Default Youtube videos won't play while reaper open after upgrade

After upgrading to the latest, youtube videos won't play while reaper is open due to it, I guess, locking the sound card or something.

Didn't have this problem before I upgraded to 5.33 and works fine when I shut down reaper. It may be nothing but is weird(youtube just spins, tried in firefox and opera).

(might have been created from doing that full install/portable install "technique" I opened a FR for)

Second. I use an Onyx Blackbird which works fine as a general windows sound device until Reaper's opened, then Windows can't play out the ASIO interface.

...the workaround was to wire the pc audio output to the Blackbird as a stereo input using rca to 1/4" cables, but that takes two channels from my interface just to give Windows a way to play sounds again. Kludgy, but it works.

Well, I once had a problem where reaper would take exclusive control of the asio device. That seemed to be fixed and I was then able to use any software to play any audio at any time along side reaper. That still works and I'm not sure if that was a reaper problem or a driver problem or what.

Now I noticed that I cannot play youtube videos while while reaper is running... I do not know when that happened(I think I could before but not 100%).

What happens is that if the youtube video is playing and I start reaper it continues to work. but if I stop the video and start it, it just spins and never does anything.

I'm pretty sure this wasn't a problem before I just upgraded to 5.33. note that this only happens when I start the video for the first time. A pause does not cause the problem. If I start reaper first, try to play the video, then close reaper, the video still never starts.

It is a specific issue with reaper, audio hardware, and youtube. Maybe youtube changed some things. It is obviously that it is a audio issue though. (hardware access I guess)

There is a setting in Reaper's preferences to allow it to release the ASIO driver when Reaper loses focus but maybe you already have that set. Also check your buffer settings, I have an issue where if my soundcard buffer is set to something really low like 48 samples, YT videos won't play audio. Actually, they sort of play in very slow motion without audio.

No, I don't have to enable that and everything seems to work. I need it disabled so I can use reaper in the background as a "monitor" while playing other audio on top. It works great(happy that it works cause it didn't at one point and I couldn't use things like BBIAB + reaper but now I can.

I do not think it is the sample rate nor the latency because, like I said, it works fine when I play the YT video first and then open reaper.

I'll investigate more and see if any other programs cause the same problem. If they do, then it's YT or possibly firefox's problem. It's not a huge as I don't tend to use them simultaneously much but does suck when I do need to.

It is very likely related to the sampling rate. Probably you are working on a project that uses sampling rate X while YouTube tries to force sampling rate Y and if it can't, it won't play (actually this rate is probably set by the Wdm driver's settings). It can not override the asio driver's setting when the device is working in the asio mode. However reaper can adapt to the enforced rate if the preferred rate is unavailable. Hence if you start YouTube before reaper, you can use both, but reaper will work with a sampling rate that YouTube enforced.
