Waveform disappears after punch out
I did a search for this and came up with nothing, but my search-fu may not be working today...
When doing a live recording, I've noticed that when I punch in a spot mic, I see a waveform on that track, as expected, but when I punch out, the waveform disappears, replaced by a box, until I stop recording, when the waveforms reappear. The audio is there, but it is a little disconcerting! Is this normal and/or is there a setting somewhere that can change this behaviour?

How are you punching in and out, what recording mode do you use?

Just a guess, but it could have something to do with your peaks display settings.

Are you looping and that it has multiple takes? If so, hit shift+T for previous take and see if it appears.

Oops... looks like I didn't have automatic e-mail notification on so hadn't checked in for a while.
Nope. No looping. Live recording. In the latest case, one stereo track as a main pair over the ensemble, and one spot mic for announcements, at which point I just hit "record" on that track for the duration of the blurb and punch out when the blurb is over. Main pair recording throughout until the interval.
Bigearz: I'll check the peak display settings the next time I fire up the system. Didn't think of that as I assumed that showing waveforms would be the default. (However, Reaper being designed mostly for pop music, some of the things I take for granted for classical/straight acoustic aren't quite so!)

This is expected behavior — you could probably make a FR for “peaks in items which have been punched out but not yet added to project”, but in general i think you might want to just live with it.

Thanks, Justin. I certainly wouldn't describe it as "expected", but "whatever."
I used to use a SADiE DAW many years ago, which was superb for my purposes - mostly classical music recording - so naturally I wonder, "why don't they do it the same way?". Still, Reaper is pretty good overall, and for the price, a no-brainer.

Well, not really expected by me either
Isn't that part of what I described/requested a while ago? I'd love to see some progress with this:

essentially, when I trigger the action to start a new file to record into while recording, this is kind of punching out of the previous file and instantly punching into a new one. So I do think that the issues are related.

I'm using White Tie's Imperial theme ( http://www.houseofwhitetie.com/reape..._imperial.html). Animated gifs are created with LICEcap ( https://www.cockos.com/licecap/).
