Default Color map not applied to MIDI editor

Everytime I set a new color map in the prefs, the MIDI editor does not change it unless I load it in the MIDI editor -> File -> Note colors -> Load color map from file. I have to do this for every single item in a project.

I really hope I'm missing something. Is there a more elegant way to set a new color map for a project?

I have a color map that is part of the png files in my theme... and then some others in the Data folder....

So that might be what you are seeing... the one in the theme showing up unless you either change it or load one to the ME and save the project with that one.

And there's no way to reset it in one go? :O

don't know of one other than open the theme and put in your own map and re-compress to the .reaperthemezip file....

me? with all the changes in the +dev's lately, in the cc and velo lanes I've been keeping a few maps handy to see what works best...

it seems nothing is perfect so far but the DEV's keep changing the game with those points and how they color... so I cautious about settling in on anything just yet...

I keep finding one map works good for colors by pitch but not good for colors by something else...
I too, wish there was another way

Yeah, same here man! Haven't found anything that makes me happy in all areas.

EDIT: wait, actually I think you missunderstood.
Changing the overall color map in one go is no problem.
But apparently, EVERY item has set an individual color map.
I have no idea why...

Here in the GIF, I'm resetting 2 items to the default theme color map.
I have to do this for every item in the project (sorry for the scrolling around).
What you can see after the reset is the default color map of the theme (iLogic 1.9).

Stevie... a little hard to tell exactly what is going on from the gif... I can't tell what you have set down at the bottom of the ME where we choose to color by xxxxxx like pitch, or channel or velocity... etc.

have you looked at the White Tie guide to making the color map png?

do you use photoshop by chance?

Sorry, this is all a bit convoluted, I confess.

I have set it to velocity. But it's not about the color at all.

It's about the fact, that I cannot set the color map in the prefs
and it will override/set it for ALL items. That's what I'm not understanding.

Yes, could someone smarter than me explain how the "Default note color map" preference in Editing Behavior/MIDI Editor actually works?

If I set a default note color map does it only apply to new midi items? Because that doesn't really make sense if you have your prefs set to one midi editor per project. If there is only one midi editor, and I change the default note color map then it should change ALL items to that color map.

If the prefs were set to one MIDI Editor per media item, I could understand this behavior and that the default note color map would only apply to newly created items.

But as it is now, the behavior is pretty non-intuitive. At the very least there should be a button next to default note color map that says "Apply to all items". Otherwise, you can have a project that uses a bunch of different color maps with no way of resetting the individual items other than going into the midi editor for EACH item and select clear color map/load color map. That sort of defeats the purpose of having a global pref, especially with the prefs set to one midi editor per project.

OK and OK... and... I hear ya... and:

Stevie... would you test this:

Unpack your theme file so you get into the folder of pngs
in there find the midi color map png...

swap it for whatever one you'd like to use

then recompress that folder of pngs and related theme file
to "whatever you want to call it.ReaperThemeZip"

and see if using that theme included the color map you put in it as the default for everything....

So, let me get this straight. The only way to apply a default color map to all items is to unpack the theme, replace the color map and repack the theme??

Seems a bit on the user unfriendly side, no? As opposed to it applying when you change the default map or just an apply to all button?

Setting it in the prefs should apply it to any new item on a new track.

I don’t think there’s a way to automatically apply it to already-created items or tracks.

It is one of those 'reaperish' things... but if you consider it more, it IS kind of kewl...

I mean in that you can have a diff color map for diff items... that is sort of amazing...

Now adding you own custom map to a theme is just not that hard...
you unpack the theme, go into the folder of pngs, find the color map and change the file name to xxxxxx.png.OFF and then copy in your own custom one and make sure the file name is what the original one was. Then recompress the png folder and the theme to the xxxx.ReaperThemeZip file.

takes under 5 minutes... and still leaves you the original map in there if you want to someday turn it back on...

OT but related question: When modifying the contents of an unpacked theme, why is there a need to recompress the folder?

The image resource path for my customized theme has long pointed to an unpacked folder, and it seems to work fine. Are there any disadvantages to this that I'm not aware of?

you don't have to but it keeps things a lot neater in the long run...

Thanks, man. If it's only File Explorer organization or something and doesn't affect performance, I'm fine with leaving it unpacked.
