EndItAll alternative - free
I've just come across "SmartClose" - http://i.domaindlx.com/bmproductions...ns/smartclose/ - which unlike the official version of EndItAll is actually free, and unlike EndItAll on my laptop at least, works. It can work via a wizard to make it easy to use, and also has the ability to re-run apps that it has killed. Here at least it seemed to do the job of stopping all programs and processes effectively, prior to running Reaper, which is something I'm having to do on the laptop due to something unidentified freezing it briefly every so often.
As with any such program though, you do have to be careful about stopping antivirus and firewall programs - maybe physically disconnect from the net first.

have you tried this on a machine without a mysteriously bad thing?
did you notice a performance boost on that machine?
looks interesting.
cheers

Wow, very nice. I'm already running a dual boot with nothing extra in memory, no AV, no FW, very minimal services... I'll see if this helps even more. Though this is lightning fast already.

Thanks for the Link Art...
...I have an occasional use for just such a tool, and have used EndItAll in the past.

In normal use I wouldn't expect that closing all other apps would make a huge difference - unless you normally render a video while working with Reaper at the same time! - but it's more a matter of other apps suddenly wanting to interrupt Reaper or access the drive or whatever, which could cause a momentary glitch, depending on all the circumstances.

Meanwhile even with a lot of stuff shut down, my laptop did the same 15 second freeze trick mid-concert last night. Audio stops, clock stops, display stops, mouse stops (I think) - then it carries on as before. I've just updated the BIOS - maybe that will fix it. It's really weird. Not temperature related, CPU load related, drive load related - just sheer bloody-mindedness I guess!
