Default Horizontal Zoom out not staying centered under mouse cursor

I think this issue has been there for a long while but it has driven me insane enough now to file a bug report...

As you can see from the screen capture if I zoom in, the zoom stays centered on the original point where I started the zoom (around 17.3). However, if zoom out it stays centered to a certain point and then starts moving further and further away from the original point.

The settings I use for zoom in the preferences are as follows:

Mouse Modifiers->MIDI marker/region lanes->Hand Scroll and horizontal zoom
Editing Behavior->Horizontal zoom center->Mouse Cursor

If I just zoom with the mousewheel (rather than using the region/maker lane zoom/scroll) the behavior is the same.

If this is expected behavior can we please have an option to always stay centered on mouse cursor during zoom. If it is related to the fact that the zoom must stay relative to the start of the object or track, please add an option to prevent further zoom out once the mouse cursors position needs to be moved to maintain that or continually re-center the position once it reaches that point.

Optimally, I should be able to click and hold the mouse button and continually drag up and down vertically as far as I like without the focus ever moving from the original point.

I really hope this can be sorted in the near future as this is really causing me a lot of frustration. Thanks.

Here is another image but one that shows the issue better...

Note how when I start to zoom back in the original zoom focus point is totally different to the original even although I haven't let the mouse button off at any stage in the recording.

Sorry for yet another image..

Here is how Ableton handles it. This is how I would like Reaper to behave...

Notice how once it starts to move the arrange window (at about 9 seconds), it keeps mouse focus on the original zoom point and scrolls back to it once it can get back to that point (about 10 seconds).

At no stage in the recording did I take the mouse button off.

maybe this helps

Preferences
Editing Behaviur
Vertical zoom Center : --- select choice
horizontal zoom center: -- select choice

to select this odd zoom behaviour of ableton select "center of view"
for both, i guess

i'd prefer for
vertical "Track under mouse cursor"
and horzontal "Mouse cursor"

"Why cant I make Reaper into Protools/Sonar/Cubase/Logic/etc...?"

(grin)

As a refugee from several other DAWs I can understand the tendency to want to be surrounded by nice familiar workflows even though program X is not program Y, but I have never found a DAW that I switched to which DIDNT require me to change my habits in certain areas.

And of course in the course of doing so, I actually learnt a lot about the "new" DAW.

We need a video tutorial acronym that is the equivalent of RTFM

WOOKV? (watch one of Kenny's.... you get the picture)

Thanks for the suggestion, but as I stated in my original post I already have that set for both arrange view and midi editor. It is more a problem I have with how those settings work.... The zoom does not stay centered on the original point when I drag up and down without releasing the mouse button. I view this as a bug.

I don't want Reaper to become Ableton... I actually hate Ableton and can't understand why so many EDM producers use it. Reaper is far better, but I believe the zooming behaviour from Ableton is the correct implementation of this feature (horizontal zoom center on mouse cursor).

As for RTFM, if you read the first post you'd see that I already had the correct settings configured and I have a problem with the behaviour of those settings.

And BTW I've seen every one of Kenny's video's on both the Reaper site and Groove3.

Thought I made this issue crystal clear with the info I provided and all of the screen captures... but maybe not

+1 I have noticed this as well. It interrupts workflow for sure and would be a great UI efficiency fix to take care of.

You misinterpreted what I said.
Was making a philosophical comment on the shortcomings of manuals and presentation of data and of course those blasted TLAs, not suggesting you RTFM or even WTBV* (watch the bloody video)

P.S. Where in Oz? My grandad emigrated to the UK after WW1 from Warrnambool.
