Default Second track on Reaper

I've finally finished my second track using Reaper and here it is:-

https://soundcloud.com/drged1955/waves-and-clouds

It's meant to be a chilled/relaxing/reflective track. The idea behind it is that you are alone on a beach and stood at the water's edge. As you look out to sea all you can see are the waves and clouds.

Nice song.
BUT. The solo in the end is performed with no feeling.

Hi, msundh!

Thanks for your your comment. I'm glad you like the track and I think I know what you mean about the solo at the end being performed with no feeling. It's one of my failings that I start tracks off with a lot more care and attention to detail than I finish with them with! I think it stems from the fact that a track usually takes me quite a while to do and by the end I am running out of patience and in a hurry to get it finished. That's the answer... ...more patience!

Many thanks,

DrGed

Cool vibe, as commented before, the end solo is a bit weak, but it's nothing that can't just be layered up in reverbs and delays to make it interesting.

Also enjoying the first track.

Thank you, Wyleegee, foe listening to my track.

I'm glad you like it and I take on board your comment about the second solo. As I said in my earlier comment, I'm better at starting a track than finishing it and that's something I need to work on.

Thanks for listening to my first track as well.

Cheers,

DrGed

What works for me is throwing a lot of ideas down in a short space of time, then finessing them over time.

That sounds like a good way of doing things.

I'll try it!

Really good for a second track!

The keys have a very harsh resonance to them, which was extra loud when they came in, compared to the intro.

I like the atmosphere, but the mix is a bit hard on the ears due to the concentration of frequecies in the upper mids.

Do you use SPAN? It can point out imbalances in the mix visually if your monitoring is not great (among other things).

Hi foxAsteria,

Thanks for your helpful comments. I've never heard of SPAN, let alone used it. I have, however, just "googled" it and can see how it would be useful.

I'm forming the opinion that the tracks I've recorded so far are somewhat rough round the edges and that I'll need to revisited them at some stage.

I'm grateful for the advice I've received so far.

Many Thanks,

DrGed

Man, I hate argument from feeling. If I had to comment then yeah, I'd comment the solo, but mainly because it kinda doesn't fit the airy quality of the rest of the piece, sticks out as too close and dry. Rest is cool, I like airy 90s pads like those.

Hi Zeekat,

Thanks for your comments. Yes, there is a consensus forming around the solo but, as I type this, I'm thinking which bit, exactly, do people mean? Is it the part played on the electric piano just before the key change or the one afterwards played on the oboe? I'd assumed it was the oboe that sounded rather dull but I'm not sure now.

Thanks,

Ged

Yeah, the oboe one. I knew it was some kind of a wind instrument, just wasn't sure which one
