun
and this planet
So sparkling beauty this earth
A late-summer-evening
but the sun is here to stay
2. A seagull glides silent
There in the distance
Against shells of herring
It gets what it wants
While I'm sitting here
feeling the eternal power of life
A gull and herring
meet out there
But none of them
regrets its route
When the day of summer comes to the evening
A late-summer-evening
life is here to stay
mm ..
Tail:
My heart has peace
A rhythm so quiet
It dances
with stars and planets
A late-summer-evening

Maybe I would lower the strings in volume a tiny bit when vocal is
singing (or EQ strings more mellow?) or sidechaining?
....but thats my ears telling me....I am 55 ;-)

Thanks a lot!
I have some ducking eq for the strings,
but I'll do some more. Nice input, thanks!

Have had an issue with project corruption:
https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=210666
and it showed up a lot of sends was gone,
disabling reverbs and ducking. Fixing.
So string eq ducking was not doing anything..

Ok, this should be better fx/reverb-wise:

Quite some reverb on strings,
not so much on vocal, does that work well together?

Also Maria Grigoryeva did a great job of playing your score, lots of expression.
Keep it up, you might be writing for the movies some day.

Thanks a lot!
Vocal reverb: Whenever I hear the reverb compromise vocal intelligibility, I pul it down. Trying some predalay, ducking, reverb eq -getting some more in.
Or, maybe I have this weird taste for dry vocal
Yes, Maria plays very good, but getting a good string-sound still seems hard.
Soon of to mastering.
Looking forward to see what Arie Bender a fellow Reaper-user can come up with for cover. Have got some very nice photos from the costal areas here.

Mid-period Beatles meets Kaizers Orchestra, with a hint of Rolf Just Nilsen
I like it, and I was expecting to hear a lirekasse or something similar to join in with the melody. Can imagine listening to it on a trip to Brønnøya on Rigmor on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

I'm gonna try it out on my son in the car today. No offence intended, when I lived in Germany I loved the work of Rolf Zuckowski. The best melodies are the ones we learn as kids.
