Default Recommendation for midi controller

Hi guys,

I am looking for a midi controller with multiple faders, so that I can record automation on the fly. Especially I would like to record automation for my string samples. I am only looking for faders (so no keys or knobs).

Currently I already have a presonus faderport as a control surface, so I only need something for the sole purpose of recording automation and midi learning fx parameters on the fly.

Thanks for your advice and expertise!

The only midi faderboxes I know are by a German company, Faderfox. They can be acquired via Justmusic.de and perhaps Music-Store.de .

For example the MX12 has 12 midi faders and lots of banks. Personally I'm looking at the UC-4. 8 faders, 8 endless knobs, configurable almost without end and a small form factor. These controllers come highly recommended. They are not motorized however.

The Behringer X-Touch Compact is and has two layers. Maybe decent for your needs too. Reapers midi feedback is non-existant however.

Thanks for the great suggestions :-)
They all seem quite good, although the faderfox definitely appeals to me, but the price is less friendly.

The Korg unit is fine. It's only downside is the durability. It has decent configuration software. Not sure it has more than 1 layer though.

Well actually that one seems like a perfect solution!
Or maybe even the Korg nanoKONTROL Studio

I know this is an old thread but if anyone is interested, I’m currently developing a controller with 9 faders with each 2 knobs. There's still a long way to go, but if you have any suggestions, would like some more info, let me know.

The Akai MIDIMix sells for under $99, and when used with goldenarpharazon's Reaper script it gives you 8 bankable faders, a master fader, and 24 (non continuous) knobs. Great for recording automation, and the script allows you to alternately switch it into "instrument mode" in which all 24 knobs can be mapped to FX parameters on a selected track. This mode is even easier to use if you also install the LBX Smartknobs script, which greatly speeds up the time it takes to map parameters and helps maintain consistency when changing FX.

Hi koens,

I did laugh a little bit when I read your reply, but if you had said you're designing a controller that goes to eleven..I'd buy

No disrespect 😎 I'm interested in what everyone has to say and also looking for a dedicated controller other than my iPad.

Add a "desuckify" fader and I'll be the first on your Kickstarter!

Seriously tho, interested to see what you put together.

I'm glad I brought some sunshine into your day

Haha, yeah well the number actually came about from the classical 8 track mixers, plus an additive master channel so it's 8 + 1 = 9. But cool! That's one vote for adding 2 extra tracks

Should the desuckify-fader be fixed at always full on? :P

Here's a rendering of what I have now. Each channel also has a RGB LED that can be set to the color of the track (sorry for the horrible quality but I was only allowed to upload an 800x600 image with max 64KB)

I hear ya on 800x600 64KB...drives me nuts, especially when I've been searching for the best way to link screenshots and pics but fail with flying colors. The Reaper forum wizards here that imbed super awesome pics have proven that there is a way.

Btw...cool Pic you attached!

I often remote into my studio pc from my iPad, take a screenshot at it's screen resolution (I've attached a link below, I don't know offhand).

I attempt to resize what I need fr that image to 800x600 64KB. It always looks horrible, blurry and a total waste of time. This is not the end of the world, it's something I've been working on in my spare time.

The screenshot is still too big. Or am I missing some hidden functionality?
