Default Reaper Crash - Portable Install with Asio device not present on both machines

I had a portable install of reaper (v5.973 x64 on Windows 10 for both machines) that I ran on a machine with an RME Babyface using the ASIO drivers. The REAPER.ini on the portable install had

[audioconfig]
mode=3
...
asio_driver=0
asio_driver_name="ASIO Fireface USB"
asio_input0=0
asio_input1=1
asio_output0=2
asio_output1=3
asio_srate=48000
asio_srate_use=0
asio_zeromode=1
asio_resetignore=1
asio_threadprio=0
asio_bsize=512
asio_bsize_use=0

The asio_* values below it were clearly configured for the machine with the RME device. When I tried to run reaper on a machine without it, it crashed.

I found that either setting mode=3 to mode=5 (Wasapi?) or deleting the records starting with asio_ allowed reaper to start successfully finding.

It looks like, in asio mode, it trusts the asio settings and tries to load the driver failing when it's not present.
